Abstract

Decoherence with recurrences appear in the dynamics of the one-body density matrix of an F=1 spinor Bose–Einstein condensate, initially prepared in coherent states, in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field and within the single mode approximation. The phenomenon emerges as a many-body effect of the interplay of the quadratic Zeeman effect, which breaks the rotational symmetry, and the spin-spin interactions. By performing full quantum diagonalizations, a very accurate time evolution of large condensates is analyzed, leading to heuristic analytic expressions for the time dependence of the one-body density matrix, in the weak and strong interacting regimes, for initial coherent states. We are able to find accurate analytical expressions for both the decoherence and the recurrence times, in terms of the number of atoms and strength parameters, which show remarkable differences depending on the strength of the spin-spin interactions. The features of the stationary states in both regimes are also investigated. We discuss the nature of these limits in light of the thermodynamic limit.

Population and phase dynamics of F=1 spinor condensates in an external magnetic field

Dimas Rodrigues Romano, E. J. V. de Passos

We show that the classical dynamics underlying the mean-field description of homogeneous mixtures of spinor $F=1$ Bose-Einstein condensates in an external magnetic field is integrable as a consequence of number conservation and axial symmetry in spin space. The population dynamics depends only on the quadratic term of the Zeeman energy and on the strength of the spin-dependent term of the atom-atom interaction. We determine the equilibrium populations as function of the ratio of these two quantities and the miscibility of the hyperfine components in the ground state spinors are thoroughly discussed. Outside the equilibrium, the populations are always a periodic function of time where the periodic motion can be a libration or a rotation. Our studies also indicate the absence of metastability.

Evolution of a spinor condensate: Coherent dynamics, dephasing, and revivals

Jochen Kronjäger, C. Becker, M. Brinkmann +4 more

We present measurements and a theoretical model for the interplay of spin-dependent interactions and external magnetic fields in atomic spinor condensates. We highlight general features such as quadratic Zeeman dephasing and its influence on coherent spin mixing processes by focusing on a specific coherent superposition state in a $F=1$ $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we observe the transition from coherent spinor oscillations to the thermal equilibration.

Multi-second magnetic coherence in a single domain spinor Bose–Einstein condensate

Silvana Palacios, Simon Coop, Pau Gomez +4 more

We describe a compact, robust and versatile system for studying the macroscopic spin dynamics in a spinor Bose–Einstein condensate. Condensates of are produced by all-optical evaporation in a 1560 nm optical dipole trap, using a non-standard loading sequence that employs an ancillary 1529 nm beam for partial compensation of the strong differential light-shift induced by the dipole trap itself. We use near-resonant Faraday rotation probing to non-destructively track the condensate magnetization, and demonstrate few-Larmor-cycle tracking with no detectable degradation of the spin polarization. In the ferromagnetic F = 1 ground state, we observe the spin orientation between atoms in the condensate is preserved, such that they precess all together like one large spin in the presence of a magnetic field. We characterize this dynamics in terms of the single-shot magnetic coherence times and , and observe them to be of several seconds, limited only by the residence time of the atoms in the trap. At the densities used, this residence is restricted only by one-body losses set by the vacuum conditions.

Coherent Spin Dynamics of a Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensate

M.-S. Chang

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a phenomenon in which identical bosons occupy the same quantum state below a certain critical temperature. A hallmark of BEC is the coherence between particles every particle shares the same quantum wavefunction and phase. This coherence has been demonstrated for the external (motional) degrees of freedom of the atomic condensates by interfering two condensates. In this thesis, the coherence is shown to extend to the internal spin degrees of freedom of a spin-1 Bose gas evidenced by the observed coherent and reversible spin-changing collisions. The observed coherent dynamics are analogous to Josephson oscillations in weakly connected superconductors and represent a type of matter-wave four-wave mixing. Control of the coherent evolution of the system using magnetic fields is also demonstrated. The studies on spinor condensates begin by creating spinor condensates directly using all-optical approaches that were first developed in our laboratory. All-optical formation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in 1D optical lattice and single focus trap geometries are developed and presented. These techniques offer considerable flexibility and speed compared to magnetic trap approaches, and the trapping potential can be essentially spin-independent and are ideally suited for studying spinor condensates. Using condensates with well-defined initial non-equilibrium spin configuration, spin mixing of F = 1 and F = 2 spinor condensates of rubidium-87 atoms confined in an optical trap is observed. The equilibrium spin configuration in the F = 1 manifold confirms that 87Rb is ferromagnetic. The coherent spinor dynamics are demonstrated by initiating spin mixing deterministically with a non-stationary spin population configuration. Finally, the interplay between the coherent spin mixing and spatial dynamics in spin-1 condensates with ferromagnetic interactions is investigated.
