Quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator based on a modified Bateman Lagrangian

Abstract

An approach to quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) is developed on the basis of a modified Bateman Lagrangian (MBL); thereby some quantum mechanical aspects of the DHO are clarified. We treat the energy operator for the DHO, in addition to the Hamiltonian operator that is determined from the MBL and corresponds to the total energy of the system. It is demonstrated that the energy eigenvalues of the DHO exponentially decrease with time and that transitions between the energy eigenstates occur in accordance with the Schr\"odinger equation. Also, it is pointed out that a new critical parameter discriminates different behaviors of transition probabilities.

A new approach to the quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator

Matthew J. Blacker, David L. Tilbrook

In this paper, a new approach for constructing Lagrangians for driven and undriven linearly damped systems is proposed, by introducing a redefined time coordinate and an associated coordinate transformation to ensure that the resulting Lagrangian satisfies the Helmholtz conditions. The approach is applied to canonically quantize the damped harmonic oscillator and although it predicts an energy spectrum that decays at the same rate to previous models, unlike those approaches it recovers the classical critical damping condition, which determines transitions between energy eigenstates, and is therefore consistent with the correspondence principle. It is also demonstrated how to apply the procedure to a driven damped harmonic oscillator.

Quantum damped oscillator I: dissipation and resonances

Chruscinski, D, Jurkowski, J

Quantization of a damped harmonic oscillator leads to so called Bateman's dual system. The corresponding Bateman's Hamiltonian, being a self-adjoint operator, displays the discrete family of complex eigenvalues. We show that they correspond to the poles of energy eigenvectors and the corresponding resolvent operator when continued to the complex energy plane. Therefore, the corresponding generalized eigenvectors may be interpreted as resonant states which are responsible for the irreversible quantum dynamics of a damped harmonic oscillator.

Quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator

Mohammed Serhan, M. Abusini, Ahmed Al-Jamel +2 more

In this work, a suitable Hamiltonian that describes the damped harmonic oscillator is constructed. Besides, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for this dissipative system is written and the action function is obtained. Then, the system is quantized using two methods: the WKB approximation and the canonical quantization. In addition, evolution of the probability density is plotted at different times, and it is observed that the width of these densities decreases with time. The average energy of the system is also calculated and found to decrease with time.

Exact evolution of the generalized damped harmonic oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Hichem Choutri

In this paper we use the algebraic and the invariant method to study the time-dependent damped harmonic oscillator from classical and quantum points of view. The solution of the classical equation of motion and the wavefunction solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation are found explicitly. We show that the original time-dependent quantum-mechanical problem is completely related to the well known time-independent harmonic oscillator. In addition, we elucidate the intimate connection between the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) and the generalized harmonic oscillator (GHO). More importantly, the evolution of the states of the DHO cannot be cyclic, in contradistinction with the states of the GHO. Explicit expressions for both the dynamical and the geometric angles and phases are deduced in the adiabatic limit. The coherent states describing the invariant-angle variables of the classical DHO are constructed; they allow us to recover the classical evolution and invariant from the quantum evolution.

A note on a classical dynamical system and its quantization

Fabio Bagarello

In a recent paper a slightly modified version of the Bateman system, originally proposed to describe a damped harmonic oscillator, was proposed. This system is really different from the Bateman’s one, in the sense that this latter cannot be recovered for any choice of its parameters. In this paper we consider this system and we show that, at a quantum level, it is not necessarily dissipative. In particular we show that the Hamiltonian of the system, when quantized, produces different behaviors, depending on some relations between its parameters. In fact, it gives rise to either a two dimensional (standard) harmonic oscillator, or to two independent oscillators, one of which is again standard , and a second one which is an inverted oscillator. The two cases are analyzed in terms of bosonic or pseudo-bosonic ladder operators, and the appearance of distributions for the inverted oscillator is commented.
