Abstract

The Kondo-Heinsberg chain is an interesting model of a strongly correlated system which has a broad superconducting state with pair-density wave (PDW) order. Some of us have recently proposed that this PDW state is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state, and the gapped spin sector of the model supports Majorana zero modes. In this paper, we reexamine this problem using a combination of numeric and analytic methods. In extensive density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we find no evidence of a topological ground state degeneracy or the previously proposed Majorana zero modes in the PDW phase of this model. This result motivated us to reexamine the original arguments for the existence of the Majorana zero modes. A careful analysis of the effective continuum field theory of the model shows that the Hilbert space of the spin sector of the theory does not contain any single Majorana fermion excitations. This analysis shows that the PDW state of the doped 1D Kondo-Heisenberg model is not an SPT with Majorana zero modes.

Topological Pair-Density-Wave Superconducting States

Gil Young Cho, Rodrigo Soto-Garrido, Eduardo Fradkin

We show that the pair-density-wave (PDW) superconducting state emergent in extended Heisenberg-Hubbard models in two-leg ladders is topological in the presence of an Ising spin symmetry and supports a Majorana zero mode (MZM) at an open boundary and at a junction with a uniform d-wave one-dimensional superconductor. Similarly to a conventional finite-momentum paired state, the order parameter of the PDW state is a charge-2e field with finite momentum. However, the order parameter here is a quartic electron operator and conventional mean-field theory cannot be applied to study this state. We use bosonization to show that the 1D PDW state has a MZM at a boundary. This superconducting state is an exotic topological phase supporting Majorana fermions with finite-momentum pairing fields and charge-4e superconductivity.

Evidence for interior-gap pair-density-wave state in Kondo-Heisenberg chains

Yuto Hirose, Shunsuke C. Furuya, Yasuhiro Tada

Interior-gap superconductivity has long been discussed as an exotic paired state in the presence of Fermi-surface mismatch, but its realization in canonical strongly correlated models has remained elusive. Here we present evidence that the superconducting phase of one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg models realizes an interior-gap pair-density-wave (PDW) state generated by strong correlations. Combining infinite density-matrix-renormalization-group (iDMRG) and finite DMRG calculations for $S=1/2$ and $S=3/2$ chains, we show that the PDW correlation is the dominant bulk superconducting correlation in the spin-gapped regime and that the momentum distribution function $n(k)$ exhibits a reconstructed structure characteristic of interior-gap physics. In particular, while the feature in $n(k)$ for the $S=1/2$ chain is only hump-like, the corresponding structure in the $S=3/2$ chain develops into a clear dip, strongly supporting the interpretation in terms of an interior-gap-like dip structure. Unlike conventional interior-gap scenarios based on a mismatch between preexisting Fermi surfaces, the present system starts from a single bare conduction-electron Fermi surface, and the additional low-energy single-particle structure emerges dynamically together with the dominant PDW correlation through the Kondo coupling. Finite DMRG data further demonstrate that boundary effects can substantially modify real-space correlations in this gapless one-dimensional system, making a direct thermodynamic-limit calculation essential for identifying the intrinsic bulk momentum structure and the dominant correlation channel.

Haldane phase in one-dimensional topological Kondo insulators

Alejandro Mezio, Alejandro M. Lobos, A. Dobry +1 more

We investigate the ground-state properties of a recently proposed model for a topological Kondo insulator in one dimension (i.e., the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model) by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The nonstandard Kondo interaction in this model is different from the usual (i.e., local) Kondo interaction in that the localized spins couple to the ``$p$-wave'' spin density of conduction electrons, inducing a topologically nontrivial insulating ground state. Based on the analysis of the charge- and spin-excitation gaps, the string order parameter, and the spin profile in the ground state, we show that, at half filling and low energies, the system is in the Haldane phase and hosts topologically protected spin-1/2 end states. Beyond its intrinsic interest as a useful ``toy model'' to understand the effects of strong correlations on topological insulators, we show that the $p$-wave Kondo-Heisenberg model could be experimentally implemented in $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{band}$ optical lattices loaded with ultracold Fermi gases.

Quantum phases of a one-dimensional Majorana-Bose-Hubbard model

Ananda Roy, Johannes Hauschild, Frank Pollmann

Majorana zero modes (MZM-s) occurring at the edges of a one-dimensional (1D), $p$-wave, spinless superconductor, in the absence of fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, are quintessential examples of topologically protected zero-energy modes occurring at the edges of 1D symmetry-protected topological phases. In this work, we numerically investigate the fate of the topological phase in the presence of phase fluctuations using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. To that end, we consider a one-dimensional array of MZM-s on mesoscopic superconducting islands at zero temperature. Cooper-pair and MZM-assisted single-electron tunneling, together with finite charging energy of the mesoscopic islands, give rise to a rich phase diagram of this model. We show that the system can be in either a Mott-insulating phase, a Luttinger liquid (LL) phase of Cooper pairs, or a second gapless phase. In contrast to the LL of Cooper pairs, this second phase is characterized by nonlocal string correlation functions which decay algebraically due to gapless charge-$e$ excitations. The three phases are separated from each other by phase transitions of either Kosterlitz-Thouless or Ising type. Using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, we map the system to a generalized Bose-Hubbard model with two types of hopping and use DMRG to analyze the different phases and the phase transitions.

Pair-Density-Wave Correlations in the Kondo-Heisenberg Model

Erez Berg, Eduardo Fradkin, Steven Allan Kivelson

We show, using density-matrix renormalization-group calculations complemented by field-theoretic arguments, that the spin-gapped phase of the one dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model exhibits quasi-long-range superconducting correlations only at a nonzero momentum. The local correlations in this phase resemble those of the pair-density-wave state which was recently proposed to describe the phenomenology of the striped ordered high-temperature superconductor La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO₄, in which the spin, charge, and superconducting orders are strongly intertwined.

Topological phase transition and the effect of Hubbard interactions on the one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator

Jason C. Pillay, Ian P. McCulloch

The effect of a local Kondo coupling and Hubbard interaction on the topological phase of the one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator (TKI) is numerically investigated using the infinite matrix-product state density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. The ground state of the TKI is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by inversion symmetry. It is found that on its own, the Hubbard interaction that tends to force fermions into a one-charge per site order is insufficient to destroy the SPT phase. However, when the local Kondo Hamiltonian term that favors a topologically trivial ground state with a one-charge per site order is introduced, the Hubbard interaction assists in the destruction of the SPT phase. This topological phase transition occurs in the charge sector where the correlation length of the charge excitation diverges while the correlation length of the spin excitation remains finite. The critical exponents, central charge, and the phase diagram separating the SPT phase from the topologically trivial phase are presented.
