Abstract

Abstract Collective spin operators for symmetric multi-quDit (namely identical D -level atom) systems generate a U( D ) symmetry. We explore generalizations to arbitrary D of SU(2)-spin coherent states and their adaptation to parity (multi-component Schrödinger cats), together with multi-mode extensions of NOON states. We write level, one- and two-quDit reduced density matrices of symmetric N -quDit states, expressed in the last two cases in terms of collective U( D )-spin operator expectation values. Then, we evaluate level and particle entanglement for symmetric multi-quDit states with linear and von Neumann entropies of the corresponding reduced density matrices. In particular, we analyze the numerical and variational ground state of Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models of 3-level identical atoms. We also propose an extension of the concept of SU(2)-spin squeezing to SU( D ) and relate it to pairwise D -level atom entanglement. Squeezing parameters and entanglement entropies are good markers that characterize the different quantum phases, and their corresponding critical points, that take place in these interacting D -level atom models.

Information diagrams in the study of entanglement in symmetric multi-quDit systems and applications to quantum phase transitions in Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick D-level atom models

Abstract In this paper we pursue the use of information measures (in particular, information diagrams) for the study of entanglement in symmetric multi-quDit systems. We use generalizations to $${U}(D)$$ U ( D ) of spin $${U}(2)$$ U ( 2 ) coherent states and their adaptation to parity (multicomponent Schrödinger cats), and we analyse one- and two-quDit reduced density matrices. We use these correlation measures to characterize quantum phase transitions occurring in Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models of $$D=3$$ D = 3 -level identical atoms, and we propose the rank of the corresponding reduced density matrix as a discrete order parameter.

Entanglement and quantum phase diagrams of symmetric multi-qubit systems

Manuel Calixto, Octavio Castaños, E. Romera

Abstract For general symmetric multi-qubit systems, the behavior of one- and two-qubit entanglement for Dicke, spin coherent and parity-adapted (even and odd) spin coherent states is determined. These quantum correlations are quantified by linear and von Neumann entropies of the corresponding one- and two-qubit reduced density matrices of the multi-qubit system. These states play a fundamental role in the study of Hamiltonian systems written in terms of collective generators of the angular momentum algebra like, for example, the Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick (LMG) model. Here we shall use these entanglement measures as a signature to characterize the different quantum phases that appear in these models.

Study of entanglement in symmetric multi-quDits systems through information diagrams

Julio Guerrero, Antonio Sojo, Alberto Mayorgas +1 more

Along this paper, we analyze the entanglement properties of symmetric multi-quDits systems in a special type of states created from the generalization to U(D) of the usual spin coherent states. By means of parity operators, we define what we call multicomponent Schrödinger cat states as parity adapted coherent states. Introducing the tool of information diagrams, i.e. representations of pairs of entropy measures, we analyze the correlation structure of this type of states and their M-wise reduced density matrices.

Phase space analysis of the 3-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model using parity adapted U(D)-spin coherent states

Alberto Mayorgas, Julio Guerrero, Manuel Calixto

Abstract We study the phase-space properties of the 3-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick as paradigmatic case of critical, parity symmetric, N-quDit systems undergoing a quantum phase transition in the thermodynamic limit N → ∞. We generalize U(2) spin coherent states to U(D) (quDits), and define the coherent state representation Qψ (Husimi function) of a symmetric N- quDit state |ψ〉 in the phase space ℂP D −1 = U(D)/[U(1) × U(D − 1)]. This allows us to define parity adapted U(D) coherent states (𝕔-DCATs), which reproduce accurately the lowest energy Hamiltonian eigenstates obtained by numerical diagonalization. We visualize precursors of the QPTs by plotting localization measures (Husimi function and its moments) of the parity adapted U(D) coherent states and the numerical Hamiltonian eigenstates for a finite number of particles.

Schmidt decomposition of parity adapted coherent states for symmetric multi-quDits

Julio Guerrero, Antonio Sojo, Alberto Mayorgas +1 more

Abstract In this paper we study the entanglement in symmetric N-quDit systems. In particular we use generalizations to U(D) of spin U(2) coherent states (CSs) and their projections on definite parity c ∈ Z 2 D − 1 (multicomponent Schrödinger cat) states and we analyse their reduced density matrices when tracing out M < N quDits. The eigenvalues (or Schmidt coefficients) of these reduced density matrices are completely characterized, allowing to prove a theorem for the decomposition of a N-quDit Schrödinger cat state with a given parity c into a sum over all possible parities of tensor products of Schrödinger cat states of N − M and M particles. Diverse asymptotic properties of the Schmidt eigenvalues are studied and, in particular, for the (rescaled) double thermodynamic limit ( N , M → ∞ , M / N fixed), we reproduce and generalize to quDits known results for photon loss of parity adapted CSs of the harmonic oscillator, thus providing an unified Schmidt decomposition for both multi-quDits and (multi-mode) photons. These results allow to determine the entanglement properties of these states and also their decoherence properties under quDit loss, where we demonstrate the robustness of these states.

Three-Axis Spin Squeezed States Associated with Excited-State Quantum Phase Transitions

Chon-Fai Kam

Spin squeezing in collective atomic ensembles enables quantum-enhanced metrology by reducing noise below the standard quantum limit through nonlinear interactions. Extending the one-axis and two-axis twisting paradigms of Kitagawa and Ueda, we introduce a general class of three-axis spin squeezed states within the anisotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. The model features direction-dependent quadratic couplings that interpolate between uniaxial and biaxial regimes and can be interpreted as an asymmetric quantum rotor. Using semiclassical dynamics, Majorana representations, and Husimi-Q distributions, we analyze the structure and metrological properties of the resulting states. The three-axis framework reproduces the known N^(-2/3) scaling of one-axis twisting and the Heisenberg-limited N^(-1) scaling of two-axis twisting, while allowing additional tunability and enhanced entanglement generation in low-spin systems. We further show that tuning the anisotropy parameters induces ground-state and excited-state quantum phase transitions, including a second-order transition associated with level clustering and critical dynamics. These results unify spin squeezing, quantum criticality, and rotor analogies, and suggest implementations in Rydberg arrays and cavity-QED platforms for precision sensing and quantum simulation.
