Abstract

We study the kinetics after a low temperature quench of the one-dimensional Ising model with long range interactions between spins at distance r r decaying as r^{-\alpha} r − α . For \alpha =0 α = 0 , i.e. mean field, all spins evolve coherently quickly driving the system towards a magnetised state. In the weak long range regime with \alpha >1 α > 1 there is a coarsening behaviour with competing domains of opposite sign without development of magnetisation. For strong long range, i.e. 0<\alpha <1 0 < α < 1 , we show that the system shows both features, with probability P_\alpha (N) P α ( N ) of having the latter one, with the different limiting behaviours \lim _{N\to \infty}P_\alpha (N)=0 lim N → ∞ P α ( N ) = 0 (at fixed \alpha<1 α < 1 ) and \lim _{\alpha \to 1}P_\alpha (N)=1 lim α → 1 P α ( N ) = 1 (at fixed finite N N ). We discuss how this behaviour is a manifestation of an underlying dynamical scaling symmetry due to the presence of a single characteristic time \tau _\alpha (N)\sim N^\alpha τ α ( N ) ∼ N α .

Dynamics of the order parameter statistics in the long range Ising model

Nishan Ranabhat, Mario Collura

We study the relaxation of the local ferromagnetic order in the transverse field quantum Ising chain with power-law decaying interactions \sim 1/r^\alpha ∼ 1 / r α . We prepare the system in the GHZ state and study the time evolution of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the order parameter within a block of \ell ℓ when quenching the transverse field. The model is known to support long range order at finite temperature for \alpha\leq 2.0 α ≤ 2.0 . In this regime, quasi-localized topological magnetic defects are expected to strongly affect the equilibration of the full probability distribution. We highlight different dynamical regimes where gaussification mechanism may be slowed down by confinement and eventually breaks. We further study the PDF dynamics induced by changing the effective dimensionality of the system; we mimic this by quenching the range of the interactions. As a matter of fact, the behavior of the system crucially depends on the value of \alpha α governing the unitary evolution.

Interrupted coarsening in the zero-temperature kinetic Ising chain driven by a periodic external field

Su Do Yi, Seung Ki Baek

If quenched to zero temperature, the one-dimensional Ising spin chain undergoes coarsening, whereby the density of domain walls decays algebraically in time. We show that this coarsening process can be interrupted by exerting a rapidly oscillating periodic field with enough strength to compete with the spin-spin interaction. By analyzing correlation functions and the distribution of domain lengths both analytically and numerically, we observe nontrivial correlation with more than one length scale at the threshold field strength.

One-dimensional kinetic Ising model with competing spin-flip and spin-exchange dynamics: Ordering in the case of long-range exchanges

Michel Droz, Zoltàn Ràcz, P. Tartaglia

Ordering of a one-dimensional stochastic Ising model evolving by a combination of spin flips and spin exchanges is investigated. The spin-flip rates satisfy detailed balance for the equilibrium state of the Ising model at temperature T, while the spin exchanges are random and of arbitrary range. Analytical methods and Monte Carlo simulations are used to show that, depending on the details of the spin-flip rate, finite-temperature phase transition may or may not occur in the system. When ordering occurs, it is of mean-field type and the scaling function describing the finite-size scaling of the magnetization fluctuations is found to be indistinguishable from that of an equilibrium Ising model with infinite-range interaction.

Nontrivial maturation metastate-average state in a one-dimensional long-range Ising spin glass: Above and below the upper critical range

S. Jensen, N. Read, A. P. Young

Understanding the low-temperature pure state structure of spin glasses remains an open problem in the field of statistical mechanics of disordered systems. Here we study Monte Carlo dynamics, performing simulations of the growth of correlations following a quench from infinite temperature to a temperature well below the spin-glass transition temperature T_{c} for a one-dimensional Ising spin-glass model with diluted long-range interactions. In this model, the probability P_{ij} that an edge {i,j} has nonvanishing interaction falls as a power law with chord distance, P_{ij}∝1/R_{ij}^{2σ}, and we study a range of values of σ with 1/2<σ<1. We consider a correlation function C_{4}(r,t). A dynamic correlation length that shows power-law growth with time ξ(t)∝t^{1/z} can be identified in the data and, for large time t, C_{4}(r,t) decays as a power law r^{-α_{d}} with distance r when r≪ξ(t). The calculation can be interpreted in terms of the maturation metastate averaged Gibbs state, or MMAS, and the decay exponent α_{d} differentiates between a trivial MMAS (α_{d}=0), as expected in the droplet picture of spin glasses, and a nontrivial MMAS (α_{d}≠0), as in the replica-symmetry-breaking (RSB) or chaotic pairs pictures. We find nonzero α_{d} even in the regime σ>2/3 which corresponds to short-range systems below six dimensions. For σ<2/3, the decay exponent α_{d} follows the RSB prediction for the decay exponent α_{s}=3-4σ of the static metastate, consistent with a conjectured statics-dynamics relation, while it approaches α_{d}=1-σ in the regime 2/3<σ<1; however, it deviates from both lines in the vicinity of σ=2/3.

