A fluctuation theorem for Floquet quantum master equations

Abstract

Abstract We present a fluctuation theorem for Floquet quantum master equations. This is a detailed version of the famous Gallavotti–Cohen theorem. In contrast to the latter theorem, which involves the probability distribution of the total heat current, the former involves the joint probability distribution of positive and negative heat currents and can be used to derive the latter. A quantum two-level system driven by a periodic external field is used to verify this result.

Periodically driven quantum open systems: Tutorial

Robert Alicki, David Gelbwaser-Klimovsky, Gershon Kurizki

We present a short derivation and discussion of the master equation for an open quantum system weakly coupled to a heat bath and then its generalization to the case of with periodic external driving based on the Floquet theory. Further, a single heat bath is replaced by several ones. We present also the definition of heat currents which satisfies the second law of thermodynamics and apply the general results to a simple model of periodically modulated qubit.

Heat transport in driven quantum systems: Comparison between the Floquet-Redfield equation and the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis

Luca Magazzù, Christoforus Dimas Satrya, Aleksandr S. Strelnikov +2 more

We provide a comprehensive study of heat transport in periodically driven quantum systems using a master equation approach in the Floquet basis. Starting from the exact, formal expressions, we obtain, within the weak coupling regime of system-bath coupling, a generalized Floquet-Redfield master equation which does not involve Markovian or secular approximations and the corresponding formula for the heat current. From this approach we derive the standard, full secular master equation. Moreover, we present a master equation for the driven spin-boson model in the instantaneous eigenbasis. The different approaches are compared by applying them to the steady-state heat transport in the driven spin-boson model. An analytical solution is provided for the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis which reproduces the numerics and explains the features of the heat current as a function of the drive parameters.

Heat and work in Markovian quantum master equations: concepts, fluctuation theorems, and computations

Fei Liu

Markovian quantum master equations (MQMEs) were established nearly half a century ago. They have often been used in the study of irreversible thermodynamics. However, the previous results were mainly concerned about ensemble averages; the stochastic thermodynamics of these systems went unnoticed for a very long time. This situation remained unchanged until a variety of fluctuation theorems in classical and quantum regimes were found in the past two decades. In this paper, we systematically summarize the current understanding on the stochastic heat and work in MQMEs using two distinct strategies. One strategy is to treat the system and its surrounding heat bath as a closed quantum system, to suppose that the evolution of the composite system is unitary under a time-dependent total Hamiltonian and to define the heat and work as the changes in energy by applying two energy measurements scheme to the composite system. The other strategy is to unravel these MQMEs into random quantum jump trajectories (QJTs) and to define the stochastic heat and work along the individual trajectories. Many important physical concepts, mathematical techniques, and fluctuation theorems at different descriptive levels are given in as detailed a manner as possible. We also use concrete models to illustrate these results.

Test of fluctuation theorems in non-Markovian open quantum systems

Tatsuro Kawamoto, Naomichi Hatano

We study fluctuation theorems for open quantum systems with a non-Markovian heat bath using the approach of quantum master equations and examine the physical quantities that appear in those fluctuation theorems. The approach of Markovian quantum master equations to the fluctuation theorems was developed by Esposito and Mukamel [Phys. Rev. E 73, 046129 (2006)]. We show that their discussion can be formally generalized to the case of a non-Markovian heat bath when the local system is linearly connected to a Gaussian heat bath with the spectrum distribution of the Drude form. We found by numerically simulating the spin-boson model in non-Markovian regime that the "detailed balance" condition is well satisfied except in a strongly nonequilibrium transient situation, and hence our generalization of the definition of the "entropy production" is almost always legitimate. Therefore, our generalization of the fluctuation theorem seems meaningful in wide regions.

Heat-exchange statistics in driven open quantum systems

Simone Gasparinetti, Paolo Solinas, Alessandro Braggio +1 more

As the dimensions of physical systems approach the nanoscale, the laws of thermodynamics must be reconsidered due to the increased importance of fluctuations and quantum effects. While the statistical mechanics of small classical systems is relatively well understood, the quantum case still poses challenges. Here, we set up a formalism that allows us to calculate the full probability distribution of energy exchanges between a periodically driven quantum system and a thermalized heat reservoir. The formalism combines Floquet theory with a generalized master equation approach. For a driven two-level system and in the long-time limit, we obtain a universal expression for the distribution, providing clear physical insight into the exchanged energy quanta. We illustrate our approach in two analytically solvable cases and discuss the differences in the corresponding distributions. Our predictions could be directly tested in a variety of systems, including optical cavities and solid-state devices.

Large deviations and fluctuation theorem for the quantum heat current in the spin-boson model

Erik M. Aurell, Brecht Donvil, Kirone Mallick

We study the heat current flowing between two baths consisting of harmonic oscillators interacting with a qubit through a spin-boson coupling. An explicit expression for the generating function of the total heat flowing between the right and left baths is derived by evaluating the corresponding Feynman-Vernon path integral by performing the noninteracting blip approximation (NIBA). We recover the known expression, obtained by using the polaron transform. This generating function satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem, both before and after performing the NIBA. We also verify that the heat conductance is proportional to the variance of the heat current, retrieving the well-known fluctuation dissipation relation. Finally, we present numerical results for the heat current.
