Abstract

We introduce the notion of mixed symmetry quantum phase transition (MSQPT) as singularities in the transformation of the lowest-energy state properties of a system of identical particles inside each permutation symmetry sector μ, when some Hamiltonian control parameters λ are varied. We use a three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, with U(3) dynamical symmetry, to exemplify our construction. After reviewing the construction of U(3) unitary irreducible representations using Young tableaux and the Gelfand basis, we first study the case of a finite number N of three-level atoms, showing that some precursors (fidelity susceptibility, level population, etc.) of MSQPTs appear in all permutation symmetry sectors. Using coherent (quasiclassical) states of U(3) as variational states, we compute the lowest-energy density for each sector μ in the thermodynamic N→∞ limit. Extending the control parameter space by μ, the phase diagram exhibits four distinct quantum phases in the λ-μ plane that coexist at a quadruple point. The ground state of the whole system belongs to the fully symmetric sector μ=1 and shows a fourfold degeneracy, due to the spontaneous breakdown of the parity symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The restoration of this discrete symmetry leads to the formation of four-component Schrödinger cat states.

Mixed permutation symmetry quantum phase transitions of critical three-level atom models

Alberto Mayorgas, Julio Guerrero, Manuel Calixto

We define the concept of Mixed Symmetry Quantum Phase Transition (MSQPT), considering each permutation symmetry sector \mu μ of an identical particles system, as singularities in the properties of the lowest-energy state into each \mu μ when shifting a Hamiltonian control parameter \lambda λ . A three-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model is chosen to typify our construction. Firstly, we analyze the finite number N N of particles case, proving the presence of MSQPT precursors. Then, in the thermodynamic limit N\to∞ N → ∞ , we calculate the lowest-energy density inside each sector \mu μ , augmenting the control parameter space by \mu μ , and showing a phase diagram with four different quantum phases.

Lieb-Mattis ordering theorem of electronic energy levels in the thermodynamic limit

Manuel Calixto, Alberto Mayorgas, Julio Guerrero

The Lieb-Mattis theorem orders the lowest-energy states of total spin s of a system of P interacting fermions. We generalize these predictions to fermionic mixtures of P particles with more than N=2 spinor components or species in the thermodynamic limit P→∞. The lowest-energy state inside each permutation symmetry sector h, arising in the P-fold tensor product decomposition, is well approximated by a U(N) coherent (quasiclassical variational) state, especially in the limit P→∞. In particular, the ground state of the system belongs the most symmetric (dominant Young tableau h_{0}) configuration. We exemplify our construction with the N=3 level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, with a previous motivation on pairing correlations and U(N)-invariant quantum Hall ferromagnets. In the limit P→∞, each lowest-energy state within each permutation symmetry sector h undergoes a quantum phase transition for a critical value λ_{c}(h) of the exchange coupling constant λ, depending on h. This generalizes standard quantum phase transitions and their phase diagrams corresponding to the ground state belonging to the most symmetric sector h_{0}.

Phase space analysis of the 3-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model using parity adapted U(D)-spin coherent states

Alberto Mayorgas, Julio Guerrero, Manuel Calixto

Abstract We study the phase-space properties of the 3-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick as paradigmatic case of critical, parity symmetric, N-quDit systems undergoing a quantum phase transition in the thermodynamic limit N → ∞. We generalize U(2) spin coherent states to U(D) (quDits), and define the coherent state representation Qψ (Husimi function) of a symmetric N- quDit state |ψ〉 in the phase space ℂP D −1 = U(D)/[U(1) × U(D − 1)]. This allows us to define parity adapted U(D) coherent states (𝕔-DCATs), which reproduce accurately the lowest energy Hamiltonian eigenstates obtained by numerical diagonalization. We visualize precursors of the QPTs by plotting localization measures (Husimi function and its moments) of the parity adapted U(D) coherent states and the numerical Hamiltonian eigenstates for a finite number of particles.

Degeneracy beyond the parity-symmetry protection in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

Jamil Khalouf-Rivera, Miguel Carvajal, Francisco Pérez-Bernal

Degeneracy patterns in quantum mechanics stem from the system symmetries. In particular, the broken-symmetry phase in the well-known Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model is composed of doubly-degenerate states of different parity. In this work, we show that such doublets can exist even if parity is not conserved. For this purpose, our starting point is an anharmonic LMG Hamiltonian with a second-order ground-state quantum phase transition (GSQPT) and a rich spectrum, with two different excited-state quantum phase transitions. The inclusion in the Hamiltonian of a term inducing a first-order GSQPT breaks the parity symmetry but conserving the exponential degeneracy in the energy doublets. We demonstrate that this phenomenon can be traced back to the existence of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry (reflection symmetry) in the system's classical limit phase space that leads to an anti-unitary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry in the quantum system.

Localization measures of parity adapted U(D) -spin coherent states applied to the phase space analysis of the D -level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

Alberto Mayorgas, Julio Guerrero, Manuel Calixto

We study phase space properties of critical, parity symmetric, N-qudit systems undergoing a quantum phase transition (QPT) in the thermodynamic N→∞ limit. The D=3 level (qutrit) Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model is eventually examined as a particular example. For this purpose, we consider U(D)-spin coherent states (DSCS), generalizing the standard D=2 atomic coherent states, to define the coherent state representation Q_{ψ} (Husimi function) of a symmetric N-qudit state |ψ〉 in the phase space CP^{D-1} (complex projective manifold). DSCS are good variational approximations to the ground state of an N-qudit system, especially in the N→∞ limit, where the discrete parity symmetry Z_{2}^{D-1} is spontaneously broken. For finite N, parity can be restored by projecting DSCS onto 2^{D-1} different parity invariant subspaces, which define generalized "Schrödinger cat states" reproducing quite faithfully low-lying Hamiltonian eigenstates obtained by numerical diagonalization. Precursors of the QPT are then visualized for finite N by plotting the Husimi function of these parity projected DSCS in phase space, together with their Husimi moments and Wehrl entropy, in the neighborhood of the critical points. These are good localization measures and markers of the QPT.

Information diagrams in the study of entanglement in symmetric multi-quDit systems and applications to quantum phase transitions in Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick D-level atom models

Julio Guerrero, Alberto Mayorgas, Manuel Calixto

Abstract In this paper we pursue the use of information measures (in particular, information diagrams) for the study of entanglement in symmetric multi-quDit systems. We use generalizations to $${U}(D)$$ U ( D ) of spin $${U}(2)$$ U ( 2 ) coherent states and their adaptation to parity (multicomponent Schrödinger cats), and we analyse one- and two-quDit reduced density matrices. We use these correlation measures to characterize quantum phase transitions occurring in Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick models of $$D=3$$ D = 3 -level identical atoms, and we propose the rank of the corresponding reduced density matrix as a discrete order parameter.
