Abstract

We study the statistics of energy fluctuations in a three-level quantum system subject to a sequence of projective quantum measurements. We check that, as expected, the quantum Jarzynski equality holds provided that the initial state is thermal. The latter condition is trivially satisfied for two-level systems, while this is generally no longer true for N-level systems, with N > 2 . Focusing on three-level systems, we discuss the occurrence of a unique energy scale factor β eff that formally plays the role of an effective inverse temperature in the Jarzynski equality. To this aim, we introduce a suitable parametrization of the initial state in terms of a thermal and a non-thermal component. We determine the value of β eff for a large number of measurements and study its dependence on the initial state. Our predictions could be checked experimentally in quantum optics.

Nonequilibrium quantum-heat statistics under stochastic projective measurements

Stefano Gherardini, Lorenzo Buffoni, Matthias M. Müller +4 more

In this paper we aim at characterizing the effect of stochastic fluctuations on the distribution of the energy exchanged by a quantum system with the external environment under sequences of quantum measurements performed at random times. Both quenched and annealed averages are considered. The information about fluctuations is encoded in the quantum-heat probability density function, or equivalently in its characteristic function, whose general expression for a quantum system with arbitrary Hamiltonian is derived. We prove that, when a stochastic protocol of measurements is applied, the quantum Jarzynski equality is obeyed. Therefore, the fluctuation relation is robust against the presence of randomness in the times intervals between measurements. Then, for the paradigmatic case of a two-level system, we analytically characterize the quantum-heat transfer. Particular attention is devoted to the limit of large number of measurements and to the effects caused by the stochastic fluctuations. The relation with the stochastic Zeno regime is also discussed.

Generalized energy measurements and quantum work compatible with fluctuation theorems

Kosuke Ito, Peter Talkner A, B. Prasanna Venkatesh +1 more

The probability densities of work that can be exerted on a quantum system initially staying in thermal equilibrium are constrained by the fluctuation relations of Jarzynski and Crooks, when the work is determined by two projective energy measurements. We investigate the question whether these fluctuation relations may still hold if one employs generalized energy measurements rather than projective ones. Restricting ourselves to a class of universal measurements which are independent of several details of the system on which the work is done, we find sets of necessary and sufficient conditions for the Jarzynski equality and the Crooks relation. The Jarzynski equality requires perfect accuracy for the initial measurement, while the final one can be erroneous. On the other hand, the Crooks relation can only tolerate a depolarizing channel as a deviation from the projective measurement for systems with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. For a separable infinite-dimensional space only projective measurements are compatible with the Crooks relation. The results we have obtained significantly extend those of Venkatesh, Watanabe, and Talkner [New J. Phys. 16, 015032 (2014)] as well as avoid some errors present there.

Energy exchange statistics and fluctuation theorem for nonthermal asymptotic states

Santiago Hernández-Gómez, Francesco Poggiali, Paola Cappellaro +4 more

Energy exchange statistics between two bodies at different thermal equilibria obey the Jarzynski-Wójcik fluctuation theorem. The corresponding energy scale factor is the difference of the inverse temperatures associated to the bodies at equilibrium. In this work, we consider a dissipative quantum dynamics leading the quantum system towards a possibly nonthermal, asymptotic state. To generalize the Jarzynski-Wójcik theorem to nonthermal states, we identify a sufficient condition I for the existence of an energy scale factor η^{*} that is unique, finite, and time independent, such that the characteristic function of the energy exchange distribution becomes identically equal to 1 for any time. This η^{*} plays the role of the difference of inverse temperatures. We discuss the physical interpretation of the condition I, showing that it amounts to an almost complete memory loss of the initial state. The robustness of our results against quantifiable deviations from the validity of I is evaluated by experimental studies on a single nitrogen-vacancy center subjected to a sequence of laser pulses and dissipation.

Transient quantum fluctuation theorems and generalized measurements

B. Prasanna Venkatesh, Gentaro Watanabe A, Peter Talkner A

The transient quantum fluctuation theorems of Crooks and Jarzynski restrict and relate the statistics of work performed in forward and backward forcing protocols. So far, these theorems have been obtained under the assumption that the work is determined by two projective energy measurements, one at the end, and the other one at the beginning of each run of the protocol. We found that one can replace these two projective measurements only by special error-free generalized energy measurements with pairs of tailored, protocol-dependent post-measurement states that satisfy detailed balance-like relations. For other generalized measurements, the Crooks relation is typically not satisfied. For the validity of the Jarzynski equality, it is sufficient that the first energy measurements are error-free and the post-measurement states form a complete orthonormal set of elements in the Hilbert space of the considered system. Additionally, the effects of the second energy measurements must have unit trace. We illustrate our results by an example of a two-level system for different generalized measurements.

Fluctuations of path-dependent thermodynamic quantities in open quantum systems via two-point system-only measurements

Alessandra Colla, Andrea Smirne, Heinz-Peter Breuer +1 more

We propose a method to evaluate general thermodynamic fluctuations in open quantum systems, based on performing a two-point measurement scheme on the system using dynamics-dependent thermodynamic observables. Our approach allows one to obtain exact equalities for fluctuations of path-dependent thermodynamic quantities such as work and heat, and to isolate correction factors to Jarzynski's equality, requiring only access to the system degrees of freedom. This framework is flexible and can be applied to the limiting case of closed systems, recovering previous, yet seemingly contradictory, results from the literature. Moreover, the formalism admits a straightforward extension to strongly coupled open quantum systems. We investigate the effect of specific dynamical classes on the fluctuation relations, and show that the pure decoherence case is particularly special, as it deterministically does not contain any heat contribution and thus constitutes a class of open system dynamics for which the Jarzynski equality for work fluctuations is identically true at any coupling strength. Finally, we look explicitly at the shape and size of the correction factors to Jarzynski's equality for a qubit undergoing phase covariant dynamics, both in the weakly-coupled regime and in the deep non-Markovian regime.

Quantum heat fluctuation theorem

P. S. Pal, Sourabh Lahiri, A. M. Jayannavar

Two fundamental ingredients play a decisive role in the foundations of fluctuation relations-the principle of micro-reversibility and the fact that thermal equilibrium is described by Gibbs canonical ensemble. Here we investigate the statistics of heat exchange between quantum finite system coupled to two reservoirs at temperatures Th and Tc in the transient regime. We have obtained an analytical result for quantum heat fluctuation theorem in the transient regime. We consider a composite system consisting of two different heat baths at different temperatures with an intervening medium(system of interest). The system of interest is driven by an external protocol. For our study we invoke von Neumann two point projective measurement in quantum mechanics. Our result is a generalisation of Jarzynski-Wojcik heat fluctuation theorem.
