Tunneling through an eternal traversable wormhole

Abstract

The Maldacena-Qi model describes two copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model coupled with an additional coupling and is dual to the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, which exhibits an eternal traversable wormhole in the low-temperature limit. In this work, we study an experimental consequence of the existence of the traversable wormhole by considering the tunneling spectroscopy for the Maldacena-Qi model. Making comparisons to the high-temperature black-hole phase where the bulk geometry is disconnected, we find that both the tunneling probability and the differential conductance in the low-temperature wormhole phase show nontrivial oscillation, which directly provides an unambiguous signature of the underlying $SL(2)$ symmetry of the bulk geometry. We also perform bulk calculations in both high- and low-temperature phases, which match the results from the boundary quantum theory.

Quantum chaos transition in a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model dual to an eternal traversable wormhole

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Tomoki Nosaka, Dario Rosa +1 more

It has been recently proposed by Maldacena and Qi that an eternal traversable wormhole in a two-dimensional anti--de Sitter space is the gravity dual of the low temperature limit of two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models coupled by a relevant interaction (which we will refer to as spin operator). We study spectral and eigenstate properties of this coupled SYK model. We find that level statistics in the tail of the spectrum, and for a sufficiently weak coupling, show substantial deviations from random matrix theory, which suggests that traversable wormholes are not quantum chaotic. By contrast, for sufficiently strong coupling, corresponding to the black hole phase, level statistics are well described by random matrix theory. This transition in level statistics coincides approximately with a previously reported Hawking-Page transition for weak coupling. We show explicitly that this thermodynamic transition turns into a sharp crossover as the coupling increases. Likewise, this critical coupling also corresponds to the one at which the overlap between the ground state and the thermofield double state (TFD) is smallest. In the range of sizes we can reach by exact diagonalization, the ground state is well approximated by the TFD only in the strong coupling limit. This is due to the fact that the ground state is close to the eigenstate of the spin operator corresponding to the lowest eigenvalue which is an exact TFD at infinite temperature. In this region, the spectral density is separated into blobs centered around the eigenvalues of the spin operator. For weaker couplings, the exponential decay of coefficients in a tensor product basis, typical of the TFD, becomes power law. Finally, we also find that the total Hamiltonian has an additional discrete symmetry which has not been reported previously.

Euclidean wormhole in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, Victor Godet

We study a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with complex couplings, and identify a low temperature transition to a gapped phase characterized by a constant in temperature free energy. This transition is observed without introducing a coupling between the two sites, and only appears after ensemble average over the complex couplings. We propose a gravity interpretation of these results by constructing an explicit solution of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with matter: a two-dimensional Euclidean wormhole whose geometry is the double trumpet. This solution is sustained by imaginary sources for a marginal operator, without the need of a coupling between the two boundaries. As the temperature is decreased, there is a transition from a disconnected phase with two black holes to the connected wormhole phase, in qualitative agreement with the SYK observation. The expectation value of the marginal operator is an order parameter for this transition. This illustrates in a concrete setup how a Euclidean wormhole can arise from an average over field theory couplings.

Traversable wormhole and Hawking-Page transition in coupled complex SYK models

Sharmistha Sahoo, Étienne Lantagne-Hurtubise, Stephan Plugge +1 more

Recent work has shown that coupling two identical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models can realize a phase of matter that is holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole. This phase supports revival oscillations between two quantum chaotic systems that can be interpreted as information traversing the wormhole. Here we generalize these ideas to a pair of coupled SYK models with complex fermions that respect a global U(1) charge symmetry.Such models show richer behavior than conventional SYK models with Majorana fermions and may be easier to realize experimentally. We consider two different couplings, namely, tunneling and charge-conserving two-body interactions, and obtain the corresponding phase diagram using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. At low temperature, we find a charge-neutral gapped phase that supports revival oscillations, with a ground state close to the thermofield double, which we argue is dual to a traversable wormhole. We also find two different gapless non-Fermi liquid phases with tunable charge density which we interpret as dual to a "large" and "small" charged black hole. The gapped and gapless phases are separated by a first-order phase transition of the Hawking-Page type. Finally, we discuss an SU(2)-symmetric limit of our model that is closely related to proposed realizations of SYK physics with spinful fermions in graphene, and explain its relevance for future experiments on this system.

The coupled SYK model at finite temperature

Xiao-Liang Qi

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes N randomly interacting Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimension, is found to be an solvable UV-complete toy model for holographic duality in nearly AdS2 dilaton gravity. Ref. [1] proposed a modified model by coupling two identical SYK models, which at low-energy limit is dual to a global AdS2 geometry. This geometry is an “eternal wormhole" because the two boundaries are causally connected. Increasing the temperature drives a Hawking-Page like transition from the eternal wormhole geometry to two disconnected black holes with coupled matter field. To gain more understanding of the coupled SYK model, in this work, we study the finite temperature spectral function of this system by numerical solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in real-time. We find in the low-temperature phase the system is well described by weakly interacting fermions with renormalized single-particle gap, while in the high temperature phase the system is strongly interacting and the single-particle peaks merge. We also study the q dependence of the spectral function.

Measurement-induced phase transition in teleportation and wormholes

Alexey Milekhin, Fedor K. Popov

We demonstrate that some quantum teleportation protocols exhibit measurement induced phase transitions in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. Namely, Kitaev-Yoshida and Gao-Jafferis-Wall protocols have a phase transition if we apply them at a large projection rate or at a large coupling rate respectively. It is well-known that at small rates they allow teleportation to happen only within a small time-window. We show that at large rates, the system goes into a new steady state, where the teleportation can be performed at any moment. In dual Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity these phase transitions correspond to the formation of an eternal traversable wormhole. In the Kitaev-Yoshida case this novel type of wormhole is supported by continuous projections.
