Abstract

We discuss the ground-state degeneracy of spin-$1/2$ kagome-lattice quantum antiferromagnets on magnetization plateaus by employing two complementary methods: the adiabatic flux insertion in closed boundary conditions and a 't Hooft anomaly argument on inherent symmetries in a quasi-one-dimensional limit. The flux insertion with a tilted boundary condition restricts the lower bound of the ground-state degeneracy on $1/9$, $1/3$, $5/9$, and $7/9$ magnetization plateaus under the $\mathrm{U(1)}$ spin-rotation and the translation symmetries: $3$, $1$, $3$, and $3$, respectively. This result motivates us further to develop an anomaly interpretation of the $1/3$ plateau. Taking advantage of the insensitivity of anomalies to spatial anisotropies, we examine the existence of the unique gapped ground state on the $1/3$ plateau from a quasi-one-dimensional viewpoint. In the quasi-one-dimensional limit, kagome antiferromagnets are reduced to weakly coupled three-leg spin tubes. Here, we point out the following anomaly description of the $1/3$ plateau. While a simple $S=1/2$ three-leg spin tube cannot have the unique gapped ground state on the $1/3$ plateau because of an anomaly between a $\mathbb Z_3\times \mathbb Z_3$ symmetry and the translation symmetry at the $1/3$ filling, the kagome antiferromagnet breaks explicitly one of the $\mathbb Z_3$ symmetries related to a $\mathbb Z_3$ cyclic transformation of spins in the unit cell. Hence the kagome antiferromagnet can have the unique gapped ground state on the $1/3$ plateau.

Magnetization plateaus in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain

Katsuhiro Morita, Takanori Sugimoto, Shigetoshi Sota +1 more

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice is a typical frustrated quantum spin system. The basic structure of a kagome lattice is also present in the kagome-strip lattice in one dimension, where a similar type of frustration is expected. We thus study the magnetization plateaus of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain with three-independent antiferromagnetic exchange interactions using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. In a certain range of exchange parameters, we find twelve kinds of magnetization plateaus, nine of which have magnetic structures breaking translational and/or reflection symmetry spontaneously. The structures are classified by an array of five-site unit cells with specific bond-spin correlations. In a case with a nontrivial plateau, namely a 3/10 plateau, we find long-period magnetic structure with a period of four unit cells.

Theory of the $1/9$ Magnetization Plateau of the Spin-$1/2$ Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Pratyay Ghosh, Frédéric Mila

We investigate the $1/9$ magnetization plateau of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet using infinite projected entangled-pair states and identify a spin-density-wave state with a $27$-site unit cell and a lower variational energy than previous approaches. In contrast to higher-magnetization plateaus, which are well described by localized magnons on nonoverlapping hexagons and preserve a sixfold rotational symmetry, the $1/9$ plateau only keeps a threefold rotational symmmetry and consists of a tiling by three types of $9$-site clusters related by $\pm2π/3$ rotations. These conclusions are supported by a complementary cluster mean-field theory which correctly preserves the symmetry of the higher plateaus but leads to the same spontaneous symmetry breaking for the $1/9$ plateau with a qualitatively similar pattern of nine different local magnetizations.

Magnetic Phase Diagrams and Magnetization Plateaus of the Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on a Square-Kagome Lattice with Three Nonequivalent Exchange Interactions

Katsuhiro Morita, Takami Tohyama

Magnetization plateaus in quantum spin systems emerges in two-dimensional frustrated systems such as kagome lattice. The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice is also appropriate for the study of magnetization plateau. Motivated by recent experimental finding of such a square-kagome lattice with nonequivalent three bonds, we investigate the phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the lattice by the exact diagonalization method. In addition to previously reported the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus in the model with two equivalent bonds, we find a new 2/3 plateau whose magnetic structure is characterized by spontaneously broken four-fold rotational symmetry. The plateau appears only in the case of three nonequivalent bonds. We propose the possibility of finding plateaus including the new one.

