Enhancement of boson superfluidity in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture

Abstract

We examine the effect of boson-fermion interaction in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture by using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the boson superfluidity is enhanced by fermions for a weak boson-fermion coupling at an approximate integer boson filling factor (e.g., $0.935\le ρ_b \le 1.0$), and this enhancement is produced both in a fermion metallic state and in a fermion insulating state. A metal-insulator phase transition of fermions induced by boson-fermion interaction is observed even though there is no fermion-fermion interaction in the parent Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we find that the boson superfluid order and density wave order can coexist in a deep fermion Mott region. All these features could be measured in future experiments and open up the possibility of detecting the new physical effect in the Bose-Fermi mixture.

Mixture of scalar bosons and two-color fermions in one dimension: Superfluid-insulator transitions

Richard Giovanni Avella, Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco +1 more

Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of nontrivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These nontrivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\frac{1}{2}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$, with the plus (minus) sign for repulsive (attractive) interactions and $n$ an integer. Far from fermionic half filling, the boson-fermion interaction drives a gapless-gapped transition in the spin sector. Our findings could be observed experimentally in state-of-the-art cold-atom setups.

Many-body effects in a Bose-Fermi mixture

Kazuto Noda, Robert Peters, Norio Kawakami +1 more

We investigate many-body effects on a mixture of interacting bosons and fermions loaded in an optical lattice using a generalized dynamical mean-field theory combined with the numerical renormalization group. We show that strong correlation effects emerge in the presence of bosonic superfluidity, leading to a renormalized peak structure near the Fermi level in the density of states for fermions. Remarkably, this kind of strong renormalization appears not only in the metallic phase but also in the insulating phases of fermions such as in the empty- and filled-band limit. A systematic analysis of the relation between the quasiparticle weight and the strength of superfluidity reveals that the renormalization effect is indeed caused by the boson degrees of freedom. It is found that such renormalization is also relevant to a supersolid phase consisting of a density-wave ordering of fermions accompanied by bosonic superfluidity. This sheds light on the origin of the peak structure in the supersolid phase.

Superfluid and Mott-insulator phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Aleksander Zujev, A. Baldwin, Richard T. Scalettar +3 more

We study the ground state phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices with quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the canonical worm algorithm. Depending on the filling of bosons and fermions, and the on-site intra- and interspecies interaction, different kinds of incompressible and superfluid phases appear. On the compressible side, correlations between bosons and fermions can lead to a distinctive behavior of the bosonic superfluid density and the fermionic stiffness, as well as of the equal-time Green functions, which allow one to identify regions where the two species exhibit anticorrelated flow. We present here complete phase diagrams for these systems at different fillings and as a function of the interaction parameters.

Competition of superfluidity and density waves in one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

E. Orignac, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Yoshikazu Suzumura

We study a mixture of one-dimensional bosons and spinless fermions at incommensurate filling using phenomenological bosonization and Green's function techniques. We derive the relation between the parameters of the microscopic Hamiltonian and macroscopic observables. Galilean invariance results in extra constraints for the current-current interactions. We obtain the exact exponents for the various response functions, and show that superfluid fluctuations are enhanced by the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction and suppressed by the effective boson-fermion current-current interaction. In the case of a bosonized model with purely density-density interaction, when the effective boson-fermion density-density interaction is weak enough, the superfluid exponent of the bosons has a nonmonotonic variation with the ratio of the fermion velocity to the boson velocity. In contrast, the density-wave exponent and the exponent for fermionic superfluidity are monotonic functions of the velocity ratio.

Fermion-mediated long-range interactions of bosons in the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model

Alexander Mering, Michael Fleischhauer

The ground-state phase diagram of mixtures of spin polarized fermions and bosons in a 1D periodic lattice is discussed in the limit of large fermion hopping and half filling of the fermions. Numerical simulations performed with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) show in addition to bosonic Mott insulating (MI), superfluid (SF), and charge density-wave phases (CDW) a yet unreported phase with spatial separation of MI and CDW regions. We derive an effective bosonic theory which allows for a complete understanding and quantitative prediction of the bosonic phase diagram. In particular the origin of CDW phase and the MI-CDW phase separation is revealed as an effective fermion-mediated long-range interaction between bosons with alternating sign.

Pairing of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures with unequal masses

Matteo Rizzi, Adilet Imambekov

We have considered one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture with equal densities and unequal masses using numerical density matrix renormalization group. For the mass ratio of K-Rb mixture and attraction between bosons and fermions, we determined the phase diagram. For weak boson-boson interactions, there is a direct transition between two-component Luttinger liquid and collapsed phases as the boson-fermion attraction is increased. For strong enough boson-boson interactions, we find an intermediate ``paired'' phase, which is a single-component Luttinger liquid of composite particles. We investigated correlation functions of such a ``paired'' phase, studied the stability of ``paired'' phase to density imbalance, and discussed various experimental techniques which can be used to detect it.
