Abstract

We numerically investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a circular flow mode in a ring array of Bose-Einstein condensates, which consists of $M$ identical Bose-Einstein condensates that couple to the nearest-neighbor sites by tunneling. Introducing a rotational potential in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a series of circular flow modes is resonantly excited. For the initial conditions with uniform density and one-round phase difference of $2\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}(l=0,1,\dots{},M\ensuremath{-}1)$, two circular flow modes are excited for each circulation-quantized number $l$. It is shown that these circular flow modes periodically appear in time in the presence of the rotational field and persistently survive with a constant shape even after the external potential is removed, the transitions between the circular flow modes with different quantized number $l$ can be realized by applying the phase-imprinting optical pulses, and the rotational velocity of the circular flow mode can be continuously modulated by adiabatically tuning the scattering length in a magnetic field, i.e., by use of the Feshbach resonance.

Bose-Einstein condensates in rotating ring-shaped lattices: A multimode model

Nigro, Mauro, Capuzzi, Pablo, Jezek, Dora Marta

We develop a multimode model that describes the dynamics on a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a ring-shaped optical lattice with large filling numbers. The parameters of the model are obtained as a function of the rotation frequency using full 3D Gross-Pitaevskii simulations. From such numerical calculations, we extract the velocity field induced at each site and analyze the relation and the differences between the phase of the hopping parameter of our model and the Peierls phase. To this end, a detailed discussion of such phases is presented in geometrical terms which takes into account the position of the junctions for different configurations. For circularly symmetric onsite densities a simple analytical relation between the hopping phase and the angular momentum is found for arbitrary number of sites. Finally, we confront the results of the rotating multimode model dynamics with Gross-Pitaevskii simulations finding a perfect agreement.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates near Feshbach resonance in external potential

Xiao-Fei Zhang, Xinghua Hu, Deng‐Shan Wang +2 more

We review our recent theoretical advances in the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions using Feshbach resonance and external potential. A set of analytic and numerical methods for Gross-Pitaevskii equations are developed to study the nonlinear dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Analytically, we present the integrable conditions for the Gross-Pitaevskii equations with tunable interactions and external potential, and obtain a family of exact analytical solutions for one- and two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in one and two-dimensional cases. Then we apply these models to investigate the dynamics of solitons and collisions between two solitons. Numerically, the stability of the analytic exact solutions are checked and the phenomena, such as the dynamics and modulation of the ring dark soliton and vector-soliton, soliton conversion via Feshbach resonance, quantized soliton and vortex in quasi-two-dimensional are also investigated. Both the exact and numerical solutions show that the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates can be effectively controlled by the Feshbach resonance and external potential, which offer a good opportunity for manipulation of atomic matter waves and nonlinear excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Tunneling of persistent currents in coupled ring-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates

Artem Oliinyk, A. I. Yakimenko, Boris A. Malomed

Abstract Considerable progress in experimental studies of atomic gases in a toroidal geometry opens up novel prospects for the investigation of fundamental properties of superfluid states and creation of new configurations for atomtronic circuits. In particular, a setting with Bose–Einstein condensates loaded in a dual-ring trap suggests a possibility to consider the dynamics of tunneling between condensates with different angular momenta. Accordingly, we address the tunneling in a pair of coaxial three-dimensional (3D) ring-shaped condensates separated by a horizontal potential barrier. A truncated (finite-mode) Galerkin model and direct simulations of the underlying 3D Gross–Pitaevskii equation are used for the analysis of tunneling superflows driven by an initial imbalance in atomic populations of the rings. The superflows through the corresponding Bose–Josephson junction are strongly affected by persistent currents in the parallel rings. Josephson oscillations of the population imbalance and angular momenta in the rings are obtained for co-rotating states and non-rotating ones. On the other hand, the azimuthal structure of the tunneling flow demonstrates formation of Josephson vortices (fluxons) with zero net current through the junction for hybrid states , built of counter-rotating persistent currents in the coupled rings.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in linear- and circular-chain optical lattices

Noriaki Tsukada

We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices that have a linear-or a circular-chain configuration with the tunneling couplings between nearest-neighbor lattice sites. A discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation has been solved for various initial conditions and for a definite range of repulsive and attractive interatomic interactions. It is shown that the diversity of the spatiotemporal dynamics of the atomic population distribution such as a macroscopic self-trapping, bright and dark solitons, and symmetry breaking is derived from the positive and negative interatomic interactions. For the circular-chain configuration, two types of rotational modes are obtained as we introduce a definite relation for the initial phase conditions.

Persistent currents in a circular array of Bose-Einstein condensates

Gheorghe Sorin Paraoanu

A ring-shaped array of Bose-Einstein condensed atomic gases can display circular currents if the relative phase of neighboring condensates becomes locked to certain values. It is shown that, irrespective of the mechanism responsible for generating these states, only a restricted set of currents are stable, depending on the number of condensates, on the interaction and tunneling energies, and on the total number of particles. Different instabilities due to quasiparticle excitations are characterized, and possible experimental setups for testing the stability prediction are also discussed.
