Comment on “Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states from the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment of a neutral particle with axial fields”

Abstract

We analyze recently published results about the Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states from the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment of a neutral particle with axial fields. We show that the eigenvalues obtained by the authors from an arbitrary truncation of the Frobenius power series correspond to more than one model and, consequently, are unsuitable for drawing any sound physical conclusion. In addition, the prediction of allowed oscillator frequencies is a mere consequence of the truncation condition just mentioned.

Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states from the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment of a neutral particle with axial fields

S. L. R. Vieira, K. Bakke

The behavior of a neutral particle with magnetic quadrupole moment that interacts with axial magnetic and electric fields is analyzed. From the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment with the axial magnetic field, a spectrum of energy analogous to a Coulomb potential in two dimensions is obtained. Furthermore, the presence of an axial electric field is also considered. From the interaction of the magnetic quadrupole moment with this electric field, an analog of the Aharonov-Bohm effect is obtained. Finally, the Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states is analyzed when this neutral particle system is subject to the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator.

Comment on: “Quantum aspects of a moving magnetic quadrupole moment interacting with an electric field” [J. Math. Phys. 56, 062107 (2015)]

Francisco Marcelo Fernández

We analyze the results obtained for the quantum dynamics of a moving particle with a magnetic quadrupole moment interacting with electric and magnetic fields. We argue that there are no bound states contrary to what the authors state. It is shown that the proposed method is unsuitable for obtaining all the bound states and that the existence of allowed oscillator frequencies is an artifact of the approach.

Topological quantum phase and multipole moment of neutral particles

Chia-Chu Chen

It is shown that the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect is a generic feature of any multipole moment moving in an electromagnetic field. Explicit examples of electric and magnetic quadrupole moments are discussed. A way to detect the AB phase of a magnetic quadrupole moment is also provided.

Comment on "Condition for nonexistence of Aharonov-Bohm effect"

U. Klein

A recent attempt to deny the crucial role of inaccessible fields in experiments performed to test the predictions of Aharonov and Bohm is critically discussed. It is shown that these experiments may well be considered to show the reality of the Aharonov-Bohm effect even if it is correct to say that the results are completely determined by the accessible field.

Comment on “Quantum Phase of Induced Dipoles Moving in a Magnetic Field”

C. R. Hägen

It has recently been suggested that an Aharonov-Bohm phase should be capable of detection using beams of neutral polarizable particles. A more careful analysis of the proposed experiment suffices to show, however, that it cannot be performed regardless of the strength of the external electric and magnetic fields.

We respond to the points raised in the preceding Comment [] on our recent work [], which introduced a theoretical framework for the scalar electric Aharonov-Bohm effect. In this Reply, we take the opportunity to address specific criticisms, by referring to foundational aspects of gauge invariance and time-dependent quantum systems. We explain why the gauging procedure used in the Comment leads to inconsistencies and show that, when applied similarly to the well-established magnetic Aharonov-Bohm effect, it would yield demonstrably incorrect conclusions. Moreover, we highlight the consistency of our results with canonical treatments of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and we reaffirm the physicality of energy shifts in field-free regions, an effect observed in the magnetic and predicted in the electric Aharonov-Bohm contexts. We believe that this response contributes to a deeper understanding of the subtleties involved in gauge theory and quantum phase phenomena.
