Quantum spatial dynamics of high-gain parametric down-conversion accompanied by cascaded up-conversion

Abstract

Quantum cascaded up-conversion (CUpC) of parametric down conversion (PDC) in a finite nonlinear ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ crystal is studied theoretically within parametric approximation. The exact solution for creation and annihilation operators presented in the form of Bogoliubov transformation is valid for the high-gain regime and explicitly includes the nonzero wave-vector mismatch both for PDC and CUpC. Characteristic equation is used to analyze parametric amplification and oscillating regimes for degenerate, three- and four-mode cases. We show that the parametric amplification exists under the fulfillment of the cascaded phase-matching conditions while both the PDC and CUpC processes are separately non-phase-matched. The influence of CUpC on quadrature squeezing of degenerate PDC is estimated.

Squeezed light generation via frequency degenerate parametric down-conversion with cascaded up-conversion

Д. А. Копылов, Andrei Rasputnyi

We present the results of the analytical and numerical analysis of the generation of squeezed states via frequency-degenerate PDC with CUpC. We demonstrate the dynamics of the quadrature squeezing of the PDC and CUpC modes inside the nonlinear crystal. With the use of Reid criterion we show the conditions, when PDC and CUpC modes are entangled or separable.

Cascaded frequency up-conversion of bright squeezed vacuum: spectral and correlation properties

Andrei Rasputnyi, Denis A. Kopylov, T. V. Murzina +1 more

High-gain parametric down-conversion (PDC) is inevitably accompanied by cascaded up-conversion (CUpC) of PDC radiation in a nonlinear crystal even if CUpC is nonphase matched. Here we study experimentally and theoretically the spectral properties of broadband phase-matched and nonphase-matched CUpC radiation in a beta barium borate (BBO) crystal. Our calculations of the normalized second-order correlation function predict the super-bunching of CUpC radiation.

Single-cycle squeezing from chirped quasi-phase-matched optical parametric down-conversion

D. B. Horoshko, Mikhail I. Kolobov

Parametric down-conversion of light (PDC) in a quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear crystal can be spectrally very broad when the spatial frequency of periodical poling is linearly chirped. The present day technology makes possible the fabrication of chirped QPM crystals phase-matched for PDC in all optical spectrum. In the low-gain regime this allows for generation of biphotons with the correlation time of the order of a single optical cycle. A natural next step is the study of the PDC light produced by such a crystal in the high-gain regime, where PDC is widely used as a source of squeezed states of light. Up to now only a classical treatment of this regime was undertaken. In the present work we demonstrate a possibility to generate single-cycle squeezing in a chirped QPM nonlinear crystal with squeezing spectrum covering almost all the optical octave.

Theory of quantum frequency conversion and type-II parametric down-conversion in the high-gain regime

Christ, A., Brecht, B., Mauerer, W. +1 more

Frequency conversion (FC) and type-II parametric down-conversion (PDC) processes serve as basic building blocks for the implementation of quantum optical experiments: type-II PDC enables the efficient creation of quantum states such as photon-number states and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR)-states. FC gives rise to technologies enabling efficient atom-photon coupling, ultrafast pulse gates and enhanced detection schemes. However, despite their widespread deployment, their theoretical treatment remains challenging. Especially the multi-photon components in the high-gain regime as well as the explicit time-dependence of the involved Hamiltonians hamper an efficient theoretical description of these nonlinear optical processes. In this paper, we investigate these effects and put forward two models that enable a full description of FC and type-II PDC in the high-gain regime. We present a rigorous numerical model relying on the solution of coupled integro-differential equations that covers the complete dynamics of the process. As an alternative, we develop a simplified model that, at the expense of neglecting time-ordering effects, enables an analytical solution. While the simplified model approximates the correct solution with high fidelity in a broad parameter range, sufficient for many experimental situations, such as FC with low efficiency, entangled photon-pair generation and the heralding of single photons from type-II PDC, our investigations reveal that the rigorous model predicts a decreased performance for FC processes in quantum pulse gate applications and an enhanced EPR-state generation rate during type-II PDC, when EPR squeezing values above 12 dB are considered.

Gain-induced spectral non-degeneracy in type-II parametric down-conversion

Behnood Taheri, Denis Kopylov, Manfred Hammer +3 more

We demonstrate the novel effect of gain-induced spectral shifts in the type-II parametric down-conversion (PDC) process, which results in a transition from degenerate to non-degenerate PDC with increasing parametric gain. This effect, originating from the second-order dispersion terms, significantly alters the properties of PDC in the high-gain regime, where it leads to increased distinguishability of the generated photon pairs. The effect is established by evaluating a rigorous theoretical model, which is based on solving a system of coupled integro-differential equations for monochromatic operators. The widely used spatially-averaged approximate model fails to reproduce this important effect.
