Quantum Control in the Unitary Sphere: Lambda-S1 and its Categorical Model

Abstract

In a recent paper, a realizability technique has been used to give a semantics of a quantum lambda calculus. Such a technique gives rise to an infinite number of valid typing rules, without giving preference to any subset of those. In this paper, we introduce a valid subset of typing rules, defining an expressive enough quantum calculus. Then, we propose a categorical semantics for it. Such a semantics consists of an adjunction between the category of distributive-action spaces of value distributions (that is, linear combinations of values in the lambda calculus), and the category of sets of value distributions.

In this paper we present a semantics for a linear algebraic lambda-calculus based on realizability. This semantics characterizes a notion of unitarity in the system, answering a long standing issue. We derive from the semantics a set of typing rules for a simply-typed linear algebraic lambda-calculus, and show how it extends both to classical and quantum lambda-calculi.

A Concrete Categorical Semantics of Lambda- S

Alejandro Díaz-Caro, Octavio Malherbe

Lambda- S is an extension to first-order lambda calculus unifying two approaches of non-cloning in quantum lambda-calculi. One is to forbid duplication of variables, while the other is to consider all lambda-terms as algebraic linear functions. The type system of Lambda- S have a constructor S such that a type A is considered as the base of a vector space while S ( A ) is its span. A first semantics of this calculus have been given when first presented, with such an interpretation: superposed types are interpreted as vectors spaces while non-superposed types as their basis. In this paper we give a concrete categorical semantics of Lambda- S , showing that S is interpreted as the composition of two functors in an adjunction relation between the category of sets and the category of vector spaces over C . The right adjoint is a forgetful functor U , which is hidden in the language, and plays a central role in the computational reasoning.

Higher-order semantics for quantum programming languages with classical control

George Philip Atzemoglou

This thesis studies the categorical formalisation of quantum computing, through the prism of type theory, in a three-tier process. The first stage of our investigation involves the creation of the dagger lambda calculus, a lambda calculus for dagger compact categories. Our second contribution lifts the expressive power of the dagger lambda calculus, to that of a quantum programming language, by adding classical control in the form of complementary classical structures and dualisers. Finally, our third contribution demonstrates how our lambda calculus can be applied to various well known problems in quantum computation: Quantum Key Distribution, the quantum Fourier transform, and the teleportation protocol./
