Abstract

We propose a quantum metrological protocol based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a squeezed vacuum input state and an antisqueezing operation at one of its output channels. A simple and intuitive geometrical picture of the state evolution is provided by the marginal Wigner functions of the state at each interferometer output channel. The protocol allows us to detect the values of the sum $\ensuremath{\beta}=\frac{1}{2}({\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}+{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{2})+{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{in}}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{out}}$, of the relative phase ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{in}}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{out}}$ between the two squeezers, and of the average of the phase delays ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{2}$ in the two arms of the interferometer. The detection sensitivity scales at the Heisenberg limit and, remarkably, is robust not only to detector inefficiencies but also to any photon losses occurring before the antisqueezing operation. Interestingly, we demonstrate that in the latter case an increase of sensitivity can even occur by increasing the losses in a suitable range.

Phase space Heisenberg-limited estimation of the average phase shift in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer

Dario Gatto, Paolo Facchi A, Vincenzo Tamma

We address the problem of distributed quantum metrology with a single squeezed-vacuum source by using the formalism of quantum mechanics in phase space. In particular, we demonstrate Heisenberg-limited sensitivity in the measurement of the average of two arbitrary phase shifts in the arms of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We obtain exact results for the measurement probability at the interferometer output for any value of the phases, which give us insight into the emergence of Heisenberg-limited sensitivity for periodical values of the phases.

Toward Heisenberg-Limited Interferometry with Dual Squeezers

Yi Gu, Song-Ping Wang, Wei Zhong

The canonical Mach-Zehnder interferometer fed with a coherent state and a squeezed-vacuum state of equal intensities is theoretically predicted to achieve Heisenberg scaling in phase sensitivity. However, this ultimate performance is unattainable using direct photon-number-difference detection due to a divergence arising precisely at the optimal equal-intensity regime. In this work, we introduce a dual-squeezing approach that overcomes this fundamental limitation. Our scheme employs an additional single-mode squeezer before detection, forming a paired configuration with the input squeezer used to generate the squeezed-vacuum state. We analytically demonstrate that the resulting dual-squeezing Mach-Zehnder interferometer enables Heisenberg-limited phase sensitivity with di rect photon-number-difference detection, while remaining robust against detection noise. Our work provides a feasible and robust route toward quantum-limited interferometric phase measurements

Phase sensitivity via photon-subtraction operations inside Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Zhou, Qisi, Kang, Qinqian, Jiang, Tao +4 more

Based on the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we propose a metrological scheme to improve phase sensitivity. In this scheme, we use a coherent state and a squeezed vacuum state as input states, employ multi-photon-subtraction operations and make intensity-detection or homodyne-detection. We study phase sensitivity, quantum Fisher information and quantum Cramér-Rao bound under both ideal and lossy conditions. The results indicate that choosing an appropriate detection method and photon subtraction scheme can significantly enhance the phase sensitivity and robustness against photon losses. Even under lossy conditions, the multi-photon subtraction schemes can surpass the standard quantum limit. Notably, the homodyne detection method can even break through the Heisenberg limit. Moreover, increasing the number of photon-subtracted can enhance both phase sensitivity and quantum Fisher information. This research highlights the significant value of this scheme in quantum precision measurement.

Mach-Zehnder Interferometry at the Heisenberg Limit with Coherent and Squeezed-Vacuum Light

Luca Pezzè, Augusto Smerzi

We show that the phase sensitivity $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\theta}$ of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer illuminated by a coherent state in one input port and a squeezed-vacuum state in the other port is (i) independent of the true value of the phase shift and (ii) can reach the Heisenberg limit $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\sim}1/{N}_{T}$, where ${N}_{T}$ is the average number of input particles. We also demonstrate that the Cramer-Rao lower bound of phase sensitivity, $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\sim}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1/\sqrt{|\ensuremath{\alpha}{|}^{2}{e}^{2r}+{sinh}^{2}r}$, can be saturated for arbitrary values of the squeezing parameter $r$ and the amplitude of the coherent mode $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ by using a Bayesian phase inference protocol.

Phase Sensitivity of Lossy Mach–Zehnder Interferometer via Photon Addition Operation

Qisi Zhou, Qingqian Kang, Teng Zhao +3 more

ABSTRACT Photon addition operations applied to squeezed states have been shown to significantly enhance phase sensitivity. In this work, we extend this approach by applying photon addition not only to coherent states but also within a Mach–Zehnder interferometer, using coherent and squeezed vacuum states as input. Both intensity‐difference and homodyne detection are used to evaluate photon addition schemes, and their phase sensitivities are compared under ideal and lossy conditions. We also analyze the quantum Fisher information of these two schemes. Results show that both schemes improve phase sensitivity, quantum Fisher information, and robustness against losses. In particular, photon addition within the interferometer performs better. Homodyne detection outperforms intensity difference detection under photon losses. Notably, the two schemes exhibit distinct parameter dependencies, rendering them suitable for different operational scenarios. When the squeezing parameter is small, photon addition employed at the coherent input with intensity difference detection can approach the Heisenberg limit in ideal conditions and can exceed the standard quantum limit in high‐loss conditions. The proposed scheme represents a valuable method for quantum precision measurements. PACS : 03.67.‐a, 05.30.‐d, 42.50,Dv, 03.65.Wj

Enhancing the phase sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer beyond the Heisenberg limit through dynamic squeezing

Lakshya Bhardwaj, Ankit Tiwari, Mohan Sarovar +1 more

We propose a method to enhance the phase sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, independent of its input states. This is achieved by applying squeezing sequences to one arm of the interferometer. By alternating between squeezing along orthogonal quadratures, we demonstrate that the phase sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer can be generically enhanced. Since this enhancement is independent of the input states, the proposed dynamic squeezing method allows for further improvement in phase sensitivity when combined with non-classical input states. We compare the dynamic squeezing approach with existing quantum sensing protocols and show that super-Heisenberg scaling can be achieved. Finally, we demonstrate that the scheme is robust against moderate photon loss.
