Blocked populations in ring-shaped optical lattices

Abstract

We study a special dynamical regime of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped lattice where the populations in each site remain constant during the time evolution. The states in this regime are characterized by equal occupation numbers in alternate wells and nontrivial phases, while the phase differences between neighboring sites evolve in time yielding persistent currents that oscillate around the lattice. We show that the velocity circulation around the ring lattice alternates between two values determined by the number of wells and with a specific time period that is only driven by the on-site interaction energy parameter. In contrast to the self-trapping regime present in optical lattices, the occupation number at each site does not show any oscillation and the particle imbalance does not possess a lower bound for the phenomenon to occur. These findings are predicted with a multimode model and confirmed by full three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii simulations using an effective on-site interaction energy parameter.

Multimode model for an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped optical lattice

Dora M. Jezek, Horacio M. Cataldo

We study the population dynamics of a ring-shaped optical lattice with a high number of particles per site and a low (less than ten) number of wells. Using a localized on-site basis defined in terms of stationary states, we were able to construct a multiple-mode model depending on relevant hopping and on-site energy parameters. We show that in the case of two wells, our model corresponds exactly to a recent improvement of the two-mode model. We derive a formula for the self-trapping period, which turns out to be chiefly ruled by the on-site interaction energy parameter. By comparing to time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii simulations, we show that the multimode model results can be enhanced in a remarkable way over all the regimes by only renormalizing such a parameter. Finally, using a different approach which involves only the ground-state density, we derive an effective interaction energy parameter that turns out to be in accordance with the renormalized one.

Bose–Einstein condensates in rotating ring-shaped lattices: a multimode model

M Nigro, P. Capuzzi, D M Jezek

Abstract We develop a multimode model that describes the dynamics on a rotating Bose–Einstein condensate confined by a ring-shaped optical lattice with large filling numbers. The parameters of the model are obtained as a function of the rotation frequency using full 3D Gross–Pitaevskii simulations. From such numerical calculations, we extract the velocity field induced at each site and analyze the relation and the differences between the phase of the hopping parameter of our model and the Peierls phase. To this end, a detailed discussion of such phases is presented in geometrical terms which takes into account the position of the junctions for different configurations. For circularly symmetric onsite densities a simple analytical relation between the hopping phase and the angular momentum is found for arbitrary number of sites. Finally, we confront the results of the rotating multimode model dynamics with Gross–Pitaevskii simulations finding a perfect agreement.

Dynamics in multiple-well Bose-Einstein condensates

M. Nigro, P. Capuzzi, Horacio M. Cataldo +1 more

We study the dynamics of three-dimensional weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates using a multimode model with an effective interaction parameter. The system is confined by a ring-shaped four-well trapping potential. By constructing a two-mode Hamiltonian in a reduced highly symmetric phase space, we examine the periodic orbits and calculate their time periods both in the self-trapping and Josephson regimes. The dynamics in the vicinity of the reduced phase space is investigated by means of a Floquet multiplier analysis, finding regions of different linear stability and analyzing their implications on the exact dynamics. The numerical exploration in an extended region of the phase space demonstrates that two-mode tools can also be useful for performing a partition of the space in different regimes. Comparisons with Gross-Pitaevskii simulations confirm these findings and emphasize the importance of properly determining the effective on-site interaction parameter governing the multimode dynamics.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of circular flow modes in a ring array of Bose-Einstein condensates

Noriaki Tsukada

We numerically investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a circular flow mode in a ring array of Bose-Einstein condensates, which consists of $M$ identical Bose-Einstein condensates that couple to the nearest-neighbor sites by tunneling. Introducing a rotational potential in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a series of circular flow modes is resonantly excited. For the initial conditions with uniform density and one-round phase difference of $2\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}(l=0,1,\dots{},M\ensuremath{-}1)$, two circular flow modes are excited for each circulation-quantized number $l$. It is shown that these circular flow modes periodically appear in time in the presence of the rotational field and persistently survive with a constant shape even after the external potential is removed, the transitions between the circular flow modes with different quantized number $l$ can be realized by applying the phase-imprinting optical pulses, and the rotational velocity of the circular flow mode can be continuously modulated by adiabatically tuning the scattering length in a magnetic field, i.e., by use of the Feshbach resonance.

Instability and particle-current control of a parametrically driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped lattice

L. Q. Lai

We investigate the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional ring-shaped lattice with the Peierls phase and site-dependent modulations, where the condensate is confined in a single deep trap and the interparticle interaction strength is modulated by a time-periodic driving field. The system has a finite spectrum, which limits the excitation regimes, and the Peierls phase typically induces imbalanced complex hopping amplitudes in each direction, leading to nonzero net particle currents along the lattice chain, which can hold nearly persistent even when the driving field is turned off after half of the period. The configuration provides a specific way for the coherent control of particle currents in many-body quantum systems with the help of an external driving field and promotes the possible applications in future closed-loop atom circuits.
