Exact non-Markovian master equation for the spin-boson and Jaynes-Cummings models

Abstract

We provide the exact non-Markovian master equation for a two-level system interacting with a thermal bosonic bath, and we write the solution of such a master equation in terms of the Bloch vector. We show that previous approximated results are particular limits of our exact master equation. We generalize these results to more complex systems involving an arbitrary number of two-level systems coupled to different thermal baths, providing the exact master equations also for these systems. As an example of this general case we derive the master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model.

A formally exact master equation for open quantum systems

Yu Li, Eric J. Heller

We present a succinct and intuitive derivation of a formally exact master equation for general open quantum systems, without the use of an "inverse" map which was invoked in previous works on formally exact master equations. This formalism is applicable to non-Markovian regimes. We derive a second-order equation of motion for the illustrative spin-boson model at arbitrary temperatures, observing non-exponential decoherence and relaxation. Limiting our generic derivation to zero temperature, we also reproduce the result for the special case of a vacuum bath in Phys. Rev. A 81, 042103 (2010).

Nakajima-Zwanzig versus time-convolutionless master equation for the non-Markovian dynamics of a two-level system

Andrea Smirne, Bassano Vacchini

We consider the exact reduced dynamics of a two-level system coupled to a bosonic reservoir, further obtaining the exact time-convolutionless and Nakajima-Zwanzig non-Markovian equations of motion. The system considered includes the damped and undamped Jaynes-Cummings model. The result is obtained by exploiting an expression of quantum maps in terms of matrices and a simple relation between the time evolution map and the time-convolutionless generator as well as the Nakajima-Zwanzig memory kernel. This nonperturbative treatment shows that each operator contribution in Lindblad form appearing in the exact time-convolutionless master equation is multiplied by a different time-dependent function. Similarly, in the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation each such contribution is convoluted with a different memory kernel. It appears that, depending on the state of the environment, the operator structures of the two sets of equations of motion can exhibit important differences.

Relationship between the adiabatic-following solutions of Bloch equations and the solutions of non-Markovian Pauli-type master equations

G. S. Agarwal

A general derivation of non-Markovian Pauli-type master equations is given for systems interacting with pump and relaxation mechanisms. It is shown that the adiabatic-following solutions of Bloch equations, due to Grischkowski and co-workers, are obtained as a special case from Pauli equations of non-Markovian type. Finally, it is proved that for a two-level system the non-Markovian master equation obtained in the Born approximation is also exact.

Class of exact memory-kernel master equations

Salvatore Lorenzo, Francesco Ciccarello, G. Massimo Palma

A well-known situation in which a non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system $S$ arises is when this is coherently coupled to an auxiliary system $M$ in contact with a Markovian bath. In such cases, while the joint dynamics of $S\text{\ensuremath{-}}M$ is Markovian and obeys a standard (bipartite) Lindblad-type master equation (ME), this is in general not true for the reduced dynamics of $S$. Furthermore, there are several instances (e.g., the dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model) in which a closed ME for the $S$'s state cannot even be worked out. Here, we find a class of bipartite Lindblad-type MEs such that the reduced ME of $S$ can be derived exactly and in a closed form for any initial product state of $S\text{\ensuremath{-}}M$. We provide a detailed microscopic derivation of our result in terms of a mapping between two collision models.

Non-Markovian master equation for interacting qubits coupled to a bosonic bath: analytic form and asymptotic approximation

Tai-Yin Chiu

Non-Markovian dynamics of two interacting two-level qubits coupled to a bosonic bath was previously studied using the quantum-state-diffusion (QSD) equation, where a stochastic state is used to describe the system. In this study, we provide another perspective on this system by deriving the analytic form of the master equation, which describes the system with a reduced density matrix. Then, we validate the master equation by examining entanglement generation and state purity. In addition, with the master equation, we observe the effects from first-order noise and notice that a good asymptotic approximation to the master equation can be made by neglecting the first-order noise.

Exact master equation for an open Jaynes–Cummings system

Akane Watanabe, Hiromichi Nakazato

A master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system interacting with a bosonic reservoir through a conserved quantity is derived analytically without any approximation. The derivation is valid for any initial JC state that has no correlation with the initial reservoir at any temperature and yields a Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan-type master equation with time-dependent coefficients.Several physical quantities of the open JC system are examined and the validity or limit of some of the standard approximations used to derive the master equation is discussed on the basis of the exact results obtained here.
