Illustration of quantum complementarity using single photons interfering on a grating

V. Jacques, Ngoc Diep Lai, A. Dréau +5 more

A recent experiment performed by Afshar et al (2007 Found. Phys. 37 295–305) has been interpreted as a violation of Bohr's complementarity principle between interference visibility and which-path information (WPI) in a two-path interferometer. We have reproduced this experiment, using true single-photon pulses propagating in a two-path wavefront-splitting interferometer realized with a Fresnel's biprism, and followed by a grating with adjustable transmitting slits. The measured values of interference visibility V and WPI, characterized by the distinguishability parameter D , are found to obey the complementarity relation V 2 + D 2 ⩽1. This result demonstrates that the experiment can be perfectly explained by the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Conversion of transverse momentum correlation of photon pairs into polarization entanglement by using wavefront-splitting interference

Csaba Tamás Holló, Tamás Sarkadi, Máté Galambos +4 more

The transverse momentum correlation of photon pairs generated by noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion with type-I phase matching is transformed into polarization entanglement. A robust wavefront-splitting interferometer scheme is used, due to which the phase of the entangled state does not require active stabilization. Frequency-degenerate signal and idler photons are separated and coupled into single-mode optical fibers. The concept is demonstrated in a compact and modular setup. A straightforward alignment process for producing any of the Bell states is presented. The entangled source has an output photon flux of $8.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.27$ kcps/mW normalized to pump power (150 mW), and $17\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3%$ heralding ratio. The measured state fidelity with respect to the negative anticorrelated Bell state is $0.951\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.004$.

Wavefront division quantum interferometry

Mahdi Eshaghi, Ruitao Wu, Erwan Baleine +1 more

We investigate the use of a spatially distributed beam of entangled photons for applications of wavefront division interferometry. Using a fiber-based spontaneous parametric down conversion process, which redirect the signal and idler into a common single-mode fiber, we generate a Gaussian beam of colinear entangled photons randomly distributed in space. Coincidence measurements carried by wavefront division demonstrate quantum interference patterns, including classical single photon fringes, two-photon interferences and the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Our results are relevant for detecting transverse variations in the statistical properties of weak turbulence.
