Mechanical analog of quantum bradyons and tachyons

Abstract

We present a mechanical analog of a quantum wave-particle duality: a vibrating string threaded through a freely moving bead or "masslet." For small string amplitudes, the particle movement is governed by a set of nonlinear dynamical equations that couple the wave field to the masslet dynamics. Under specific conditions, the particle achieves a regime of transparency in which the field and the particle's dynamics appear decoupled. In that special case, the particle conserves its momentum and a guiding wave obeying a Klein-Gordon equation, with real or imaginary mass, emerges. Similar to the double-solution theory of de Broglie, this guiding wave is locked in phase with a modulating group wave comoving with the particle. Interestingly, both subsonic and supersonic particles can fall into a quantum regime as is the case with the slower-than-light bradyons and hypothetical, faster-than-light tachyons of particle physics.

Wave-particle duality coming from a bead oscillator in an elastic medium, theoretical study and quantum similarities

Christian Borghesi

We introduce a dual wave-particle macroscopic system, where a bead oscillator oscillates in an elastic medium which obeys the Klein-Gordon equation. This theoretical system is mostly inspired by bouncing droplets experiments and bead sliding on a vibrating string experiments. This system is studied using a common and simple mathematical formalism. We compute the motion equation of the bead as well as the wave equation of the system. We introduce the effective velocity of the bead with respect to the elastic medium and the wave $ψ$, created by the bead, which modulates the natural wave of the medium. Provided some conditions, $ψ$ obeys an equation analogous to the free Schrödinger equation. In the case of linear and spherical cavities, the particle-like characteristics of the bead, expressed with its effective velocity, are proportional to the corresponding wave-like characteristics of the system. A mechanical analog of Bohr’s atom based on de Broglie’s double-solution approach

P. Jamet, Aurélien Drezet

Motivated by recent developments of hydrodynamical quantum mechanical analogs [J. W. M. Bush, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 47, 269-292 (2015)], we provide a relativistic model for a classical particle coupled to a scalar wave field through a holonomic constraint. In the presence of an external Coulomb field, we define a regime where the particle is guided by the wave in a way similar to the old de Broglie phase-wave proposal. Moreover, this dualistic mechanical analog of the quantum theory is reminiscent of the double-solution approach suggested by de Broglie in 1927 and is able to reproduce the Bohr-Sommerfeld semiclassical quantization formula for an electron moving in an atom.

On Reality of Tachyonic de Broglie Waves

Rajat Kumar Pradhan, LAMBODAR PRASAD SINGH

We investigate the tachyonic nature of the de Broglie matter waves associated with a free quantum object to show that granting reality to them would lend completeness to the quantum description of reality. Basing on the robustness of the well known Einstein-de Broglie reciprocal relation between the phase and the particle velocities, we extend the concept of complementarity to them and thereby propose a complementary relation between a bradyon and its corresponding tachyon (i.e. the associated matter wave) to endow the tachyons with a degree of reality, at least on par with the bradyons, within the current framework of quantum physics and extended relativity. The duality is used to argue that because of the observed localised nature of bradyons, tachyons should always be pervasive or global in character and thus, there can be no point-like tachyons. A common misconception regarding the nonrelativistic limit of the Einstein-de Broglie relation is pointed out and the consequent error of long standing is remedied.

De Brogile Waves and Pseudotachyonic Relativity

Luís Filipe T. Dias Ferreira

Despite their author, de Broglie waves for ordinary (bradyonic) particles are often considered without physical signication, mainly because they are tachyonic. I revisit some of de Broglie’s original ideas and discuss the standard approach to the problem, the \wave packet overlapped to a de Broglie wave. Using Pseudotachyonic Theory, it’s easy to conclude that this tachyonic wave actually exists but may only be detected with the same velocity of its associated particle. Furthermore, in what comes to \dualities, it appears that wave and particle are not two aspects of the same thing but instead two different though intimately correlated entities. These reections concern the physical nature of de Broglie waves, including particles \internal vibration, and lead to the premises of a new general Field Theory. Relativistic Hydrodynamic Interpretation of de Broglie Matter Waves

Yuval Dagan

Abstract We present a classical hydrodynamic analog of free relativistic quantum particles inspired by de Broglie's pilot wave theory and recent developments in hydrodynamic quantum analogs. The proposed model couples a periodically forced Klein-Gordon equation with a nonrelativistic particle dynamic equation. The coupled equations may represent both quantum particles and classical particles driven by the gradients of locally excited Faraday waves. Exact stationary solutions of the coupled system reveal a highly nonlinear mechanism responsible for the self-propulsion of free particles, leading to the onset of unsteady motion. Although the model is essentially nonrelativistic, a stabilizing mechanism for any particle traveling close to the wave signaling speed emerges through the coupling with the wavefield. Consequently, inline particle oscillations comparable to de Broglie's wavelength formula are realized through this fully-classical model, suggesting a new classical interpretation for the motion of relativistic quantum particles.
