Abstract

We study the dynamics of vortices with arbitrary topological charges in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates using the Adomian Decomposition Method to solve the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in polar coordinates. The solutions of the vortex equation are expressed in the form of infinite power series. The power series representations are compared with the exact numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the uniform and the harmonic potential, respectively. We find that there is a good agreement between the analytical and the numerical results.

Dynamics of vortices in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

Alexander Klein, Dieter Jaksch, Yanzhi Zhang +1 more

We study the dynamics of vortices in ideal and weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates using a Ritz minimization method to solve the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For different initial vortex configurations we calculate the trajectories of the vortices. We find conditions under which a vortex-antivortex pair annihilates and is created again. For the case of three vortices we show that at certain times two additional vortices may be created, which move through the condensate and annihilate each other again. For a noninteracting condensate this process is periodic, whereas for small interactions the essential features persist, but the periodicity is lost. The results are compared to exact numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation confirming our analytical findings.

Exploring vortex dynamics in the presence of dissipation: Analytical and numerical results

D. Yan, R. Carretero-González, D. J. Frantzeskakis +3 more

In this paper, we examine the dynamical properties of vortices in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of phenomenological dissipation, used as a basic model for the effect of finite temperatures. In the context of this so-called dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii model, we derive analytical results for the motion of single vortices and, importantly, for vortex dipoles, which have become very relevant experimentally. Our analytical results are shown to compare favorably to the full numerical solution of the dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation where appropriate. We also present results on the stability of vortices and vortex dipoles, revealing good agreement between numerical and analytical results for the internal excitation eigenfrequencies, which extends even beyond the regime of validity of this equation for cold atoms.

Vortex stability in interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

Ajay Srinivasan, Aaron Wirthwein, Stephan Haas

We study the stability of vortices in a binary system of Bose-Einstein condensat es, with their wave functions modeled by a set of coupled, time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Beginning with an effective two-dimensional system, we identify miscible and immiscible regimes characterized by the inter- and intra-atomic interactions and the initial configuration of the system. We then consider a binary system of Bose-Einstein condensates placed in a rotating harmonic trap and study the single united vortex state in this system. We derive an approximate form for the energy of a single united vortex in the binary system and the critical angular velocity for the global stability of a vortex at the center of the trap. We also compute the metastability onset angular velocity for the local stability of a vortex at the center of the trap. Numerical solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equations support these expressions. These rotational results inform us of a novel bimodal formation within the miscible regime of the binary condensate system. We thus demonstrate the nontrivial aspects of vortex stability in interacting binary Bose-Einstein condensates as a result of their nonlinear interactions.

Solitary Vortex Dynamics of 2D Bose-Einstein Condensates with Higher-Order Nonlinear Interactions

Huiping Ou, Zhijie Chen, Ying Wang +3 more

For study of Continuous matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates in nonlinear and quantum atom optics, the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) is chosen as the reliable model for studying the dynamics of vortices in the framework of mean-field theory. In related problems in several recent studies showing that higher-order interrelationships are an indispensable component of the GPE even at the mean-field level, by numerically estimating the vortex dynamics variables. In this paper, derive the vortex soliton solutions using the variational method and investigate the effect of higher-order nonlinear corrections on the behavior of the vortex dynamics, which are shown to have an important impact on the vortex dynamics behavior.

Exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for stable vortex modes in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Lei Wu, Lu Li, Jie-Fang Zhang +3 more

We construct exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for solitary vortices, and approximate ones for fundamental solitons, in two-dimensional models of Bose-Einstein condensates with a spatially modulated nonlinearity of either sign and a harmonic trapping potential. The number of vortex-soliton (VS) modes is determined by the discrete energy spectrum of a related linear Schr\"odinger equation. The VS families in the system with the attractive and repulsive nonlinearity are mutually complementary. Stable VSs with vorticity $S\ensuremath{\geqslant}2$ and those corresponding to higher-order radial states are reported, in the case of the attraction and repulsion, respectively.

A Method for the Dynamics of Vortices in a Bose-Einstein Condensate: Analytical Equations of the Trajectories of Phase Singularities

Sergi de María-García, Albert Ferrando, J. Alberto Conejero +2 more

We present a method to study the dynamics of a quasi-two dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate which initially contains several vortices at arbitrary locations. The method allows one to find the analytical solution for the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate in a homogeneous medium and in a parabolic trap, for the ideal non-interacting case. Secondly, the method allows one to obtain algebraic equations for the trajectories of the position of phase singularities present in the initial condensate along with time (the vortex lines). With these equations, one can predict quantities of interest, such as the time at which a vortex and an antivortex contained in the initial condensate will merge. For the homogeneous case, this method was introduced in the context of photonics. Here, we adapt it to the context of Bose-Einstein condensates, and we extend it to the trapped case for the first time. Also, we offer numerical simulations in the non-linear case, for repulsive and attractive interactions. We use a numerical split-step simulation of the non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation to determine how these trajectories and quantities of interest are changed by the interactions. We illustrate the method with several simple cases of interest, both in the homogeneous and parabolically trapped systems.
