Abstract

We study the quantum chaos in the Bose-Fermi Kondo model in which the impurity spin interacts with conduction electrons and a bosonic bath at the intermediate temperature in the large-$N$ limit. The out-of-time-ordered correlator is calculated based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation and the Lyapunov exponent ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ is extracted. Our calculation shows that the Lyapunov exponent monotonically increases as the Kondo coupling ${J}_{K}$ increases, and it can reach an order of ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}\ensuremath{\approx}T$ as ${J}_{K}$ approaches the multichannel Kondo fixed point ($MCK$). Furthermore, we also demonstrate that ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ decreases monotonically as the impurity and bosonic bath coupling $g$ increases, which is contrary to the general expectation that the most chaotic property occurs at the quantum critical point with the non-Fermi-liquid nature.

Fast Scrambling at the Boundary

Ancel Larzul, Anirvan M. Sengupta, Antoine Georges +1 more

Many-body systems that saturate the quantum bound on chaos are attracting interest across a wide range of fields. Notable examples include the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and its variations, all characterized by some form or randomness and all-to-all couplings. Here, we study many-body quantum chaos in a quantum impurity model showing non-Fermi-liquid physics, the overscreened multichannel S U ( N ) Kondo model. We exactly compute the low-temperature behavior of the out-of-time order correlator in the limit of large N and large number of channels, K , at a fixed ratio γ = K / N . Because of strong correlations at the impurity site, the spin fractionalizes in auxiliary fermions and bosons. We show that all the degrees of freedom of our theory acquire a Lyapunov exponent that is linear in temperature as T → 0 , with a prefactor that depends on γ . Remarkably, for N = K , the impurity spin displays maximal chaos, while bosons and fermions only reach half of the maximal Lyapunov exponent. Our results highlight two key features: a nondisordered model that is maximally chaotic due to strong correlations at its boundary, with the maximal chaos appearing in a composite gauge-invariant operator, the impurity spin, and not in the auxiliary single-particle degrees of freedom.

Quantum chaos of unitary Fermi gases in the strong pairing fluctuation region

Xinloong Han, Boyang Liu

The growth rate of the out-of-time-ordered correlator in a $N$-flavor Fermi gas is investigated and the Lyapunov exponent ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ is calculated to the order of $1/N$. We find that the Lyapunov exponent monotonically increases as the interaction strength increases from the BCS limit to the unitary region. At the unitarity, the Lyapunov exponent increases while the temperature drops and it can reach to the order of ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}\ensuremath{\sim}T$ around the critical temperature for the $N=1$ case. For $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, the Lyapunov exponent reaches its maximum ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}\ensuremath{\approx}4.35T/N$ at the critical temperature. The system scrambles faster for stronger pairing fluctuations. At the BCS limit, the Lyapunov exponent behaviors as ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}\ensuremath{\propto}{e}^{\ensuremath{\mu}/T}{a}_{s}^{2}{T}^{2}/N$.

Quantum criticality in the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo models: Interplay between fermion- and boson-induced Kondo destruction

J. H. Pixley, Stefan Kirchner, Kevin Ingersent +1 more

We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like ${|\ensuremath{\epsilon}|}^{r}$ at the Fermi energy ($\ensuremath{\epsilon}=0$) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to ${|\ensuremath{\omega}|}^{s}$. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo for the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson model with $0<r<\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\le}s<1$, and applying the numerical renormalization group to the corresponding Kondo model. At particle-hole symmetry, the models exhibit a quantum-critical point between a Kondo (fermionic strong-coupling) phase and a localized (Kondo-destroyed) phase. The two solution methods, which are in good agreement in their domain of overlap, provide access to the many-body spectrum, as well as to correlation functions including, in particular, the single-particle Green's function and the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The quantum-critical regime exhibits the hyperscaling of critical exponents and $\ensuremath{\omega}/T$ scaling in the dynamics that characterize an interacting critical point. The $(r,s)$ plane can be divided into three regions: one each in which the calculated critical properties are dominated by the bosonic bath alone or by the fermionic bath alone, and between these two regions, a third in which the bosonic bath governs the critical spin response but both baths influence the renormalization-group flow near the quantum-critical point.

