Abstract

We investigate the ground state phase diagram of an extended Hubbard model with a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux hopping term at half filling on a square lattice, with unbiased large-scale auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. As a function of interaction strength, there emerges an intermediate phase which realizes two interaction-driven quantum critical points, with the first between the Dirac semimetal and an insulating phase of weak valence bond solid (VBS) order, and the second separating the VBS order and an antiferromagnetic insulating phase. These intriguing quantum critical points are respectively bestowed with Gross-Neveu and deconfined quantum criticalities, and the critical exponents ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\text{VBS}}=0.6(1)$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\text{AFM}}=0.58(3)$ at a deconfined quantum critical point satisfy the conformal field theory bootstrap bound. We also investigate the dynamical properties of the spin excitation and find the spin gap open near the first transition and closed at the second. The relevance of our findings in realizing deconfined quantum criticality in fermion systems and the implication to lattice models with further extended interactions such as those in quantum moir\'e systems, are discussed.

Dirac fermions with plaquette interactions. III. SU(N) phase diagram with Gross-Neveu criticality and first-order phase transition

Yuan Da Liao, Xiao Yan Xu, Zi Yang Meng +1 more

Inspired by our recent works on SU(2) and SU(4) Dirac fermions subjected to plaquette interactions on square lattice, here we extend the large-scale quantum Monte Carlo investigations to the phase diagram of correlated Dirac fermions with SU(6) and SU(8) symmetries subjected to the plaquette interaction on the same lattice. From SU(2) to SU(8), the rich phase diagram exhibits a plethora of emerging quantum phases, such as Dirac semimetals, antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, valence bond solids (VBSs), and Dirac spin liquid and phase transitions, including Gross-Neveu chiral transitions with emergent continuous symmetry, deconfined quantum criticality, and the first-order transition between an interaction-driven columnar VBS and a plaquette VBS. These rich phenomena coming from simple-looking lattice models firmly convey the message that the interplay between the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Dirac fermions (with enhanced internal symmetries) and extended plaquette interactions (beyond the on-site Hubbard type) is the new playground to synthesize novel highly entangled quantum matter both at the model level and with experimental feasibilities.

Dirac fermions with plaquette interactions. II. SU(4) phase diagram with Gross-Neveu criticality and quantum spin liquid

Yuan Da Liao, Xiao Yan Xu, Zi Yang Meng +1 more

At sufficiently low temperatures, interacting electron systems tend to develop orders. Exceptions are quantum critical point (QCP) and quantum spin liquid (QSL), where fluctuations prevent the highly entangled quantum matter to an ordered state down to the lowest temperature. While the ramification of these states may have appeared in high-temperature superconductors, ultracold atoms, frustrated magnets, and quantum moir\'e materials, their unbiased presence remains elusive in microscopic two-dimensional lattice models. Here, we show, by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations of correlated electrons on the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux square lattice subjected to plaquette Hubbard interaction, that a Gross-Neveu QCP separating massless Dirac fermions and a columnar valence bond solid at finite interaction and a possible Dirac QSL at the infinite yet tractable interaction limit emerge in a coherent sequence. These unexpected quantum states reside in this simple-looking model, unifying ingredients including emergent symmetry, deconfined fractionalization, and the dynamic coupling between emergent matter and gauge fields and will have profound implications both in quantum many-body theory and understanding of the aforementioned experimental systems.

Metallic and Deconfined Quantum Criticality in Dirac Systems

Zi Hong Liu, Matthias Vojta C, Fakher F. Assaad +1 more

Motivated by the physics of spin-orbital liquids, we study a model of interacting Dirac fermions on a bilayer honeycomb lattice at half filling, featuring an explicit global SO(3)×U(1) symmetry. Using large-scale auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we locate two zero-temperature phase transitions as function of increasing interaction strength. First, we observe a continuous transition from the weakly interacting semimetal to a different semimetallic phase in which the SO(3) symmetry is spontaneously broken and where two out of three Dirac cones acquire a mass gap. The associated quantum critical point can be understood in terms of a Gross-Neveu-SO(3) theory. Second, we subsequently observe a transition toward an insulating phase in which the SO(3) symmetry is restored and the U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken. While strongly first order at the mean-field level, the QMC data are consistent with a direct and continuous transition. It is thus a candidate for a new type of deconfined quantum critical point that features gapless fermionic degrees of freedom.

Quantum criticality in the metal-superconductor transition of interacting Dirac fermions on a triangular lattice

Yuichi Otsuka, Kazuhiro Seki, Sandro Sorella +1 more

We investigate a semimetal-superconductor phase transition of two-dimensional Dirac electrons at zero temperature by large-scale and essentially unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the half-filled attractive Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, in the presence of alternating magnetic $\ensuremath{\pi}$ flux, that is introduced to construct two Dirac points in the one-particle bands at the Fermi level. This phase transition is expected to describe quantum criticality of the chiral XY class in the framework of the Gross-Neveu model, where, in the ordered phase, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken and a mass gap opens in the excitation spectrum. We compute the order parameter of the $s$-wave superconductivity and estimate the quasiparticle weight from the long-distance behavior of the single-particle Green's function. These calculations allow us to obtain the critical exponents of this transition in a reliable and accurate way. Our estimate for the critical exponents is in good agreement with those obtained for a transition to a Kekul\'e valence bond solid, where an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry is proposed [Z.-X. Li et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 314 (2017)].

Critical behavior of the QED3 -Gross-Neveu model: Duality and deconfined criticality

Lukas Janssen, Yin-Chen He

We study the critical properties of the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$-Gross-Neveu model with $2N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions coupled to a massless scalar field and a U(1) gauge field. For $N=1$, this theory has recently been suggested to be dual to the SU(2) noncompact ${\mathrm{CP}}^{1}$ model that describes the deconfined phase transition between the N\'eel antiferromagnet and the valence bond solid on the square lattice. For $N=2$, the theory has been proposed as an effective description of a deconfined critical point between chiral and Dirac spin liquid phases, and may potentially be realizable in spin-$1/2$ systems on the kagome lattice. We demonstrate the existence of a stable quantum critical point in the ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$-Gross-Neveu model for all values of $N$. This quantum critical point is shown to escape the notorious fixed-point annihilation mechanism that renders plain ${\mathrm{QED}}_{3}$ (without scalar-field coupling) unstable at low values of $N$. The theory exhibits an upper critical space-time dimension of four, enabling us to access the critical behavior in a controlled expansion in the small parameter $\ensuremath{\epsilon}=4\ensuremath{-}D$. We compute the scalar-field anomalous dimension ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\phi}}$, the correlation-length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$, as well as the scaling dimension of the flavor-symmetry-breaking bilinear $\overline{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{z}\ensuremath{\psi}$ at the critical point, and compare our leading-order estimates with predictions of the conjectured duality.
