Abstract

A product code with single parity-check component codes can be described via the tools of a multi-kernel polar code, where the rows of the generator matrix are chosen according to the constraints imposed by the product code construction. Following this observation, successive cancellation decoding of such codes is introduced. In particular, the error probability of single parity-check product codes over binary memoryless symmetric channels under successive cancellation decoding is characterized. A bridge with the analysis of product codes introduced by Elias is also established for the binary erasure channel. Successive cancellation list decoding of single parity-check product codes is then described. For the provided example, simulations over the binary input additive white Gaussian channel show that successive cancellation list decoding outperforms belief propagation decoding applied to the code graph. Finally, the performance of the concatenation of a product code with a high-rate outer code is investigated via distance spectrum analysis. Examples of concatenations performing within 0.7 dB from the random coding union bound are provided.

A product code with single parity-check component codes can be seen as a special instance of a multi-kernel polar code, where the rows of the generator matrix are chosen according to the constraints imposed by the product code construction. Following this observation, successive cancellation decoding of such codes is introduced. In particular, the error probability of single parity-check product codes over the binary erasure channel under successive cancellation decoding is characterized. A bridge with the analysis of product codes introduced by Elias is also established. Successive cancellation list decoding of single parity-check product codes is then described. For the provided example, it is shown that successive cancellation list decoding outperforms belief propagation decoding performed on the code graph over the binary input additive white Gaussian channel. Finally, the performance of the concatenation of a product code with a high-rate outer code is investigated via distance spectrum analysis.

Successive cancellation decoding of single parity-check product codes

Mustafa Cemil Coşkun, Gianluigi Liva, Alexandre Graell i Amat +1 more

We introduce successive cancellation (SC) decoding of product codes (PCs) with single parity-check (SPC) component codes. Recursive formulas are derived, which resemble the SC decoding algorithm of polar codes. We analyze the error probability of SPC-PCs over the binary erasure channel under SC decoding. A bridge with the analysis of PCs introduced by Elias in 1954 is also established. Furthermore, bounds on the block error probability under SC decoding are provided, and compared to the bounds under the original decoding algorithm proposed by Elias. It is shown that SC decoding of SPC-PCs achieves a lower block error probability than Elias' decoding.

Bounds on the List Size of Successive Cancellation List Decoding

Mustafa Cemil Coşkun, Henry D. Pfister

Successive cancellation list decoding of polar codes provides very good performance for short to moderate block lengths. However, the list size required to approach the performance of maximum-likelihood decoding is still not well understood theoretically. This work identifies information-theoretic quantities that are closely related to this required list size. It also provides a natural approximation for these quantities that can be computed efficiently even for very long codes. Simulation results are provided for the binary erasure channel as well as the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel.

Successive Cancellation Decoding With Future Constraints for Polar Codes Over the Binary Erasure Channel

Min Jang, Jong-Hwan Kim, Seho Myung +1 more

In the conventional successive cancellation (SC) decoder for polar codes, all the future bits to be estimated later are treated as random variables. However, polar codes inevitably involve frozen bits, and their concatenated coding schemes also include parity bits (or dynamic frozen bits) causally generated from the past bits estimated earlier. We refer to the frozen and parity bits located behind a target decoding bit as its future constraints (FCs). Although the values of FCs are deterministic given the past estimates, they have not been exploited in the conventional SC-based decoders, not leading to optimality. In this paper, with a primary focus on the binary erasure channel (BEC), we propose SC-check (SCC) and belief propagation SCC (BP-SCC) decoding algorithms in order to leverage FCs in decoding. We further devise an improved tree search technique based on stack-based backjumping (SBJ) to solve dynamic constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) formulated by FCs. Over the BEC, numerical results show that a combination of the BP-SCC algorithm and the SBJ tree search technique achieves the erasure recovery performance close to the dependence testing (DT) bound, a bound of achievable finite-length performance.

Efficient stochastic list successive cancellation decoder for polar codes

Xiao Liang, Chuan Zhang, Menghui Xu +2 more

Representing continuous values by streams of random binary bits, stochastic decoding has shown advantages in both hardware efficiency and fault tolerance, therefore has been widely adopted by iterative decoding of error correction codes such as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and so on. Recently, polar codes, the first codes that can provably achieve the capacity of symmetric binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMCs), have drawn a lot of attentions from both academia and industry. Although, polar codes with list successive cancellation (SC) decoding can outperform several best-known LDPC codes even within high error-rate regions, the linearly increasing hardware complexity makes its efficient implementation difficult. To this end, the stochastic list SC polar decoding algorithm is proposed in this paper to provide a good tradeoff between performance and complexity. In order to increase the decoding performance of stochastic list SC polar decoder, doubling probability approach is presented. The corresponding hardware architecture is also given. The approximate doubling approach is employed to facilitate the efficient implementation. Implementation results have shown that the proposed stochastic list SC polar decoder can achieve a good trade-off between performance and complexity.

Double-Parity-Check CA-SCL Encoding and Decoding for Polar Codes

Fang Yuan, Bin Tian

Due to the unsatisfactory block error rate (BLER) performance of short or moderate block , the further development of polar codes is limited. In this paper, the parity-check codes concatenated cyclic redundancy check aided successive cancellation list (CA-SCL) decoding algorithms are studied. Then, an efficient concatenated method, double-parity-check CA-SCL (DP-CA-SCL) polar codes, is proposed according to exiting parity-check decoding algorithms. Not only can this new method improve the BLER performance in short or moderate block, but also it can guarantee the reduction of complexity relative to original CA-SCL method. The simulations in additive white Gaussian noise channel with binary phase shift keying modulation reveal that the DP-CA-SCL polar codes can provide significant performance gains. Comparing to the original CA-SCL decoding, there are 0.5 dB performance gains using proposed method at BLER of 10-3with (128, 64) polar codes. For another moderate block (256, 128) polar codes, it can also guarantee performance gains at least 0.18 dB.
