Abstract

We study bilayer Fractional Quantum Hall State also known as Halperin state. We prove that for any filling fractions (positive rational numbers), there are infinite solutions that imply that infinite topological states are corresponding to any given filling fraction. Our results can apply to any charge vectors.

A matrix model for bilayered quantum Hall systems

Ahmed Jellal, Michael Schreiber

We develop a matrix model to describe bilayered quantum Hall fluids for a series of filling factors. Considering two coupling layers, and starting from a corresponding action, we construct its vacuum configuration at ν = q i K −1 ij q j , where K ij is a 2 × 2 matrix and q i is a vector. Our model allows us to reproduce several well-known wavefunctions. We show that the wavefunction Ψ ( m , m , n ) constructed years ago by Yoshioka, MacDonald and Girvin for the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor and in particular Ψ (3,3,1) at filling can be obtained from our vacuum configuration. The unpolarized Halperin wavefunction and especially that for the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor can also be recovered from our approach. Generalization to more than two layers is straightforward.

A Matrix Model for Bilayered Quantum Hall Systems

Ahmed Jellal, Michael Schreiber

We develop a matrix model to describe bilayered quantum Hall fluids for a series of filling factors. Considering two coupling layers, and starting from a corresponding action, we construct its vacuum configuration at \\nu=q_iK_{ij}^{-1}q_j, where K_{ij} is a 2\\times 2 matrix and q_i is a vector. Our model allows us to reproduce several well-known wave functions. We show that the wave function \\Psi_{(m,m,n)} constructed years ago by Yoshioka, MacDonald and Girvin for the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor {2\\over m+n} and in particular \\Psi_{(3,3,1)} at filling {1\\over 2} can be obtained from our vacuum configuration. The unpolarized Halperin wave function and especially that for the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor {2\\over 5} can also be recovered from our approach. Generalization to more than 2 layers is straightforward.

Edge dynamics in quantum Hall bilayers: Exact results with disorder and parallel fields

J. D. Naud, Leonid P. Pryadko, Shivaji L. Sondhi

We study edge dynamics in the presence of interlayer tunneling, parallel magnetic field, and various types of disorder for two infinite sequences of quantum Hall states in symmetric bilayers. These sequences begin with the 110 and 331 Halperin states and include their fractional descendants at lower filling factors; the former is easily realized experimentally while the latter is a candidate for the experimentally observed quantum Hall state at a total filling factor of 1/2 in bilayers. We discuss the experimentally interesting observables that involve just one chiral edge of the sample and the correlation functions needed for computing them. We present several methods for obtaining exact results in the presence of interactions and disorder that rely on the chiral character of the system. Of particular interest are our results on the 331 state, which suggest that a time-resolved measurement at the edge can be used to discriminate between the 331 and Pfaffian scenarios for the observed quantum Hall state at filling factor 1/2 in realistic double-layer systems.

Fractional quantum Hall bilayers at half filling: Tunneling-driven non-Abelian phase

W. Zhu, Zhao Liu, F. D. M. Haldane +1 more

Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here, we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil ``fingerprint'' evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian (331) Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a ``proof-of-principle'' demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\text{wave}$ pairing states.

Bosonic Halperin (441) Fractional Quantum Hall Effect at Filling Factor ν = 2/5

Tian-Sheng Zeng, Liangdong Hu, Wei Kang Zhu

Quantum Hall effects with multicomponent internal degrees of freedom facilitate the playground of novel emergent topological orders. Here, we explore the correlated topological phases of two-component hardcore bosons at a total filling factor ν = 2/5 in topological lattice models under the interplay of intracomponent and intercomponent repulsions. We give the numerical demonstration of the emergence of Halperin (441) fractional quantum Hall effect based on exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. We elucidate its topological features including the degeneracy of the ground state, fractionally quantized topological Chern number matrix and chiral edge modes.

Halperin ( m′, m, n ) fractional quantum Hall effect in topological flat bands

Tian-Sheng Zeng

The Halperin $({m}^{\ensuremath{'}},m,n)$ fractional quantum Hall effects of two-component quantum particles are studied in topological checkerboard lattice models. Here for $m\ensuremath{\ne}{m}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, we demonstrate the emergence of fractional quantum hall effects with the associated $\mathbf{K}=\left(\begin{array}{cc}m+2& 1\\ 1& m\end{array}\right)$ matrix (even $m=2$ for boson and odd $m=3$ for fermion) in the presence of both strong intercomponent and intracomponent repulsions. Through exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we elucidate their topological fractionalizations, including (i) the $det|\mathbf{K}|=({m}^{2}+2m\ensuremath{-}1)$-fold ground-state degeneracies and (ii) fractionally quantized topological Chern number matrix $\mathbf{C}={\mathbf{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Our flat band model provides a paradigmatic example of a microscopic Hamiltonian featuring fractional quantum Hall effect with partial spinpolarization.
