Abstract

In quantum critical heavy fermion systems, local moments are coupled to both collective spin fluctuations and conduction electrons. As such, the Bose-Fermi Kondo model, describing the coupling of a local moment to both a bosonic and a fermionic bath, has been of extensive interest. For the model in the presence of SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, questions have been raised about its phase diagram. Here we develop a version of continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method suitable for addressing this issue; this procedure can reach sufficiently low temperatures while preserving the SU(2) symmetry. Using this method for the Bose-Fermi Anderson model, we clarify the renormalization-group fixed points and the phase diagram for the case with a constant fermionic-bath density of states and a power-law bosonic-bath spectral function $\rho_{b}(\omega) \propto \omega^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). We find two types of Kondo destruction QCP, depending on the power-law exponent $s$ in the bosonic bath spectrum. For $s^{*}<s<1$, both types of QCPs exist and, in the parameter regime accessible by an analytical $\epsilon$-expansion renormalization-group calculation (here $\epsilon=1-s$), the CT-QMC result is fully consistent with prior predictions by the latter method. For $s<s^{*}$, there is only one type of QCP. At both type of Kondo destruction QCPs, we find that the exponent of the local spin susceptibility $\eta$ obeys the relation $\eta=\epsilon$, which has important implications for Kondo destruction QCP in the Kondo lattice problem.

Quantum criticality in the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo models: Interplay between fermion- and boson-induced Kondo destruction

J. H. Pixley, Stefan Kirchner, Kevin Ingersent +1 more

We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like ${|\ensuremath{\epsilon}|}^{r}$ at the Fermi energy ($\ensuremath{\epsilon}=0$) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to ${|\ensuremath{\omega}|}^{s}$. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo for the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson model with $0<r<\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\le}s<1$, and applying the numerical renormalization group to the corresponding Kondo model. At particle-hole symmetry, the models exhibit a quantum-critical point between a Kondo (fermionic strong-coupling) phase and a localized (Kondo-destroyed) phase. The two solution methods, which are in good agreement in their domain of overlap, provide access to the many-body spectrum, as well as to correlation functions including, in particular, the single-particle Green's function and the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The quantum-critical regime exhibits the hyperscaling of critical exponents and $\ensuremath{\omega}/T$ scaling in the dynamics that characterize an interacting critical point. The $(r,s)$ plane can be divided into three regions: one each in which the calculated critical properties are dominated by the bosonic bath alone or by the fermionic bath alone, and between these two regions, a third in which the bosonic bath governs the critical spin response but both baths influence the renormalization-group flow near the quantum-critical point.

Quantum critical Kondo destruction in the Bose-Fermi Kondo model with a local transverse field

Emilian M. Nica, Kevin Ingersent, Jian‐Xin Zhu +1 more

Recent studies of the global phase diagram of quantum-critical heavy-fermion metals prompt consideration of the interplay between the Kondo interactions and quantum fluctuations of the local moments alone. Toward this goal, we study a Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM) with Ising anisotropy in the presence of a local transverse field that generates quantum fluctuations in the local-moment sector. We apply the numerical renormalization-group method to the case of a sub-Ohmic bosonic bath exponent and a constant conduction-electron density of states. Starting in the Kondo phase at zero transverse field, there is a smooth crossover with increasing transverse field from a fully screened to a fully polarized impurity spin. By contrast, if the system starts in its localized phase, then increasing the transverse field causes a continuous, Kondo-destruction transition into the partially polarized Kondo phase. The critical exponents at this quantum phase transition exhibit hyperscaling and take essentially the same values as those of the BFKM in zero transverse field. The many-body spectrum at criticality varies continuously with the bare transverse field, indicating a line of critical points. We discuss implications of these results for the global phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model.

Kondo destruction and fixed-point annihilation in a Bose-Fermi Kondo model

Haoyu Hu, Qimiao Si A

Quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations is playing a central role in elucidating the behavior of strange metals. A prominent case appears in Kondo lattice systems, which have been extensively analysed in terms of an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, a spin is simultaneously coupled to conduction electron bands and gapless vector bosons that represent magnetic fluctuations. The Bose-Fermi Kondo model features interacting fixed points of Kondo destruction with such properties as dynamical Planckian ($\hbar ω/ k_{\rm B} T$) scaling and loss of quasiparticles. Here we carry out a renormalization-group analysis of the model with spin isotropy and identify pair-wise annihilations of the fixed points as the spectrum of the bosonic bath evolves. Our analysis not only provides an essentially complete understanding of the previous numerical results of an SU(2)-symmetric model, but also reveals a surprising feature of sequential fixed-point annihilation. Our results lay the foundation for the understanding of quantum criticality in spin-isotropic heavy-fermion metals as well as in doped Mott-Hubbard systems.

Entanglement entropy near Kondo-destruction quantum critical points

J. H. Pixley, Tathagata Chowdhury, Matthew Miecnikowski +3 more

We study the impurity entanglement entropy $S_e$ in quantum impurity models that feature a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point (QCP) arising from a pseudogap in the conduction-band density of states or from coupling to a bosonic bath. On the local-moment (Kondo-destroyed) side of the QCP, the entanglement entropy contains a critical component that can be related to the order parameter characterizing the quantum phase transition. In Kondo models describing a spin-$\Simp$, $S_e$ assumes its maximal value of $\ln(2\Simp+1)$ at the QCP and throughout the Kondo phase, independent of features such as particle-hole symmetry and under- or over-screening. In Anderson models, $S_e$ is nonuniversal at the QCP, and at particle-hole symmetry, rises monotonically on passage from the local-moment phase to the Kondo phase; breaking this symmetry can lead to a cusp peak in $S_e$ due to a divergent charge susceptibility at the QCP. Implications of these results for quantum critical systems and quantum dots are discussed.

SU(2)-Symmetric Spin-Boson Model: Quantum Criticality, Fixed-Point Annihilation, and Duality

Manuel Weber, Matthias Vojta C

The annihilation of two intermediate-coupling renormalization-group (RG) fixed points is of interest in diverse fields from statistical mechanics to high-energy physics, but has so far only been studied using perturbative techniques. Here we present high-accuracy quantum Monte Carlo results for the SU(2)-symmetric S=1/2 spin-boson (or Bose-Kondo) model. We study the model with a power-law bath spectrum ∝ω^{s} where, in addition to a critical phase predicted by perturbative RG, a stable strong-coupling phase is present. Using a detailed scaling analysis, we provide direct numerical evidence for the collision and annihilation of two RG fixed points at s^{*}=0.6540(2), causing the critical phase to disappear for s<s^{*}. In particular, we uncover a surprising duality between the two fixed points, corresponding to a reflection symmetry of the RG beta function, which we utilize to make analytical predictions at strong coupling which are in excellent agreement with numerics. Our work makes phenomena of fixed-point annihilation accessible to large-scale simulations, and we comment on the consequences for impurity moments in critical magnets.

Berry Phase and the Breakdown of the Quantum to Classical Mapping for the Quantum Critical Point of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model

Stefan Kirchner, Qimiao Si A

The phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model contains an SU(2)-invariant Kondo-screened phase separated by a continuous quantum phase transition from a Kondo-destroyed local moment phase. We analyze the effect of the Berry phase term of the spin path integral on the quantum critical properties of this quantum impurity model. For a range of the power-law exponent characterizing the spectral density of the dissipative bosonic bath, neglecting the influence of the Berry phase term makes the fixed point Gaussian. For the same range of the spectral density exponent, incorporating the Berry phase term leads instead to an interacting fixed point, for which a quantum to classical mapping breaks down. Some general implications of our results are discussed.
