Abstract

We introduce a half-filled Hamiltonian of spin-half lattice fermions that can be studied with the efficient meron-cluster algorithm in any dimension. As with the usual bipartite half-filled Hubbard models, the na\"{\i}ve $U(2)$ symmetry is enhanced to $SO(4)$. On the other hand, our model has a novel spin-charge flip ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{C}$ symmetry which is an important ingredient of free massless fermions. In this work we focus on one spatial dimension and show that our model can be viewed as a lattice-regularized two-flavor chiral-mass Gross-Neveu model. Our model remains solvable in the presence of the Hubbard coupling $U$, which maps to a combination of Gross-Neveu and Thirring couplings in one dimension. Using the meron-cluster algorithm we find that the ground state of our model is a valence bond solid when $U=0$. From our field theory analysis, we argue that the valence bond solid forms inevitably because of an interesting frustration between spin and charge sectors in the renormalization group flow enforced by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{C}$ symmetry. This state spontaneously breaks translation symmetry by one lattice unit, which can be identified with a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ chiral symmetry in the continuum. We show that increasing $U$ induces a quantum phase transition to a critical phase described by the $SU(2{)}_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory. The quantum critical point between these two phases is known to exhibit a novel symmetry enhancement between spin and dimer. Here we verify the scaling relations of these correlation functions near the critical point numerically. Our study opens up the exciting possibility of numerical access to similar novel phase transitions in higher dimensions in fermionic lattice models using the meron-cluster algorithm.

Quantum Critical Phenomena in an $O(4)$ Fermion Chain

Hanqing Liu, Shailesh Chandrasekharan A, Ribhu K. Kaul

We construct a fermionic lattice model containing interacting spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions with an $O(4)$ symmetry. In addition the model contains a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ chiral symmetry which prevents a fermion mass term. Our model is motivated by the ability to study its physics using the meron-cluster algorithm. By adding a strong repulsive Hubbard interaction $U$, we can transform it into the regular Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet. While we can study our model in any dimension, as a first project we study it in one spatial dimension. We discover that our model at $U=0$ can be described as a lattice-regularized 2-flavor Gross-Neveu model, where fermions become massive since the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ chiral symmetry of the model is spontaneously broken. We show numerically that the theory remains massive when $U$ is small. At large values of $U$ the model is equivalent to the isotropic spin-half anti-ferromagnetic chain, which is massless for topological reasons. This implies that our model has a quantum phase transition from a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ broken massive phase to a topologically massless phase as we increase $U$. We present results obtained from our quantum Monte Carlo method near this phase transition.

A spin-charge flip symmetric fixed point in 2+1d with massless Dirac fermions

Hanqing Liu

We study a quantum phase transition of electrons on a two-dimensional square lattice. Our lattice model preserves the full $\mathrm{O}(4)$ symmetry of free spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Dirac fermions on a bipartite lattice. In particular, it not only preserves the usual $\mathrm{SO}(4)$ (spin-charge) symmetry like in the half-filling Hubbard model, but also preserves a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin-charge flip symmetry. Using sign-problem-free Monte Carlo simulation, we find a second order quantum phase transition from a massless Dirac phase to a massive phase with spontaneously chosen spin order or charge order, which become simultaneously critical at the critical point. We analyze all the possible 4-fermion couplings in the continuum respecting the lattice symmetry, and identify the terms whose effective potential in the broken phase is consistent with the numerical results. Using renormalization group calculations in the continuum, we show the existence of the new spin-charge flip symmetric fixed point and calculate its critical exponents.

Dirac fermions with plaquette interactions. I. SU(2) phase diagram with Gross-Neveu and deconfined quantum criticalities

Yuan Da Liao, Xiao Yan Xu, Zi Yang Meng +1 more

We investigate the ground state phase diagram of an extended Hubbard model with a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux hopping term at half filling on a square lattice, with unbiased large-scale auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. As a function of interaction strength, there emerges an intermediate phase which realizes two interaction-driven quantum critical points, with the first between the Dirac semimetal and an insulating phase of weak valence bond solid (VBS) order, and the second separating the VBS order and an antiferromagnetic insulating phase. These intriguing quantum critical points are respectively bestowed with Gross-Neveu and deconfined quantum criticalities, and the critical exponents ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\text{VBS}}=0.6(1)$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\text{AFM}}=0.58(3)$ at a deconfined quantum critical point satisfy the conformal field theory bootstrap bound. We also investigate the dynamical properties of the spin excitation and find the spin gap open near the first transition and closed at the second. The relevance of our findings in realizing deconfined quantum criticality in fermion systems and the implication to lattice models with further extended interactions such as those in quantum moir\'e systems, are discussed.

Critical exponents for a spin-charge flip symmetric fixed point in 2+1d with massless Dirac fermions

Emilie Huffman

In the Hamiltonian picture, free spin-$1/2$ Dirac fermions on a bipartite lattice have an $O(4)$ (spin-charge) symmetry. Here we construct an interacting lattice model with an interaction $V$, which is similar to the Hubbard interaction but preserves the spin-charge flip symmetry. By tuning the coupling $V$, we show that we can study the phase transition between the massless fermion phase at small-$V$ and a massive fermion phase at large-$V$. We construct a fermion bag algorithm to study this phase transition and find evidence for it to be second order. Numerical study shows that the universality class of the transition is different from the one studied earlier involving the Hubbard coupling $U$. Here we obtain some critical exponents using lattices up to $L=48$.

Quantum criticality in the metal-superconductor transition of interacting Dirac fermions on a triangular lattice

Yuichi Otsuka, Kazuhiro Seki, Sandro Sorella +1 more

We investigate a semimetal-superconductor phase transition of two-dimensional Dirac electrons at zero temperature by large-scale and essentially unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the half-filled attractive Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, in the presence of alternating magnetic $\ensuremath{\pi}$ flux, that is introduced to construct two Dirac points in the one-particle bands at the Fermi level. This phase transition is expected to describe quantum criticality of the chiral XY class in the framework of the Gross-Neveu model, where, in the ordered phase, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken and a mass gap opens in the excitation spectrum. We compute the order parameter of the $s$-wave superconductivity and estimate the quasiparticle weight from the long-distance behavior of the single-particle Green's function. These calculations allow us to obtain the critical exponents of this transition in a reliable and accurate way. Our estimate for the critical exponents is in good agreement with those obtained for a transition to a Kekul\'e valence bond solid, where an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry is proposed [Z.-X. Li et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 314 (2017)].

Valence Bond Orders at Charge Neutrality in a Possible Two-Orbital Extended Hubbard Model for Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Yuan Da Liao, Zi Yang Meng, Xiao Yan Xu

An extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice with two orbitals per site at charge neutrality is investigated with unbiased large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The Fermi velocity of the Dirac fermions is renormalized as the cluster charge interaction increases, until a mass term emerges and a quantum phase transition from Dirac semimetal to valence bond solid (VBS) insulator is established. The quantum critical point is discovered to belong to the 3D N=4 Gross-Neveu chiral XY universality with the critical exponents obtained at high precision. Further enhancement of the interaction drives the system into two different VBS phases, the properties and transition between them are also revealed. Since the model is related to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, our results may have relevance towards the symmetry breaking order at the charge neutrality point of the material, and associate the wide range of universal strange metal behavior around it with quantum critical fluctuations.
