Energy-constrained diamond norm with applications to the uniform continuity of continuous variable channel capacities

Abstract

The channels, and more generally superoperators acting on the trace class operators of a quantum system naturally form a Banach space under the completely bounded trace norm (aka diamond norm). However, it is well-known that in infinite dimension, the norm topology is often "too strong" for reasonable applications. Here, we explore a recently introduced energy-constrained diamond norm on superoperators (subject to an energy bound on the input states). Our main motivation is the continuity of capacities and other entropic quantities of quantum channels, but we also present an application to the continuity of one-parameter unitary groups and certain one-parameter semigroups of quantum channels.

On the Energy-Constrained Diamond Norm and Its Application in Quantum Information Theory

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

We consider a family of energy-constrained diamond norms on the set of Hermitian- preserving linear maps (superoperators) between Banach spaces of trace class operators. We prove that any norm from this family generates strong (pointwise) convergence on the set of all quantum channels (which is more adequate for describing variations of infinite-dimensional channels than the diamond norm topology). We obtain continuity bounds for information characteristics (in particular, classical capacities) of energy-constrained infinite-dimensional quantum channels (as functions of a channel) with respect to the energy-constrained diamond norms, which imply uniform continuity of these characteristics with respect to the strong convergence topology.

Convergence Rates for Quantum Evolution and Entropic Continuity Bounds in Infinite Dimensions

Simon Becker, Nilanjana Datta

Abstract: By extending the concept of energy-constrained diamond norms, we obtain continuity bounds on the dynamics of both closed and open quantum systems in infinite dimensions, which are stronger than previously known bounds. We extensively discuss applications of our theory to quantum speed limits, attenuator and amplifier channels, the quantum Boltzmann equation, and quantum Brownian motion. Next, we obtain explicit log-Lipschitz continuity bounds for entropies of infinite-dimensional quantum systems, and classical capacities of infinite-dimensional quantum channels under energy-constraints. These bounds are determined by the high energy spectrum of the underlying Hamiltonian and can be evaluated using Weyl’s law.

Energy-constrained diamond norms and quantum dynamical semigroups

Максим Евгеньевич Широков, Alexander Semenovich Holevo

In the developing theory of infinite-dimensional quantum channels the relevance of the energy-constrained diamond norms was recently corroborated both from physical and information-theoretic points of view. In this paper we study necessary and sufficient conditions for differentiability with respect to these norms of the strongly continuous semigroups of quantum channels (quantum dynamical semigroups). We show that these conditions can be expressed in terms of the generator of the semigroup. We also analyze conditions for representation of a strongly continuous semigroup of quantum channels as an exponential series converging w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm. Examples of semigroups having such a representation are presented.

On Completion of the Cone of Completely Positive Linear Maps with Respect to the Energy-Constrained Diamond Norm

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

For a given positive operator G we consider the cones of linear maps between Banach spaces of trace class operators characterized by the Stinespring-like representation with $$\sqrt G $$ -bounded and $$\sqrt G $$ -infinitesimal operators correspondingly. We prove the completeness of both cones w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm induced by G (as an energy observable) and the coincidence of the second cone with the completion of the cone of completely positive linear maps w.r.t. this norm. We show that the sets of quantum channels and quantum operations are complete w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm for any energy observable. Some properties of the maps belonging to the introduced cones are described. In particular, the corresponding generalization of the Kretschmann-Schlingemann-Werner theorem is obtained. We also give a nonconstructive description of the completion of the set of all Hermitian-preserving completely bounded linear maps w.r.t. the energy-constrained diamond norm.

Continuity of certain quantum channel divergences

Morgan Jones

The geometric channel fidelity, the geometric Rényi divergences and the Belavkin--Staszewski relative entropy give converse bounds for capacities, discrimination and estimation. Channels are known only approximately, yet two pairs of channels with equal sums can be arbitrarily close in the diamond norm and have fidelities $0$ and $1$. The remedy is the Arveson--Radon--Nikodym derivative $T$ of one map with respect to the sum $Ω$, whose transpose is the environment effect selecting that map in a Stinespring dilation of $Ω$. In $T$, these quantities and all maximal $f$-divergences of operator convex $f$ are continuous, with explicit dimension-free moduli; for two pairs of channels with the same sum the fidelities differ by at most $2\|T_1-T_2\|_\infty^{1/2}$, which gives Hölder continuity in the diamond norm on such splittings. The fidelity is continuous at a pair of completely positive maps exactly when the Choi matrix of the sum is invertible or the fidelity vanishes: noisy channels of full Kraus rank are continuity points, unitary gates are not.

The geometric channel fidelity, the geometric Rényi divergences and the Belavkin--Staszewski relative entropy give converse bounds for capacities, discrimination and estimation. Channels are known only approximately, yet two pairs of channels with equal sums can be arbitrarily close in the diamond norm and have fidelities 000 and 111. The remedy is the Arveson--Radon--Nikodym derivative TTT of one map with respect to the sum ΩΩΩ, whose transpose is the environment effect selecting that map in a Stinespring dilation of ΩΩΩ. In TTT, these quantities and all maximal fff-divergences of operator convex fff are continuous, with explicit dimension-free moduli; for two pairs of channels with the same sum the fidelities differ by at most 2∥T1−T2∥∞1/22\|T_1-T_2\|_\infty^{1/2}2∥T1−T2∥∞1/2, which gives Hölder continuity in the diamond norm on such splittings. The fidelity is continuous at a pair of completely positive maps exactly when the Choi matrix of the sum is invertible or the fidelity vanishes: noisy channels of full Kraus rank are continuity points, unitary gates are not.
