Abstract

We investigate the energy-constrained (EC) diamond norm distance between unitary channels acting on possibly infinite-dimensional quantum systems, and establish a number of results. First, we prove that optimal EC discrimination between two unitary channels does not require the use of any entanglement. Extending a result by Acín, we also show that a finite number of parallel queries suffices to achieve zero error discrimination even in this EC setting. Second, we employ EC diamond norms to study a novel type of quantum speed limits, which apply to pairs of quantum dynamical semigroups. We expect these results to be relevant for benchmarking internal dynamics of quantum devices. Third, we establish a version of the Solovay-Kitaev theorem that applies to the group of Gaussian unitaries over a finite number of modes, with the approximation error being measured with respect to the EC diamond norm relative to the photon number Hamiltonian.

Energy-constrained diamond norms and quantum dynamical semigroups

Максим Евгеньевич Широков, Alexander Semenovich Holevo

In the developing theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels the relevance of the energy-constrained diamond norms was recently corroborated both from physical and information-theoretic points of view. In this paper we study necessary and sufficient conditions for differentiability with respect to these norms of the strongly continuous semigroups of quantum channels (quantum dynamical semigroups). We show that these conditions can be expressed in terms of the generator of the semigroup. We also analyze conditions for representation of a strongly continuous semigroup of quantum channels as an exponential series converging w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm. Examples of semigroups having such a representation are presented.

Efficiently Computable Strategies and Limits for Bosonic Channel Discrimination

Zixin Huang, Ludovico Lami, Vishal Singh +1 more

Discriminating between noisy quantum processes is a central primitive for quantum communication, metrology, and computing. While discrimination limits for finite-dimensional channels are well understood, the continuous-variable setting, particularly under experimentally relevant energy constraints, remains significantly less developed. In this work, we establish an energy-constrained chain rule for the Belavkin-Staszewski channel divergence, which yields a fundamental upper bound on the error exponents achievable by fully adaptive, energy-constrained quantum channel discrimination protocols. We then derive efficiently computable bounds on asymmetric error exponents for energy-constrained discrimination of bosonic dephasing and loss-dephasing channels. Specifically, we show that three operationally relevant quantities -- the measured relative entropy, the Umegaki relative entropy, and the geometric Renyi divergence -- admit semidefinite program (SDP) formulations when the input energy is bounded and the Hilbert space is suitably truncated. Applying these tools, we demonstrate that optimal probes for these channels under energy constraints are Fock-diagonal, and we also enable numerically precise evaluation of bounds on achievable error exponents across discrimination strategies ranging from separable to fully adaptive. The resulting SDPs provide practical benchmarks for quantum-limited sensing in low-energy bosonic platforms.

Energy-constrained diamond norm with applications to the uniform continuity of continuous variable channel capacities

Andreas Winter

The channels, and more generally superoperators acting on the trace class operators of a quantum system naturally form a Banach space under the completely bounded trace norm (aka diamond norm). However, it is well-known that in infinite dimension, the norm topology is often "too strong" for reasonable applications. Here, we explore a recently introduced energy-constrained diamond norm on superoperators (subject to an energy bound on the input states). Our main motivation is the continuity of capacities and other entropic quantities of quantum channels, but we also present an application to the continuity of one-parameter unitary groups and certain one-parameter semigroups of quantum channels.

On the Energy-Constrained Diamond Norm and Its Application in Quantum Information Theory

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

We consider a family of energy-constrained diamond norms on the set of Hermitian- preserving linear maps (superoperators) between Banach spaces of trace class operators. We prove that any norm from this family generates strong (pointwise) convergence on the set of all quantum channels (which is more adequate for describing variations of infinite-dimensional channels than the diamond norm topology). We obtain continuity bounds for information characteristics (in particular, classical capacities) of energy-constrained infinite-dimensional quantum channels (as functions of a channel) with respect to the energy-constrained diamond norms, which imply uniform continuity of these characteristics with respect to the strong convergence topology.

Energy-Constrained Distinguishability Measures for Assessing Performance in Quantum Information Processing

Kunal Sharma

The aim of this thesis is to develop a framework for assessing performance in quantum information processing with continuous variables. In particular, we focus on quantifying the fundamental limitations on communication and computation over bosonic Gaussian systems. Due to their infinite-dimensional structure, we make a realistic assumption of energy constraints on the input states of continuous-variable (CV) quantum operations. Our first contribution is to show that energy-constrained distinguishability measures can be used to establish tight upper bounds on the communication capacities of phase-insensitive, bosonic Gaussian channels -- thermal, amplifier, and additive-noise channels. We then prove that an optimal Gaussian input state for the energy-constrained, generalized channel divergence of two particular Gaussian channels is the two-mode squeezed vacuum state that saturates the energy constraint. Next, we develop theoretical and numerical tools based on energy-constrained distinguishability measures to quantify the accuracy in implementing Gaussian unitary operations. Finally, we propose an optimal test for the performance of CV quantum teleportation in terms of the energy-constrained channel fidelity between ideal CV teleportation and its experimental implementation. Here we prove that the optimal state for testing CV teleportation is an entangled superposition of twin-Fock states. These results are relevant for experiments that make use of Gaussian unitaries and CV teleportation.
