Novel Quantum Phases of Two-Component Bosons with Pair Hopping in Synthetic Dimension

Abstract

We study two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) bosons with pair hopping interactions in synthetic dimension, for which a feasible experimental scheme on a square optical lattice is also presented. Previous studies have shown that two-component bosons with on-site interspecies interaction can only generate nontrivial interspecies paired superfluid (super-counter-fluidity or pair-superfluid) states. In contrast, apart from interspecies paired superfluid, we reveal two new phases by considering this additional pair hopping interaction. These novel phases are intraspecies paired superfluid (molecular superfluid) and an exotic noninteger Mott insulator which shows a noninteger atom number at each site for each species, but an integer for total atom number.

Phase diagram of the two-component bosonic system with pair hopping in synthetic dimension

Chenrong Liu, Zhi Lin

We systematically study the ground-state phase diagrams and the demixing effect of a two-dimensional two-component bosonic system with pair hopping in synthetic dimension by using the cluster Gutzwiller mean-field method. Our results show that when the interexchange symmetry between the two species is broken, the regions of the super-counter-fluidity state in the phase diagram are dramatically shrunk whenever the on-site pair hopping term is turned on or off. Unexpectedly, the non-integer Mott phase and the molecular superfluid phase predicted in our previous work \citetext{Z. Lin et al., \textcolor{blue}{Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{125}, 245301 (2020)}}, can only exist in such a system that the pair hopping term is opened, and more importantly, its interexchange symmetry must be broken. Moreover, the demixing effect of the two-component bosonic system with synthetic pair hopping interaction has also been studied, and we find that an incompletely demixed state is formed in the system when the strength of the interspecies on-site repulsive interaction is sufficiently large.

Quantum droplets of bosonic mixtures in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Ivan Morera, G. E. Astrakharchik, Polls Martí, Artur +1 more

We demonstrate the existence of quantum droplets in two-component one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chains. The droplets exist for any strength of repulsive intraspecies interactions provided they are balanced by comparable attractive interspecies interactions. The ground-state phase diagram is presented and the different phases are characterized by examining the density profile and off-diagonal one- and two-body correlation functions. A rich variety of phases is found, including atomic superfluid gases, atomic superfluid droplets, pair superfluid droplets, pair superfluid gases, and a Mott-insulator phase. A parameter region prone to be experimentally explored is identified, where the average population per site is lower than three atoms, thus avoiding three-body losses. Finally, the bipartite entanglement of the droplets is found to have a nontrivial dependence on the number of particles.

Quantum phases of two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter ladder

Jian-Dong Chen, Hong-Hao Tu, Ying-Hai Wu +1 more

We study two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter model with two legs. The synthetic magnetic fields for the two types of bosons point to either the same direction or opposite directions. The bosons have hardcore intraspecies interaction such that there can be no more than one boson of the same type on each lattice site. For certain filling factors in the absence of interspecies interaction, each component realizes a vortex Mott insulator with rung current or a Meissner superfluid without rung current. The system undergoes phase transitions to other phases as interspecies interaction is turned on, which are characterized numerically using the density matrix renormalization group method and supplemented with analytical studies when possible. The vortex Mott insulator transits to a gapped Meissner phase without rung current and the Meissner superfluid transits to a gapped vortex phase with rung current. In both cases, we observe gapped spin density wave states that break certain ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetries.

Mixture of scalar bosons and two-color fermions in one dimension: Superfluid-insulator transitions

Richard Giovanni Avella, Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco +1 more

Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of nontrivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These nontrivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\frac{1}{2}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$, with the plus (minus) sign for repulsive (attractive) interactions and $n$ an integer. Far from fermionic half filling, the boson-fermion interaction drives a gapless-gapped transition in the spin sector. Our findings could be observed experimentally in state-of-the-art cold-atom setups.

Pair-Supersolid Phase in a Bilayer System of Dipolar Lattice Bosons

C. Trefzger, C. Menotti, Maciej Lewenstein

The competition between tunneling and interactions in bosonic lattice models generates a whole variety of different quantum phases. While, in the presence of a single species interacting via on site interaction, the phase diagram presents only superfluid or Mott insulating phases, for long-range interactions or multiple species, exotic phases such as supersolid or pair-superfluid appear. In this Letter, we show for the first time that the coexistence of effective multiple species and long-range interactions leads to the formation of a novel pair-supersolid phase, namely, a supersolid of composites. We propose a possible implementation with dipolar bosons in a bilayer two-dimensional optical lattice.

Quantum phase transition of ultracold bosons in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field

Tobias Graß, Kush Saha, K. Sengupta +1 more

We study the Mott phases and the superfluid-insulator transition of two-component ultracold bosons on a square optical lattice in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field, which renders a SU(2)-hopping matrix for the bosons. Using a resummed hopping expansion, we calculate the excitation spectra in the Mott insulating phases and demonstrate that the superfluid-insulator phase boundary displays a nonmonotonic dependence on the gauge-field strength. We also compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the presence of the non-Abelian field and show that they develop peaks at nonzero momenta as the superfluid-insulator transition point is approached from the Mott side. Finally, we study the superfluid phases near the transition and discuss the induced spatial pattern of the superfluid density due to the presence of the non-Abelian gauge potential.
