We elaborate a simple classification scheme of all rank-5 SU(2) spin rotational symmetric tensors according to (i) the onsite physical spin
S, (ii) the local Hilbert space ${V}^{\ensuremath{\bigotimes}4}$ of the four virtual (composite) spins attached to each site, and (iii) the irreducible representations of the
C4v point group of the square lattice. We apply our scheme to draw a complete list of all SU(2)-symmetric translationally and rotationally invariant projected entangled pair states (PEPS) with bond dimension $D\ensuremath{\le}6$. All known SU(2)-symmetric PEPS on the square lattice are recovered and simple generalizations are provided in some cases. More generally, to each of our symmetry class can be associated a $(\mathcal{D}\ensuremath{-}1)\text{-dimensional}$ manifold of spin liquids (potentially) preserving lattice symmetries and defined in terms of
D-independent tensors of a given bond dimension
D. In addition, generic (low-dimensional) families of PEPS explicitly breaking either (i) particular point-group lattice symmetries (lattice nematics) or (ii) time-reversal symmetry (chiral spin liquids) or (iii) SU(2) spin rotation symmetry down to
U(1) (spin nematics or N\'eel antiferromagnets) can also be constructed. We apply this framework to search for new topological chiral spin liquids characterized by well-defined chiral edge modes, as revealed by their entanglement spectrum. In particular, we show how the symmetrization of a double-layer PEPS leads to a chiral topological state with a gapless edge described by a
SU(2)2 Wess-Zumino-Witten model.
We generalize the construction of the spin-1/2 SU(2) resonating valence bond (RVB) state to the case of the self-conjugate
6 representation of SU(4). As for the case of SU(2) [J.-Y. Chen and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B 97, 161107(R) (2018)], we use the projected entangled pair state (PEPS) formalism to derive a simple (two-dimensional) family of generalized SU(4) RVB states on the square lattice. We show that, when longer-range SU(4)-singlet bonds are included, a local gauge symmetry is broken down from U(1) to
Z2, leading to the emergence of a short-range spin liquid. Evidence for the topological nature of this spin liquid is provided by the investigation of the Renyi entanglement entropy of infinitely long cylinders and of the modular matrices. Relevance to microscopic models and experiments of ultracold atoms is discussed.
Frustration in quantum spin systems promote a variety of novel quantum phases. An important example is the frustrated spin-1 model on the square lattice with the nearest-neighbor bilinear (
J1) and biquadratic (
K1) interactions. We provide strong evidence for a nematic spin liquid phase in a range of
K1/J1 near the SU(3)-symmetric point (
J1=K1), based on the linear flavor-wave theory and extensive density matrix renormalization group calculation. This phase displays no spin dipolar or quadrupolar order, preserves translational symmetry but spontaneously breaks
C4 lattice rotational symmetry, and possesses fluctuations peaked at the wave vector $(\ensuremath{\pi},2\ensuremath{\pi}/3)$. The spin excitation gap drops rapidly with system size and appears to be gapless, and the nematic order is attributed to the dominant $(\ensuremath{\pi},2\ensuremath{\pi}/3)$ fluctuations. Our results provide a novel mechanism for electronic nematic order and, more generally, open up a new avenue to explore frustration-induced exotic ground states.
Quantum spin liquids can be faithfully represented and efficiently characterized within the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS). Guided by extensive exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations, we construct an optimized symmetric PEPS for a SU(3)_{1} chiral spin liquid on the square lattice. Characteristic features are revealed by the entanglement spectrum (ES) on an infinitely long cylinder. In all three Z_{3} sectors, the level counting of the linear dispersing modes is in full agreement with SU(3)_{1} Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory prediction. Special features in the ES are shown to be in correspondence with bulk anyonic correlations, indicating a fine structure in the holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Possible universal properties of topological SU(N)_{k} chiral PEPS are discussed.
Dirac spin liquids represent a class of highly-entangled quantum phases in two dimensional Mott insulators, featuring exotic properties such as critical correlation functions and absence of well-defined low energy quasi-particles. Existing numerical works suggest that the spin-orbital
SU(4) symmetric Kugel-Khomskii model of Mott insulators on the honeycomb lattice realizes a Dirac spin-orbital liquid, described at low energy by
(2+1)d quantum electrodynamics (QED
3) with
Nf=8 Dirac fermions. We generalize methods previously developed for
SU(2) spin systems to analyze the symmetry properties and stability of the Dirac spin-orbital liquid. We conclude that the standard Dirac state in the
SU(4) honeycomb system, based on a simple parton mean-field ansatz, is intrinsically unstable at low energy due to the existence of a monopole perturbation that is allowed by physical symmetries and relevant under renormalization group flow. We propose two plausible alternative scenarios compatible with existing numerics. In the first scenario, we propose an alternative
U(1) Dirac spin-orbital liquid, which is similar to the standard one except for its monopole symmetry quantum numbers. This alternative
U(1) state represents a stable gapless phase. In the second scenario, we start from the standard
U(1) Dirac liquid and Higgs the
U(1) gauge symmetry down to
Z4. The resulting
Z4 Dirac spin-orbital liquid is stable. We also discuss the continuous quantum phase transitions from the
Z4 Dirac liquids to conventional symmetry-breaking orders, described by the QED
3 theory with
Nf=8 supplemented with a critical charge-
4 Higgs field. We discuss possible ways to distinguish these scenarios in numerics. We also extend previous calculations of the quantum anomalies of QED
3 and match with generalized lattice Lieb-Schultz-Mattis constraints.
Spontaneous discrete symmetry breaking can be described in the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS) by linearly superposing local tensors belonging to two (or more) symmetry classes of tensors. This is illustrated in the case of a frustrated spin-1 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, which hosts a nematic spin liquid spontaneously breaking lattice $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$-rotation symmetry. A superposition of SU(2)-symmetric PEPS tensors belonging to two irreducible representations of the lattice point group is shown to capture accurately the properties of the nematic phase, as shown from a comparison to exact diagonalizations and density matrix renormalization group results.
