Abstract

Abstract Narrowband single photons that couple well to atomic ensembles could prove essential for future quantum networks, but the efficient generation of such photons remains an outstanding challenge. We realize a spatially-multiplexed heralded source of single photons that are inherently compatible with the commonly employed D2 line of rubidium. Our source is based on four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor, requiring no laser cooling or optical cavities, and generates single photons with high rate and low noise. We use Hong–Ou–Mandel interference to verify the indistinguishability of the photons generated in two different (multiplexed) channels. We further demonstrate a five-fold tunability of the photons’ temporal width. The experimental results are well reproduced by a theoretical model.

Bright, low-noise source of single photons at 780 nm with improved phase-matching in rubidium vapor

Omri Davidson, Yogev, Ohad, Eilon Poem +1 more

Future optical quantum networks could benefit from single photons that couple well to atoms, for realizing, e.g., quantum memories and deterministic photonic gates. However, the efficient generation of such photons remains a difficult challenge. Recently, we demonstrated a bright multiplexed source of indistinguishable single photons with tunable GHz-bandwidth based on four-wave-mixing in rubidium vapor [Davidson et al. 2021 New J. Phys. 23 073050]. Here we report on an improved implementation of this photon source. The new implementation employs a frequency-detuning regime that is better phase matched, a spatial-alignment procedure using single-mode fibers, a different rubidium isotope, and higher vapor-cell transmission. Characterization of the source is performed using superconducting-nanowire detectors with higher detection efficiency and lower jitter. Our source produces single photons with detected heralding efficiency of over 20%, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of 88%, generation rate of over 100 kilo-counts per second, and signal-to-noise ratio greater than 100, making it suitable for quantum information processing with photons.

Active temporal multiplexing of indistinguishable heralded single photons

Chi Xiong, X. Zhang, Zhenyu Liu +8 more

It is a fundamental challenge in quantum optics to deterministically generate indistinguishable single photons through non-deterministic nonlinear optical processes, due to the intrinsic coupling of single- and multi-photon-generation probabilities in these processes. Actively multiplexing photons generated in many temporal modes can decouple these probabilities, but key issues are to minimize resource requirements to allow scalability, and to ensure indistinguishability of the generated photons. Here we demonstrate the multiplexing of photons from four temporal modes solely using fibre-integrated optics and off-the-shelf electronic components. We show a 100% enhancement to the single-photon output probability without introducing additional multi-photon noise. Photon indistinguishability is confirmed by a fourfold Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference with a 91 ± 16% visibility after subtracting multi-photon noise due to high pump power. Our demonstration paves the way for scalable multiplexing of many non-deterministic photon sources to a single near-deterministic source, which will be of benefit to future quantum photonic technologies.

A High-Brightness Source of Narrowband, Identical-Photon Pairs

James K. Thompson, Jonathan Simon, Huanqian Loh +1 more

We generated narrowband pairs of nearly identical photons at a rate of 5 x 10(4) pairs per second from a laser-cooled atomic ensemble inside an optical cavity. A two-photon interference experiment demonstrated that the photons could be made 90% indistinguishable, a key requirement for quantum information-processing protocols. Used as a conditional single-photon source, the system operated near the fundamental limits on recovery efficiency (57%), Fourier transform-limited bandwidth, and pair-generation-rate-limited suppression of two-photon events (factor of 33 below the Poisson limit). Each photon had a spectral width of 1.1 megahertz, ideal for interacting with atomic ensembles that form the basis of proposed quantum memories and logic.

Experimental generation of single photons via active multiplexing

Xiao‐Song Ma, Stefan Zotter, Johannes Kofler +2 more

An on-demand single-photon source is a fundamental building block in quantum science and technology. We experimentally demonstrate the proof of concept for a scheme to generate on-demand single photons via actively multiplexing several heralded photons probabilistically produced from pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversions (SPDCs). By utilizing a four-photon-pair source, an active feed-forward technique, and an ultrafast single-photon router, we show a fourfold enhancement of the output photon rate. Simultaneously, we maintain the quality of the output single-photon states, confirmed by correlation measurements. We also experimentally verify, via Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, that the router does not affect the indistinguishability of the single photons. Furthermore, we give numerical simulations, which indicate that photons based on multiplexing of four SPDC sources can outperform the heralding based on highly advanced photon-number-resolving detectors. Our results show a route for on-demand single-photon generation and the practical realization of scalable linear optical quantum-information processing.

Indistinguishable heralded single photon generation via relative temporal multiplexing of two sources

X. Zhang, Y. H. Lee, Bryn A. Bell +4 more

Generating N single photons simultaneously is a formidable challenge due to the lack of deterministic single photon sources. Recent work [New J. Phys. 19, 063013 (2017] has proposed a relative multiplexing scheme that can enhance the N single photons probability with a minimum of active switching resources. We experimentally demonstrate relative temporal multiplexing on two photon sources with a 90% additional enhancement over the standard temporal multiplexing scheme demonstrated previously. 88 ± 11% visibility of Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference verifies the indistinguishability of the heralded single photons after the synchronization. This proof-of-principle demonstration points out the potential significance of the relative multiplexing scheme for large-scale photonic quantum information processing.

High-rate sub-GHz linewidth bichromatic entanglement source for quantum networking

Alexander N. Craddock, Yang Wang, Felipe Giraldo +3 more

The generation of entangled photon pairs which are compatible with quantum devices and standard telecommunication channels are critical for the development of long range fiber quantum networks. Aside from wavelength, bandwidth matching and high fidelity of produced pairs are necessary for high interfacing efficiency. High-rate, robust entanglement sources that satisfy all these conditions remain an outstanding experimental challenge. In this work, we study an entanglement source based on four-wave mixing in a diamond configuration in a warm rubidium vapor. We theoretically and experimentally investigate a new operating regime and demonstrate an entanglement source which produces highly non-degenerate $795$ and $1324$-nm photon pairs. With this source we are able to achieve in-fiber entangled pair generation rates greater than $10^7\, /s$, orders of magnitude higher than previously reported atomic sources. Additionally, given our source's native compatibility with telecom infrastructure and atomic systems, it is an important step towards scalable quantum networks.
