Abstract

We introduce a family of paired-composite-fermion trial wave functions for any odd Cooper-pair angular momentum. These wave functions are parameter-free and can be efficiently projected into the lowest Landau level. We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study three cases: Firstly, the Moore-Read phase, which serves us as a benchmark. Secondly, we explore the pairing associated with the anti-Pfaffian and the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian. Specifically, we assess whether their trial states feature exponentially decaying correlations and thus represent gapped phases of matter. For Moore-Read and anti-Pfaffian we find decay lengths of ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\text{Moore-Read}}=1.30(5)$ and ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\text{anti-Pfaffian}}=1.38(14)$, in units of the magnetic length. By contrast, for the case of PH-Pfaffian, we find no evidence of a finite length scale for up to 56 particles.

Numerical exploration of trial wave functions for the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian

Ryan V. Mishmash, David F. Mross, Jason Alicea +1 more

We numerically assess model wave functions for the recently proposed particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian (``PH-Pfaffian'') topological order, a phase consistent with the recently reported thermal Hall conductance [M. Banerjee et al., Nature 559, 205 (2018)] at the ever enigmatic $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ quantum Hall plateau. We find that the most natural Moore-Read-inspired trial state for the PH-Pfaffian, when projected into the lowest Landau level, exhibits a remarkable numerical similarity on accessible system sizes with the corresponding (compressible) composite Fermi liquid. Consequently, this PH-Pfaffian trial state performs reasonably well energetically in the half-filled lowest Landau level, but is likely not a good starting point for understanding the $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$ ground state. Our results suggest that the PH-Pfaffian model wave function either encodes anomalously weak $p$-wave pairing of composite fermions or fails to represent a gapped, incompressible phase altogether.

Pairing of particle-hole symmetric composite fermions in half-filled Landau level

Zhiqiang Wang, Sudip Chakravarty

In a recent proposal of the half-filled Landau level, the composite fermions are taken to be Dirac particles and particle-hole symmetric. Cooper pairing of these composite fermions in different angular momentum channels, $\ensuremath{\ell}$, can give rise to different kinds of Pfaffian states. In addition to the well-known Moore-Read Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, a new putative particle-hole symmetric Pfaffian state, corresponding to the $s$-wave pairing channel, was also proposed. However, the possible underlying pairing mechanism is not clear at all. In this work we provide a specific pairing mechanism for realizing some of these Pfaffian states. We show that there can be nonzero pairing in angular momentum channels $|\ensuremath{\ell}|\ensuremath{\ge}1$ depending on the magnitude of a coupling constant. There is a quantum phase transition from the Dirac composite Fermi-liquid state to Cooper pairing states in angular momentum channels $|\ensuremath{\ell}|\ensuremath{\ge}1$ as the coupling constant is tuned across its critical point value. Surprisingly the particle-hole symmetric $\ensuremath{\ell}=0$ channel pairing turns out to be impossible irrespective of the size of the coupling constant.

Quasiparticles and excitons for the Pfaffian quantum Hall state

Ivan Dario Jimenez Rodriguez, Antoine Sterdyniak, Maria Hermanns +2 more

We propose trial wave functions for quasiparticle and exciton excitations of the Moore-Read Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states, both for bosons and for fermions, and study these numerically. Our construction of trial wave functions employs a picture of the bosonic Moore-Read state as a symmetrized double layer composite fermion state. We obtain the number of independent angular momentum multiplets of quasiparticle and exciton trial states for systems of up to 20 electrons. We find that the counting for quasielectrons at large angular momentum on the sphere matches that expected from the conformal field theory (CFT) that describes the Moore-Read state's boundary theory. In particular, the counting for quasielectrons is the same as for quasiholes, in accordance with the idea that the CFT describing both sides of the Fractional Quantum Hall plateau should be the same. We also show that our trial wave functions have good overlaps with exact wave functions obtained using various interactions, including second Landau level Coulomb interactions and the three-body delta interaction for which the Pfaffian states and their quasiholes are exact ground states. We discuss how these results relate to recent work by Sreejith et al. on a similar set of trial wave functions for excitations over the Pfaffian state as well as to earlier work by Hansson et al., which has produced trial wave functions for quasiparticles based on conformal field theory methods and by Bernevig and Haldane, which produced trial wave functions based on clustering properties and ``squeezing.''

Energy minimization of paired composite fermion wave functions in the spherical geometry

Greg J. Henderson, Gunnar Möller, Steven H. Simon

We perform the energy minimization of the paired composite fermion (CF) wave functions, proposed by M\"oller and Simon (MS) [Phys. Rev. B 77, 075319 (2008)] and extended by Yutushui and Mross (YM) [Phys. Rev. B 102, 195153 (2020)], where the energy is minimized by varying the CF pairing function, in the case of an approximate model of the Coulomb interaction in the second Landau level for pairing channels $\ensuremath{\ell}=\ensuremath{-}1,3,1$, which are expected to be in the Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, and particle-hole symmetric (PH) Pfaffian phases, respectively. It is found that the energy of the $\ensuremath{\ell}=\ensuremath{-}1$ MS wave function can be reduced substantially below that of the Moore-Read wave function at small system sizes; however, in the $\ensuremath{\ell}=3$ case the energy cannot be reduced much below that of the YM trial wave function. Nonetheless, both our optimized and unoptimized wave functions with $\ensuremath{\ell}=\ensuremath{-}1,3$ extrapolate to roughly the same energy per particle in the thermodynamic limit. For the $\ensuremath{\ell}=1$ case, the optimization makes no qualitative difference and these PH-Pfaffian wave functions are still energetically unfavorable. The effective CF pairing is analyzed in the resulting wave functions, where the effective pairing for the $\ensuremath{\ell}=\ensuremath{-}1,3$ channels is found to be well approximated by a weak-pairing BCS ansatz and the $\ensuremath{\ell}=1$ wave functions show no sign of emergent CF pairing.

Surprising robustness of particle-hole symmetry for composite-fermion liquids

G. J. Sreejith, Yuhe Zhang, Jainendra K. Jain

We report on fixed phase diffusion Monte Carlo calculations that show that, even for a large amount of Landau level mixing, the energies of the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian phases remain very nearly the same, as also do the excitation gaps at $1/3$ and $2/3$. These results, combined with previous theoretical and experimental investigations, indicate that particle hole (PH) symmetry for fully spin polarized composite fermion states is much more robust than a priori expected, emerging even in models that explicitly break PH symmetry. We provide insight into this fact by showing that the low energy physics of a generic repulsive 3-body interaction is captured, to a large extent and over a range of filling factors, by a mean field approximation that maps it into a PH symmetric 2-body interaction. This explains why Landau level mixing, which effectively generates such a generic 3-body interaction, is inefficient in breaking PH symmetry. As a byproduct, our results provide a systematic construction of a 2-body interaction which produces, to a good approximation, the Pfaffian wave function as its ground state.