Quantum chaos and phase transition in the Yukawa–Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Andrew Davis, Yuxuan Wang

We analyze the relation between quantum chaotic behavior and phase transitions of the Yukawa--Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model as a function of filling and temperature, which describes random Yukawa interactions between $N$ complex fermions and $M$ bosons in zero spatial dimensions for both the non-Fermi liquid and insulating states at finite temperature and chemical potential. We solve the ladder equations for the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) for both bosons and fermions. Despite the appearance of the chemical potential in the Hamiltonian, which explicitly introduces an additional energy scale, the OTOCs for the fermions and bosons in the non-Fermi liquid state turn out to be unaffected, and the Lyapunov exponents that diagnose chaos remain maximal. As the chemical potential increases, the system is known to experience a first-order transition from a critical phase to a gapped insulating phase. We postulate that the boundary of the region in parameter space where each phase is (meta)stable coincides with the curve on which the Lyapunov exponent is maximal. By calculating the exponent in the insulating phase and comparing to numerical results on the boundaries of stability, we show that this is plausible.

Order parameter for the multichannel Kondo model at quantum criticality

Ru Zheng, Rong-Qiang He, Zhong-Yi Lu

A multichannel Kondo model, where two or more equivalent but independent channels of electrons compete to screen a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity, shows overcompensation of the impurity spin, leading to the non-Fermi-liquid behavior in various thermodynamic and transport properties. However, when the channel symmetry is broken, an impurity quantum phase transition can occur at zero temperature. Identification of an order parameter describing the impurity quantum phase transition is very difficult since it is beyond the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory. By employing the natural orbitals renormalization group method, we study both two-channel and three-channel Kondo models, from the perspective of spin correlation between the impurity and electrons in electronic channels. Here we demonstrate that by introducing the spin-correlation ratio as an order parameter we can characterize impurity quantum phase transitions driven by channel asymmetry. In particular, the universal critical exponents $\ensuremath{\beta}$ of the spin-correlation ratio and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ of the correlation length are explicitly determined by finite-size-scaling analysis, namely, $\ensuremath{\beta}=0.10(1)$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}=2.0(1)$, and $\ensuremath{\beta}=0.10(1)$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}=2.5(1)$ for the two-channel and three-channel Kondo models, respectively.

Kondo destruction Quantum Phase Transition in SU(2) symmetric Bose-Fermi Anderson Model.

Ang Cai, Qimiao Si A

In quantum critical heavy fermion systems, local moments are coupled to both collective spin fluctuations and conduction electrons. As such, the Bose-Fermi Kondo model, describing the coupling of a local moment to both a bosonic and a fermionic bath, has been of extensive interest. For the model in the presence of SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, questions have been raised about its phase diagram. Here we develop a version of continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method suitable for addressing this issue; this procedure can reach sufficiently low temperatures while preserving the SU(2) symmetry. Using this method for the Bose-Fermi Anderson model, we clarify the renormalization-group fixed points and the phase diagram for the case with a constant fermionic-bath density of states and a power-law bosonic-bath spectral function $\rho_{b}(\omega) \propto \omega^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). We find two types of Kondo destruction QCP, depending on the power-law exponent $s$ in the bosonic bath spectrum. For $s^{*}<s<1$, both types of QCPs exist and, in the parameter regime accessible by an analytical $\epsilon$-expansion renormalization-group calculation (here $\epsilon=1-s$), the CT-QMC result is fully consistent with prior predictions by the latter method. For $s<s^{*}$, there is only one type of QCP. At both type of Kondo destruction QCPs, we find that the exponent of the local spin susceptibility $\eta$ obeys the relation $\eta=\epsilon$, which has important implications for Kondo destruction QCP in the Kondo lattice problem.
