A formally exact master equation for open quantum systems

Abstract

We present a succinct and intuitive derivation of a formally exact master equation for general open quantum systems, without the use of an "inverse" map which was invoked in previous works on formally exact master equations. This formalism is applicable to non-Markovian regimes. We derive a second-order equation of motion for the illustrative spin-boson model at arbitrary temperatures, observing non-exponential decoherence and relaxation. Limiting our generic derivation to zero temperature, we also reproduce the result for the special case of a vacuum bath in Phys. Rev. A 81, 042103 (2010).

Exact non-Markovian master equation for the spin-boson and Jaynes-Cummings models

Luca Ferialdi

We provide the exact non-Markovian master equation for a two-level system interacting with a thermal bosonic bath, and we write the solution of such a master equation in terms of the Bloch vector. We show that previous approximated results are particular limits of our exact master equation. We generalize these results to more complex systems involving an arbitrary number of two-level systems coupled to different thermal baths, providing the exact master equations also for these systems. As an example of this general case we derive the master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Qubit Systems: Quantum-State Diffusion Equations Versus Master Equations

Yusui Chen, Ting Yu

In this review we discuss recent progress in the theory of open quantum systems based on non-MarkovianNon-Markovian quantum state diffusionQuantum state diffusion equation and master equationsMaster equation. In particular, we show that an exact master equation for an open quantum system consisting of a few qubits can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation. The exact master equation arises naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit systems collectively interacting with a colored noise. We illustrate our general theoretical formalism by the explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This exact qubit master equation accurately characterizes the time evolution of the qubit system in various parameter domains, and paves the way for investigation of the memory effect of an open quantum system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.

Exact Closed Master Equation for Gaussian Non-Markovian Dynamics

Luca Ferialdi

Non-Markovian master equations describe general open quantum systems when no approximation is made. We provide the exact closed master equation for the class of Gaussian, completely positive, trace preserving, non-Markovian dynamics. This very general result allows us to investigate a vast variety of physical systems. We show that the master equation for non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion is a particular case of our general result. Furthermore, we derive the master equation unraveled by a non-Markovian, dissipative stochastic Schrödinger equation, paving the way for the analysis of dissipative non-Markovian collapse models.

Dynamics of the nonequilibrium spin-boson model: A benchmark of master equations and their validity

Gerardo Suárez, Marcin Łobejko, Michał Horodecki

In recent years, there has been tremendous focus on identifying whether effective descriptions of open quantum systems such as master equations can accurately describe the dynamics of open quantum systems. One particular question is whether they provide the correct steady state in the long time limit. The transient regime is also of interest. Description of evolution by various master equations---some of them being not completely positive---is benchmarked against exact solutions [see, e.g., R. Hartmann and W. T. Strunz, Phys. Rev. A 101, 012103 (2020)]. An important property of true evolution is its non-Markovian features, which are not captured by the simplest completely positive master equations. In this paper we consider a non-Markovian yet completely positive evolution (known as refined weak coupling or cumulant equation) for the spin-boson model with an overdamped Drude-Lorentz spectral density and arbitrary coupling. We benchmark it against a numerically exact solution, as well as against other master equations, for different coupling strengths and temperatures. We find the cumulant to be a better description in the weak-coupling regime where it is supposed to be valid. For the examples considered it shows superiority at moderate and strong couplings in the low-temperature regime for all examples considered. In the high-temperature regime, however, its advantage vanishes. This indicates that the cumulant equation is a good candidate for simulations at weak to moderate coupling and low temperature. Our calculations are greatly facilitated due to our concise formulation of the cumulant equation by means of representation of the density matrix in the SU(N) basis.

Exact quantum master equation via the calculus on path integrals

Rui‐Xue Xu, Ping Cui, Xin-Qi Li +2 more

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems.

Exact non-Markovian master equations for multiple qubit systems: Quantum-trajectory approach

Yusui Chen, J. Q. You, Ting Yu

A wide class of exact master equations for a multiple qubit system can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding exact non-Markovian quantum-state diffusion equations. These exact master equations arise naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit system as a quantum memory coupled to a collective colored noisy source. The exact master equations are also important in optimal quantum control, quantum dissipation, and quantum thermodynamics. In this paper, we show that the exact non-Markovian master equation for a dissipative $N$-qubit system can be derived explicitly from the statistical average of the corresponding non-Markovian quantum trajectories. We illustrated our general formulation by an explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This multiple qubit master equation offers an accurate time evolution of quantum systems in various domains, and paves the way to investigate the memory effect of an open system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.
