Abstract

Abstract We study the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations. At half-filling, we identify an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase, which has one gapless spin mode and algebraic spin–spin correlations but exponential decay scalar chiral–chiral correlations, between a metallic phase at weak coupling and Mott insulating dimer phase at strong interaction. Upon light doping the gapless spin liquid, the system exhibits power-law charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations but short-range single-particle, spin–spin, and chiral–chiral correlations. Similar to CDW correlations, the superconducting correlations also decay in power-law but oscillate in sign as a function of distance, which is consistent with the striped pair-density wave. When further doping the gapless spin liquid phase or doping the dimer order phase, another phase takes over, which has similar CDW correlations but all other correlations decay exponentially.

Pair density wave in the doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

Hong‐Chen Jiang

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with a spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW), and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with $d$-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive ${V}_{pd}$ interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive ${V}_{pd}$, the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Cheng Peng, Yi‐Fan Jiang, Thomas Devereaux +1 more

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction JK, which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t-JK model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d-wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Superconductivity in the lightly doped Hubbard model on the cylindrical honeycomb lattice

Cheng Peng, D. N. Sheng, Hong‐Chen Jiang

We have performed large-scale density-matrix renormalization group studies of the lightly doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice on long three- and four-leg cylinders. We find that the ground state of the system upon lightly doping is consistent with that of a superconducting state with coexisting quasi-long-range superconducting and charge density wave orders. Both the superconducting and charge density wave correlations decay as a power law at long distances with corresponding exponents ${K}_{sc}<2$ and ${K}_{c}<2$. On the contrary, the spin-spin and single-particle correlations decay exponentially, although with relatively long correlation lengths.

Superconductivity in the doped t − J model: Results for four-leg cylinders

Hong‐Chen Jiang, Zheng-Yu Weng, Steven Allan Kivelson

We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the lightly doped $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model on a four-leg cylinder with doped hole concentrations per site $\ensuremath{\delta}=5%\text{--}12.5%$. By keeping an unusually large number of states and long system sizes, we are able to accurately document the interplay between superconductivity, spin, and charge-density-wave orders. The long-distance behavior is consistent with that of a Luther-Emery liquid with a spin gap and power-law charge-density-wave and superconducting correlations. This is the widest $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ or Hubbard system in which power-law superconducting correlations have been established.

Hubbard model on triangular N -leg cylinders: Chiral and nonchiral spin liquids

Luca F. Tocchio, Arianna Montorsi, Federico Becca

The existence of a gapped chiral spin liquid has been recently suggested in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, by intensive density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations [A. Szasz, J. Motruk, M. P. Zaletel, and J. E. Moore, Phys. Rev. X 10, 021042 (2020)]. Here, we report the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo technique based upon Jastrow-Slater wave functions, implemented with backflow correlations. As in DMRG calculations, we consider $N$-leg cylinders. For $N=4$ and in the presence of a next-nearest-neighbor hopping, a chiral spin liquid emerges between the metal and the insulator with magnetic quasi-long-range order. Within our approach, the chiral state is gapped and breaks the reflection symmetry. By contrast, for both $N=5$ and 6, the chiral spin liquid is not the state with the lowest variational energy: in the former case, a nematic spin liquid is found in the entire insulating regime, while for the less frustrated case with $N=6$ the results are very similar to that obtained on two-dimensional clusters [L. F. Tocchio, A. Montorsi, and F. Becca, Phys. Rev. B 102, 115150 (2020)], with an antiferromagnetic phase close to the metal-insulator transition and a nematic spin liquid in the strong-coupling regime.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Yi‐Fan Jiang, Hong‐Chen Jiang

We study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- $({J}_{1})$, next-nearest- $({J}_{2})$, and third-neighbor $({J}_{3})$ interactions by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to ${L}_{x}=48$ and circumference ${L}_{y}=6--12$. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model is gapped, which is characterized by the absence of a gapless mode and by short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of ${J}_{3}$ interaction, we find that a critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi long ranged and decay as a power law at long distances.
