Perturbation Analysis of Quantum Reset Models

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the analysis of Lindblad operators of Quantum Reset Models, describing the effective dynamics of tri-partite quantum systems subject to stochastic resets. We consider a chain of three independent subsystems, coupled by a Hamiltonian term. The two subsystems at each end of the chain are driven, independently from each other, by a reset Lindbladian, while the center system is driven by a Hamiltonian. Under generic assumptions on the coupling term, we prove the existence of a unique steady state for the perturbed reset Lindbladian, analytic in the coupling constant. We further analyze the large times dynamics of the corresponding CPTP Markov semigroup that describes the approach to the steady state. We illustrate these results with concrete examples corresponding to realistic open quantum systems.

Entropy production of quantum reset models

Géraldine Haack, Alain Joye

We analyze the entropy production of Quantum Reset Models (QRMs) corresponding to quantum dynamical semigroups driven by Lindbladians motivated by a probabilistic description of dissipation in an external environment. We investigate the strict positivity of entropy production for Lindbladians given as sums of QRMs, when the Hamiltonian of the total Lindbladian is split as an affine combination of Hamiltonians of the individual QRMs. In this setup, we derive conditions on the coefficients of the combination and on the reset states ensuring either positive or zero entropy production. Second, we deal with a tri-partite system subject at its ends to two independent QRMs and a weak coupling Hamiltonian. The latter is split as an affine combination of individual Hamiltonians, and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring strict positivity of the entropy production to leading order, with the possible exception of one affine combination. We apply these results to a physically motivated model and exhibit explicit expressions for the leading orders steady-state solution, entropy production and entropy fluxes. Moreover, these approximations are numerically shown to hold beyond the expected regimes.

Thermodynamics of quantum-jump trajectories of open quantum systems subject to stochastic resetting

Gabriele Perfetto, Carollo, Federico, Lesanovsky, Igor

We consider Markovian open quantum systems subject to stochastic resetting, which means that the dissipative time evolution is reset at randomly distributed times to the initial state. We show that the ensuing dynamics is non-Markovian and has the form of a generalized Lindblad equation. Interestingly, the statistics of quantum-jumps can be exactly derived. This is achieved by combining techniques from the thermodynamics of quantum-jump trajectories with the renewal structure of the resetting dynamics. We consider as an application of our analysis a driven two-level and an intermittent three-level system. Our findings show that stochastic resetting may be exploited as a tool to tailor the statistics of the quantum-jump trajectories and the dynamical phases of open quantum systems.

Metastability, resets and large deviations in open quantum systems

D. C. Rose

In this thesis we apply, and build upon, a comprehensive theory of metastability in open quantum systems. We gain a full understanding of the long time states and the dynamics between them in a 1D open quantum Ising model, and a glassy, dissipative quantum East model: in order to do this, we develop algorithmic approaches to conducting such analyses in generic models exhibiting a metastability which can be considered classical. In addition, we provide an extensive discussion of the use of symmetries in the numerical study of open quantum systems, containing results of substantial use throughout this work. We finish with a general set of results about the spectra of operators describing the evolution of classical or quantum models undergoing stochastic resetting, allowing a precise analysis of the effect of resets on metastability in the 1D open quantum Ising model.

Quantum dynamics with stochastic reset

Bhaskar Mukherjee, K. Sengupta, Satya N. Majumdar

We study nonequilibrium dynamics of integrable and nonintegrable closed quantum systems whose unitary evolution is interrupted with stochastic resets, characterized by a reset rate $r$, that project the system to its initial state. We show that the steady-state density matrix of a nonintegrable system, averaged over the reset distribution, retains its off-diagonal elements for any finite $r$. Consequently a generic observable $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{O}$, whose expectation value receives a contribution from these off-diagonal elements, never thermalizes under such dynamics for any finite $r$. We demonstrate this phenomenon by exact numerical studies of experimentally realizable models of ultracold bosonic atoms in a tilted optical lattice. For integrable Dirac-like fermionic models driven periodically between such resets, the reset-averaged steady state is found to be described by a family of generalized Gibbs ensembles characterized by $r$. We also study the spread of particle density of a noninteracting one-dimensional fermionic chain, starting from an initial state where all fermions occupy the left half of the sample, while the right half is empty. When driven by resetting dynamics, the density profile approaches at long times to a nonequilibrium stationary profile that we compute exactly. We suggest concrete experiments that can possibly test our theory.

Dynamics of closed quantum systems under stochastic resetting

Francisco J. Sevilla, Andrea Valdés-Hernández

Abstract We consider a closed quantum system subject to a stochastic resetting process. The generic expression for the resulting density operator is formulated for arbitrary resetting dynamics, fully characterised by the distribution of times between consecutive reset events. We analyse the behaviour of the state in the long-time regime, as well as the evolution of relevant quantities in the study of quantum coherence and closed- versus open-system dynamics. Our general results are complemented with examples involving particular resetting distributions, and special attention is paid to the two-level (qubit) system, in which we elucidate the effects of the renewal process on the speed of evolution toward an orthogonal state, and gain insight into the resetting applied to open systems.
