Possible insulator-pseudogap crossover in the attractive Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice

Abstract

We study the attractive Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice to understand the normal state above the superconducting critical temperature in a flat band system. We use cluster dynamical mean-field theory to compute the two-particle susceptibilities with full quantum fluctuations included in the cluster. At interaction strengths lower than the hopping amplitude, we find that the normal state on the flat band shows insulating behavior stemming from the localization properties of the flat band. A flat-band enhanced pseudogap with a depleted spectral function arises at larger interactions.

Enhancement of pairing correlations due to nearly flat bands in the plaquette-Lieb Hubbard model

Kai Cheng, Shi-Chao Fang, Zhongbing Huang

Motivated by recent research works on the flat-band correlated electron systems, we construct a plaquette-Lieb lattice, which exhibits nearly flat bands close to the Fermi level around half-filling, when the inter-plaquette hopping integral is much smaller than the intra-plaquette one. A detailed comparison study with the well-known checkerboard lattice indicates that there exist significant differences for the pairing property between the two lattices, and the nearly flat bands on the plaquette-Lieb lattice strongly enhance the [Formula: see text]-wave pairing correlation for repulsive on-site Hubbard interaction and [Formula: see text]-wave pairing correlation for attractive on-site Hubbard interaction. Our study not only provides a new lattice with nearly flat bands, but also deepens the understanding of electronic structure on superconductivity.

Pairing and superconductivity from weak to strong coupling in the attractive Hubbard model

A. Toschi, Paolo Barone, Massimo Capone +1 more

The finite-temperature phase diagram of the attractive Hubbard model is studied by means of the dynamical mean-field theory. We first consider the normal phase of the model by explicitly frustrating the superconducting ordering. In this case, we obtain a first-order pairing transition between a metallic phase and a paired phase formed by strongly coupled incoherent pairs. The transition line ends in a finite temperature critical point, but a crossover between two qualitatively different solutions still occurs at higher temperature. Comparing the superconducting- and the normal-phase solutions, we find that the superconducting instability always occurs before the pairing transition in the normal phase, i.e. T c > T pairing . Nevertheless, the high-temperature phase diagram at T > T c is still characterized by a crossover from a metallic phase to a preformed pair phase. We characterize this crossover by computing different observables that can be used to identify the pseudogap region, like the spin susceptibility, the specific heat and the single-particle spectral function.

Superconducting transitions in flat-band systems

Vladimir Iglovikov, F. Hébert, Benoît Grémaud +2 more

The physics of strongly correlated quantum particles within a flat band was originally explored as a route to itinerant ferromagnetism and, indeed, a celebrated theorem by Lieb rigorously establishes that the ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice with an unequal number of sites in each sublattice must have nonzero spin $S$ at half filling. Recently, there has been interest in Lieb geometries due to the possibility of topological insulator, nematic, and Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phases. In this paper, we extend the understanding of the attractive Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice by using determinant quantum Monte Carlo to study real space charge and pair correlation functions not addressed by the Lieb theorems. Specifically, our results show unusual charge and charge transfer signatures within the flat band, and a reduction in pairing order at $\ensuremath{\rho}=2/3$ and $\ensuremath{\rho}=4/3$, the points at which the flat band is first occupied and then completely filled. We compare our results to the case of flat bands in the Kagome lattice and demonstrate that the behavior observed in the two cases is rather different.

Numerically Exact Study of Flat-Band Superconductivity

I. S. Tupitsyn, B. Currie, Boris V. Svistunov +2 more

Current theories of high-temperature superconductivity in flat-band systems predict a linear dependence of the transition temperature on the attractive interaction, $T_c(U) = c|U|$. However, the value of $c$ and the full nonlinear $T_c(U)$ curve---with a maximum at large $|U|$---are known beyond mean-field and quantum geometry estimates only for systems with isolated flat bands. Using a controlled diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique, we trace the onset of superfluid response in the Lieb lattice with attractive Hubbard interaction. Focusing on the half-filled flat-band case, where the ordering mechanism differs fundamentally from both BCS and BEC (preformed Cooper pair) scenarios, we find that the pairing response diverges linearly with decreasing temperature over a broad range of $U$, leading to a sharp crossover to long-range correlations at a characteristic temperature $T_*$, which provides a controlled upper bound on $T_c$. The highest $T_*$ occurs when all three bands touch at a single momentum point, potentially corresponding to high $T_c$ values.

Temperature and doping induced instabilities of the repulsive Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice

Pramod Kumar, Tuomas I. Vanhala, Päivi Törmä

The properties of a phase at finite interactions can be significantly influenced by the underlying dispersion of the noninteracting Hamiltonian. We demonstrate this by studying the repulsive Hubbard model on the two-dimensional Lieb lattice, which has a flat band for vanishing interaction $U$. We perform real-space dynamical mean-field theory calculations at different temperatures and dopings using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. Studying the frequency dependence of the self-energy, we find that a nonmagnetic metallic region at finite temperature displays non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which is a concomitant of the flat-band singularity. At half-filling, we also find a magnetically ordered region, where the order parameter varies linearly with the interaction strength, and a strongly correlated Mott insulating phase. The double occupancy decreases sharply for small $U$, highlighting the flat-band contribution. Away from half-filling, we observe the stripe order, i.e., an inhomogeneous spin and charge density wave of finite wavelength, which turns into a sublattice ordering at higher temperatures.

Interplay between the Pseudogap and Superconductivity in Doped Mott Insulators: a Cluster Dynamical Mean-Field Theory Study

Jinbin 晋斌 Liu 刘, Dao‐Xin Yao, Wéi Wú

Abstract We investigate the interplay between the pseudogap state and d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional doped Hubbard model by employing an eight-site cluster dynamical mean-field theory method. By tuning electron hopping parameters, the strong-coupling pseudogap in the two-dimensional Hubbard model can be either enhanced or suppressed in the doped Mott insulator regime. We find that in underdoped cases, the closing of pseudogap leads to a significant enhancement of superconductivity, indicating competition between the two in the underdoped regime. In contrast, at large dopings, suppressing the pseudogap is accompanied by a concurrent decrease in the superconducting transition temperature T c, which can be attributed to a reduction in antiferromagnetic correlations behind both the pseudogap and superconductivity. We elucidate this evolving relationship between pseudogap and superconductivity across different doping regimes.
