We review the experimental findings on scattering resonances in molecular collisions occurring in the energy domain equivalent to temperatures of a few Kelvin. We discuss the conditions required to observe shape (or orbiting) and Feshbach resonances, the crucial factor being in all cases the number of partial waves involved in the process. This implies operating with supersonic beams with matched and low velocities, high velocity resolution and low beam-intersection angle. This is exemplified for elastic, inelastic and reactive collisions, where different strategies, thence experimental arrangements, are used. We review the first observation of resonances in elastic collisions from the 1970s and the recent results in inelastic and reactive collisions. The most striking result is obtained for O2 + para-H2 inelastic collisions for which rotational excitation occurs through a pure quantum process, yielding a well-resolved structure in the integral cross section assigned to definite well-separated partial waves.
Atom-molecule collisions in helium--helium--alkali-metal triatomic systems at cold energies are studied using the adiabatic hyperspherical representation. We consider the elastic collision processes $^{4}\mathrm{He}X+^{4}\mathrm{He}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}\mathrm{He}X+^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{4}\mathrm{He}_{2}+X\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}\mathrm{He}_{2}+X$, as well as the reactive collision processes $^{4}\mathrm{He}X+^{4}\mathrm{He}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rightleftharpoons}^{4}\mathrm{He}_{2}+X$, where
X is one of the bosonic alkali-metal atoms:
7Li,
23Na,
39K,
85Rb, or
133Cs. The elastic and reactive collision cross sections are calculated at nonzero collision energies by including not only zero atom-molecule relative angular momentum,
L=0, processes but also
L>0 processes. The total cross section for $^{4}\mathrm{He}X+^{4}\mathrm{He}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}\mathrm{He}X+^{4}\mathrm{He}$ is found to increase with the scattering length between
4He and
X, while the other collision processes are not found to have any systematic dependence on the alkali-metal species
X.
Cold chemical reactions between laser-cooled Ca^+ ions and Rb atoms were studied in an ion-atom hybrid trap. Reaction rate constants were determined in the range of collision energies /k_B = 20 mK-20 K. The lowest energies were achieved in experiments using single localized Ca^+ ions. Product branching ratios were studied using resonant-excitation mass spectrometry. The dynamics of the reactive processes in this system (non-radiative and radiative charge transfer as well as radiative association leading to the formation of CaRb^+ molecular ions) have been analyzed using high-level quantum-chemical calculations of the potential energy curves of CaRb^+ and quantum-scattering calculations for the radiative channels. For the present low-energy scattering experiments, it is shown that the energy dependence of the reaction rate constants is governed by long-range interactions in line with the classical Langevin model, but their magnitude is determined by short-range non-adiabatic and radiative couplings which only weakly depend on the asymptotic energy. The quantum character of the collisions is predicted to manifest itself in the occurrence of narrow shape resonances at well-defined collision energies. The present results highlight both universal and system-specific phenomena in cold ion-neutral reactive collisions.