Study of the nonequilibrium critical quenching and the annealing dynamics for the long-range Ising model in one dimension

D. E. Rodríguez, M. A. Bab, Ezequiel Vicente Albano

Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are employed in order to study the dynamic critical behaviour of the one-dimensional Ising magnet, with algebraically decaying long-range interactions of the form 1/rd + σ, with σ = 0.75. The critical temperature, as well as the critical exponents, are evaluated from the power-law behaviour of suitable physical observables when the system is quenched from uncorrelated states, corresponding to infinite temperature, to the critical point. These results are compared with those obtained from the dynamic evolution of the system when it is annealed at the critical point from the ordered state. Also, the critical temperature in the infinite interaction limit is obtained by means of a finite-range scaling analysis of data measured with different truncated interaction ranges. All the estimated static critical exponents (γ/ν, β/ν, and 1/ν) are in good agreement with renormalization group (RG) results and previously reported numerical data obtained under equilibrium conditions. On the other hand, the dynamic exponent of the initial increase of the magnetization (θ) was close to RG predictions. However, the dynamic exponent z of the time correlation length is slightly different to the RG results probably due to the fact that it may depend on the specific dynamics used or because the two-loop expansion used in the RG analysis may be insufficient.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of random field Ising spin chains: Exact results via real space renormalization group

Daniel S. Fisher, Pierre Le Doussal, Cécile Monthus

The nonequilibrium dynamics of classical random Ising spin chains with nonconserved magnetization are studied using an asymptotically exact real space renormalization group (RSRG). We focus on random field Ising model (RFIM) spin chains with and without a uniform applied field, as well as on Ising spin glass chains in an applied field. For the RFIM we consider a universal regime where the random field and the temperature are both much smaller than the exchange coupling. In this regime, the Imry-Ma length that sets the scale of the equilibrium correlations is large and the coarsening of domains from random initial conditions (e.g., a quench from high temperature) occurs over a wide range of length scales. The two types of domain walls that occur diffuse in opposite random potentials, of the form studied by Sinai, and domain walls annihilate when they meet. Using the RSRG we compute many universal asymptotic properties of both the nonequilibrium dynamics and the equilibrium limit. We find that the configurations of the domain walls converge rapidly toward a set of system-specific time-dependent positions that are independent of the initial conditions. Thus the behavior of this nonequilibrium system is pseudodeterministic at long times because of the broad distributions of barriers that occur on the long length scales involved. Specifically, we obtain the time dependence of the energy, the magnetization, and the distribution of domain sizes (found to be statistically independent). The equilibrium limits agree with known exact results. We obtain the exact scaling form of the two-point equal time correlation function <S0(t)Sx(t)> and the two-time autocorrelations <S0(t('))S0(t)>. We also compute the persistence properties of a single spin, of local magnetization, and of domains. The analogous quantities for the +/-J Ising spin glass in an applied field are obtained from the RFIM via a gauge transformation. In addition to these we compute the two-point two-time correlation function <S0(t)Sx(t)><S0(t('))Sx(t('))> which can in principle be measured by experiments on spin-glass-like systems. The thermal fluctuations are studied and found to be dominated by rare events; in particular all moments of truncated equal time correlations are computed. Physical properties which are typically measured in aging experiments are also studied, focusing on the response to a small magnetic field which is applied after waiting for the system to equilibrate for a time t(w). The nonequilibrium fluctuation-dissipation ratio X(t,t(w)) is computed. We find that for (t-t(w)) approximately t(alpha)(w) with alpha;<1, the ratio equal to its equilibrium value X=1, although time translational invariance does not hold in this regime. For t-t(w) approximately t(w) the ratio exhibits an aging regime with a nontrivial X=X(t/t(w)) not equal to 1, but the behavior is markedly different from mean field theory. Finally the distribution of the total magnetization and of the number of domains is computed for large finite size systems. General issues about convergence toward equilibrium and the possibilities of weakly history-dependent evolution in other random systems are discussed.