Translation constraints on quantum phases with twisted boundary conditions

Shunsuke C. Furuya, Yusuke Horinouchi

Bulk properties of quantum phases should be independent of a specific choice of boundary conditions as long as the boundary respects the symmetries. Based on this physically reasonable requirement, we discuss the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type ingappability in two-dimensional quantum magnets under a boundary condition that makes evident a quantum anomaly underlying the lattice system. In particular, we direct our attention to those on the checkerboard lattice, which are closely related to frustrated quantum magnets on the square lattice and on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. Our discussion is focused on the adiabatic U(1) flux insertion through a closed path in a boundary condition twisted by a spatial rotation and a reflection. Two-dimensional systems in this boundary condition are effectively put on a nonorientable space, namely the Klein bottle. We show that the translation symmetry on the Klein-bottle space excludes the possibility of the unique and gapped ground state. Taking advantage of the flux insertion argument, we also discuss the ground-state degeneracy on magnetization plateaus of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the checkerboard lattice.

Chern-Simons theory of magnetization plateaus on the kagome lattice

Ponnuraj Krishnakumar

Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of experimental materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In this thesis I will focus on studying frustrated spin systems on the Kagome lattice using a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model in the presence of an external magnetic field as well as other perturbations. Such a system is expected to give rise to magnetization platueaus which can exhibit topological characteristics in certain regimes. We will first develop a flux-attachment transformation that maps the Heisenberg spins (hard-core bosons) onto a problem of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. This mapping relies on being able to define a consistent Chern-Simons term on the lattice. Using this newly developed mapping we analyse the phases/magnetization plateaus that arise at the mean-field level and also consider the effects of adding fluctuations to various mean-fi eld states. Along the way, we show how to discretize an abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory on generic 2D planar lattices that satisfy certain conditions. We find that as long as there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the vertices and plaquettes defined on the graph, one can write down a discretized lattice version of the abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory. Using the newly developed flux attachment transformation, we show the existence of chiral spin liquid states for various magnetization plateaus for certain range of parameters in the XXZ Heisenberg model in the presence of an external magnetic field. Speci cally, in the regime of XY anisotropy the ground states at the 1/3 and 2/3 plateau are equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state with filling fraction 1/2 and that the 5/9 plateau is equivalent to the first bosonic Jain daughter state at filling fraction 2/3. Next, we also consider the effects of several perturbations: a) a chirality term, b) a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term, and c) a ring-exchange type term on the bowties of the kagome lattice, and inquire if they can also support chiral spin liquids as ground states. We find that the chirality term leads to a chiral spin liquid even in the absence of an uniform magnetic field, with an effective spin Hall conductance of 1/2 in the regime of XY anisotropy. The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya term also leads a similar chiral spin liquid but only when this term is not too strong. An external magnetic field when combined with some of the above perturbations also has the possibility of giving rise to additional plateaus which also behave like chiral spin liquids in the XY regime. Under the in influence of a ring-exchange term we find that provided its coupling constant is large enough, it may trigger a phase transition into a chiral spin liquid by the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal invariance. Finally, we also present some numerical results based on some exact diagonalization studies. Here, we specifically focus on the 2/3-magnetization plateau which we previously argued should be a chiral spin liquid with a spin hall conductance of 1/2 . Such a topological state has a non-trivial ground state degeneracy and it excitations are described by semionic quasiparticles. In the numerical analysis, we analyse the ground state degeneracy structure on various Kagome clusters of different sizes. We compute modular matrices from the resultant minimally entangled states as well as the Chern numbers of various eigenstates all of which provide strong evidence that the 2/3-magnetization plateau very closely resembles a chiral spin liquid state with the expected characteristics.

Variational study of the magnetization plateaus in the spin- 1 2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet: An approach from vision transformer neural quantum states

Andreas Raikos, Sylvain Capponi, Fabien Alet

We analyze the magnetization curve of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg model in a magnetic field. Using state-of-the-art variational wave functions based on neural networks, we confirm the presence of robust magnetization plateaus at $m=1/3$, $5/9$ and $7/9$ of the saturation value, stabilized by a spontaneous symmetry breaking of lattice translations with a $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ unit cell. Regarding the more challenging $m=1/9$ plateau, we find two competing valence bond crystals depending on the system size, both breaking translation as well as point group symmetries and with a larger $3\times 3$ unit cell. Such quantum states with local modulations of the magnetization average values could be observed experimentally in the near future.
