Abstract

This paper introduces algorithms for the successive-cancellation decoding and the successive-cancellation list decoding of binary polar source/channel codes. By using the symmetric parametrization of conditional probability, we reduce both space and time complexity compared to the original algorithm introduced by Tal and Vardy.

Efficient stochastic list successive cancellation decoder for polar codes

Xiao Liang, Chuan Zhang, Menghui Xu +2 more

Representing continuous values by streams of random binary bits, stochastic decoding has shown advantages in both hardware efficiency and fault tolerance, therefore has been widely adopted by iterative decoding of error correction codes such as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and so on. Recently, polar codes, the first codes that can provably achieve the capacity of symmetric binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMCs), have drawn a lot of attentions from both academia and industry. Although, polar codes with list successive cancellation (SC) decoding can outperform several best-known LDPC codes even within high error-rate regions, the linearly increasing hardware complexity makes its efficient implementation difficult. To this end, the stochastic list SC polar decoding algorithm is proposed in this paper to provide a good tradeoff between performance and complexity. In order to increase the decoding performance of stochastic list SC polar decoder, doubling probability approach is presented. The corresponding hardware architecture is also given. The approximate doubling approach is employed to facilitate the efficient implementation. Implementation results have shown that the proposed stochastic list SC polar decoder can achieve a good trade-off between performance and complexity.

Symbol-Based Successive Cancellation List Decoder for Polar Codes

Chenrong Xiong, Jun Ting Lin, Zhiyuan Yan

Abstract—Polar codes is promising because they can provably achieve the channel capacity while having an explicit construc-tion method. Lots of work have been done for the bit-based decoding algorithm for polar codes. In this paper, generalized symbol-based successive cancellation (SC) and SC list decoding algorithms are discussed. A symbol-based recursive channel combination relationship is proposed to calculate the symbol-based channel transition probability. This proposed method needs less additions than the maximum-likelihood decoder used by the existing symbol-based polar decoding algorithm. In addition, a two-stage list pruning network is proposed to simplify the list pruning network for the symbol-based SC list decoding algorithm. Index Terms—Error control codes, polar codes, successive cancellation decoding, list decoding I.

Simplified Successive-Cancellation List decoding of polar codes

Seyyed Ali Hashemi, Carlo Condo, Warren J. Gross

The Successive-Cancellation List (SCL) decoding algorithm is one of the most promising approaches towards practical polar code decoding. It is able to provide a good trade-off between error-correction performance and complexity, tunable through the size of the list. In this paper, we show that in the conventional formulation of SCL, there are redundant calculations which do not need to be performed in the course of the algorithm. We simplify SCL by removing these redundant calculations and prove that the proposed simplified SCL and the conventional SCL algorithms are equivalent. The simplified SCL algorithm is valid for any code and can reduce the time-complexity of SCL without affecting the space complexity.

On the Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes with Arbitrary Linear Binary Kernels

Zhiliang Huang, Zhang, Shiyi, Zhang, Feiyan +2 more

A method for efficiently successive cancellation (SC) decoding of polar codes with high-dimensional linear binary kernels (HDLBK) is presented and analyzed. We devise a $l$-expressions method which can obtain simplified recursive formulas of SC decoder in likelihood ratio form for arbitrary linear binary kernels to reduce the complexity of corresponding SC decoder. By considering the bit-channel transition probabilities $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|0)$ and $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|1)$ separately, a $W$-expressions method is proposed to further reduce the complexity of HDLBK based SC decoder. For a $m\times m$ binary kernel, the complexity of straightforward SC decoder is $O(2^{m}N\log N)$. With $W$-expressions, we reduce the complexity of straightforward SC decoder to $O(m^{2}N\log N)$ when $m\leq 16$. Simulation results show that $16\times16$ kernel polar codes offer significant advantages in terms of error performances compared with $2\times2$ kernel polar codes under SC and list SC decoders.

Improved Soft Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

Mingyue You, Zhifeng Ma

The soft cancellation decoding of polar codes achieves a better performance than the belief propagation decoding with lower computational time and space complexities. However, because the soft cancellation decoding is based on the successive cancellation decoding, the decoding efficiency and performance with finite-length blocks can be further improved. Exploiting the idea of the successive cancellation list decoding, the soft cancellation decoding can be improved in two aspects: one is by adding branch decoding to the error-prone information bits to increase the accuracy of the soft information, and the other is through using partial iterative decoding to reduce the time and computational complexities. Compared with the original method, the improved soft cancellation decoding makes progress in the error correction performance, increasing the decoding efficiency and reducing the computational complexity, at the cost of a small increase of space complexity.

A method for efficiently successive cancellation (SC) decoding of polar codes with high-dimensional linear binary kernels (HDLBK) is presented and analyzed. We devise a lll-expressions method which can obtain simplified recursive formulas of SC decoder in likelihood ratio form for arbitrary linear binary kernels to reduce the complexity of corresponding SC decoder. By considering the bit-channel transition probabilities WG(⋅)(⋅∣0)W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|0)WG(⋅)(⋅∣0) and WG(⋅)(⋅∣1)W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|1)WG(⋅)(⋅∣1) separately, a WWW-expressions method is proposed to further reduce the complexity of HDLBK based SC decoder. For a m×mm\times mm×m binary kernel, the complexity of straightforward SC decoder is O(2mNlog⁡N)O(2^{m}N\log N)O(2mNlogN). With WWW-expressions, we reduce the complexity of straightforward SC decoder to O(m2Nlog⁡N)O(m^{2}N\log N)O(m2NlogN) when m≤16m\leq 16m≤16.
