Abstract

Abstract Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics and an important resource for quantum communication. For practical applications, it remains a challenge to protect EPR steering from decoherence due to its intrinsic difference from entanglement. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian EPR steering and entanglement in lossy and noisy environments using measurement-based noiseless linear amplification. Different from entanglement distillation, the extension of steerable region happens in the distillation of EPR steering, besides the enhancement of steerabilities. We demonstrate that the two-way or one-way steerable region is extended after the distillation of EPR steering when the NLA is implemented based on Bob’s or Alice’s measurement results. We also show that the NLA helps to extract the secret key from the insecure region in one-sided device-independent quantum key distribution with EPR steering. Our work paves the way for quantum communication exploiting EPR steering in practical quantum channels.

Distillation of Multipartite Gaussian EPR Steering Based on Measurement-Based Noiseless Linear Amplification

Yang Liu

Multipartite Gaussian Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering is a key resource for quantum networks, but in practice it is strongly degraded by channel loss and excess noise. This motivates the need to distill multipartite Gaussian EPR steering across all relevant mode partitions. Here we propose and analyze a measurement-based noiseless linear amplification (NLA) protocol that distills Gaussian EPR steering in a four-mode square cluster state transmitted through lossy and noisy channels. Starting from a CV cluster shared by a transmitted node A and three local nodes (B, C, and D), we reconstruct the covariance matrix of the Gaussian cluster state and evaluate Gaussian steering monotones for all (1+1), (1+2), and (1+3) bipartitions before and after applying measurement-based NLA. We show that appropriate conditioning on the noisy mode or on selected relay nodes systematically restores and enhances directional steering, extends both one-way and two-way steerable regions, and preserves the monogamy constraints characteristic of Gaussian graph states. Taken together, these results show that measurement-based NLA provides a practical route to distributing robust multipartite steering in CV cluster architectures, thereby strengthening the foundations for continuous-variable quantum information processing.

Enhancement of multimode entanglement and asymmetric steering by noiseless linear amplification

Xiaofeng Wang, Shuqin Zhai

Abstract Quantum entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an important resource for quantum information. However, it is very fragile and prone to decoherence. Recently, it has been shown that the noiseless linear amplification (NLA) which can be applied to any channel with loss and noise can effectively counteract the effect of quantum decoherence. Besides, the initial quantum correlation can even be exceed by using this method. Thus, it is a useful tool in enhancing quantum entanglement. In this paper, we apply NLA to the tripartite GHZ entangled state and analyze quantum entanglement and steering after NLA. The results showed that the NLA can effectively improve quantum entanglement and expand the range of quantum steering. Simultaneously, they also provide useful direction for the distillation of quantum state using NLA in practical quantum communication.

Swapping of Gaussian Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering

Meihong Wang, Zhongzhong Qin, Xiaolong Su

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a quantum mechanical phenomenon that allows one party to steer the state of a distant party by exploiting their shared entanglement. It has potential applications in secure quantum communication. In this paper, we present two swapping schemes of Gaussian EPR steering, single-channel and dual-channel schemes, by the technique of entanglement swapping. Two space-separated independent EPR steering states without a direct interaction present EPR steering after deterministic swapping. By comparing the EPR steering of the single-channel and dual-channel schemes, we show that the transmission distance of the single-channel scheme is much longer than that of the symmetric dual-channel scheme. Different from entanglement swapping, one-way EPR steering is presented after swapping over lossy channels. The most interesting thing is that the change of the EPR steering direction is observed in the dual-channel scheme. We also show that excess noise in a quantum channel will shorten the transmission distance of the swapping, even leading to the sudden death of EPR steering. The presented schemes provide a technical reference for remote quantum communications with EPR steering.

Sudden death and revival of Gaussian Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steering in noisy channels

Xiaowei Deng, Yang Liu, Meihong Wang +2 more

Abstract Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering is a useful resource for secure quantum information tasks. It is crucial to investigate the effect of inevitable loss and noise in quantum channels on EPR steering. We analyze and experimentally demonstrate the influence of purity of quantum states and excess noise on Gaussian EPR steering by distributing a two-mode squeezed state through lossy and noisy channels, respectively. We show that the impurity of state never leads to sudden death of Gaussian EPR steering, but the noise in quantum channel can. Then we revive the disappeared Gaussian EPR steering by establishing a correlated noisy channel. Different from entanglement, the sudden death and revival of Gaussian EPR steering are directional. Our result confirms that EPR steering criteria proposed by Reid and I. Kogias et al. are equivalent in our case. The presented results pave way for asymmetric quantum information processing exploiting Gaussian EPR steering in noisy environment.

Experimental Quantification of Asymmetric Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering

Kai Sun, Xiang-Jun Ye, Jin‐Shi Xu +6 more

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering describes the ability of one observer to nonlocally "steer" the other observer's state through local measurements. EPR steering exhibits a unique asymmetric property; i.e., the steerability can differ between observers, which can lead to one-way EPR steering in which only one observer obtains steerability in the steering process. This property is inherently different from the symmetric concepts of entanglement and Bell nonlocality, and it has attracted increasing interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate asymmetric EPR steering for a class of two-qubit states in the case of two measurement settings. We propose a practical method to quantify the steerability. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for EPR steering and clearly demonstrate one-way EPR steering. Our work provides new insight into the fundamental asymmetry of quantum nonlocality and has potential applications in asymmetric quantum information processing.
