Abstract

A bstract Fusion category symmetries are finite symmetries in 1+1 dimensions described by unitary fusion categories. We classify 1+1d time-reversal invariant bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetry by using topological field theories. We first formulate two-dimensional unoriented topological field theories whose symmetry splits into time-reversal symmetry and fusion category symmetry. We then solve them to show that SPT phases are classified by equivalence classes of quintuples ( Z , M , i , s , ϕ ) where ( Z , M , i ) is a fiber functor, s is a sign, and ϕ is the action of orientation- reversing symmetry that is compatible with the fiber functor ( Z , M , i ). We apply this classification to SPT phases with Kramers-Wannier-like self-duality.

Non-invertible SPTs: an on-site realization of (1+1)d anomaly-free fusion category symmetry

Meng, Chenqi, Yang, Xinping, Tian Lan +1 more

We investigate (1+1)d symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetries. We emphasize that the UV description of an anomaly-free fusion category symmetry must include the fiber functor, giving rise to a local symmetry action, a charge category and a trivial phase. We construct an ``onsite'' matrix-product-operator (MPO) version of the Hopf algebra symmetry operators in a lattice model with tensor-product Hilbert space. In particular, we propose a systematic framework for classifying and constructing SPTs with non-invertible symmetries. An SPT phase corresponds to a Q-system in the charge category, such that the Q-system becomes a matrix algebra when the symmetry is forgotten. As an example, we provide an explicit microscopic realization of all three $\mathsf{Rep}^\dagger(D_8)$ SPT phases, including a trivial phase, and further demonstrate the $S_3$-duality among these three SPT phases.

Classification of topological phases with finite internal symmetries in all dimensions

Liang Kong, Tian Lan, Xiao-Gang Wen +2 more

A bstract We develop a mathematical theory of symmetry protected trivial (SPT) orders and anomaly-free symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders in all dimensions via two different approaches with an emphasis on the second approach. The first approach is to gauge the symmetry in the same dimension by adding topological excitations as it was done in the 2d case, in which the gauging process is mathematically described by the minimal modular extensions of unitary braided fusion 1-categories. This 2d result immediately generalizes to all dimensions except in 1d, which is treated with special care. The second approach is to use the 1-dimensional higher bulk of the SPT/SET order and the boundary-bulk relation. This approach also leads us to a precise mathematical description and a classification of SPT/SET orders in all dimensions. The equivalence of these two approaches, together with known physical results, provides us with many precise mathematical predictions.

Topological Response Theory of Abelian Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases in Two Dimensions

Meng Cheng, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

It has been shown that the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with finite Abelian symmetries can be described by Chern-Simons field theory. We propose a topological response theory to uniquely identify the SPT orders, which allows us to obtain a systematic scheme to classify bosonic SPT phases with any finite Abelian symmetry group. We point out that even for finite Abelian symmetry, there exist bosonic SPT phases beyond the current Chern-Simons theory framework. We also apply the theory to fermionic SPT phases with Zm symmetry and find the classification of SPT phases depends on the parity of m: for even m there are 2m classes, m out of which is intrinsically fermionic SPT phases and cannot be realized in any bosonic system. Finally we propose a classification scheme of fermionic SPT phases for any finite, Abelian symmetry.

Towards a Complete Classification of Symmetry-Protected Phases for Interacting Fermions in Two Dimensions

Meng Cheng, Zhen Bi, Yi‐Zhuang You +1 more

Recently, it has been shown that two-dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological(SPT) phases with on-site unitary symmetry $G$ can be completely classified by the group cohomology class $H^3(G, \mathrm{U}(1))$. Later, group super-cohomology class was proposed as a partial classification for SPT phases of interacting fermions. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the mathematical framework of $G$-extension of unitary braided tensor category(UBTC) theory. We first reproduce the partial classifications given by group super-cohomology, then we show that with an additional $H^1(G, \mathbb{Z}_2)$ structure, a complete classification of SPT phases for two-dimensional interacting fermion systems for a total symmetry group $G\times\mathbb{Z}_2^f$ can be achieved. We also discuss the classification of interacting fermionic SPT phases protected by time-reversal symmetry.

Fusion Category Symmetry I: Anomaly In-Flow and Gapped Phases

Ryan Thorngren, Yifan Wang

We study generalized discrete symmetries of quantum field theories in 1+1D generated by topological defect lines with no inverse. In particular, we describe 't Hooft anomalies and classify gapped phases stabilized by these symmetries, including new 1+1D topological phases. The algebra of these operators is not a group but rather is described by their fusion ring and crossing relations, captured algebraically as a fusion category. Such data defines a Turaev-Viro/Levin-Wen model in 2+1D, while a 1+1D system with this fusion category acting as a global symmetry defines a boundary condition. This is akin to gauging a discrete global symmetry at the boundary of Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. We describe how to "ungauge" the fusion category symmetry in these boundary conditions and separate the symmetry-preserving phases from the symmetry-breaking ones. For Tambara-Yamagami categories and their generalizations, which are associated with Kramers-Wannier-like self-dualities under orbifolding, we develop gauge theoretic techniques which simplify the analysis. We include some examples of CFTs with fusion category symmetry derived from Kramers-Wannier-like dualities as an appetizer for the Part II companion paper.

Equivariant topological quantum field theory and symmetry protected topological phases

Anton Kapustin, Alex Turzillo

Short-Range Entangled topological phases of matter are closely related to Topological Quantum Field Theory. We use this connection to classify Symmetry Protected Topological phases in low dimensions, including the case when the symmetry involves time-reversal. To accomplish this, we generalize Turaev’s description of equivariant TQFT to the unoriented case. We show that invertible unoriented equivariant TQFTs in one or fewer spatial dimensions are classified by twisted group cohomology, in agreement with the proposal of Chen, Gu, Liu and Wen. We also show that invertible oriented equivariant TQFTs in spatial dimension two or fewer are classified by ordinary group cohomology.
