Abstract

Abstract We study the dynamics of a nonlinear dissipative bosonic Josephson junction with a time-dependent sinusoidal perturbation in the interaction term. We demonstrate parametric resonance, where the system undergoes sustained periodic oscillations even in the presence of dissipation. This happens when the frequency of the perturbation is close to twice the frequency of the unperturbed Josephson oscillations and the strength of perturbation exceeds a critical threshold. We have formulated the threshold conditions for parametric oscillations. To explore the nature of the oscillations, we carry out a multiple time scale analysis of the stability boundaries in terms of the V-shaped Arnold tongue in the parameter space. Full numerical simulations have been performed for the zero-, running-, and π -phase modes of the nonlinear Josephson effect. Our results demonstrate that in the π -phase mode the system is capable of making a transition from regular parametric to chaotic parametric oscillations as one crosses the stability boundary. Also, the phase difference undergoes phase slip before executing sustained parametric oscillations.

Dissipative Bose-Josephson junction coupled to bosonic baths

Sudip Sinha, Subhasis Sinha

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to baths of bosons at its two sites. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within a Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibits vanishing of the energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical point. We study the dynamics of BJJ using a time-dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case we study in detail the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behavior with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the π oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable when their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We study the Josephson dynamics in the presence of an Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate the thermal fluctuations and obtain the Josephson oscillation frequency and damping analytically. We also observe the transition to the symmetry-broken state for strong coupling as well as decay of π oscillation and a self-trapped state to the ground state due to dissipation. Variation of the phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behavior as observed in experiment. Finally we discuss the experimental setup to study the observable effects of dissipation in BJJ.

Generalized Spin-Boson model and its application to dissipative Bose-Josephson Junction

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to bath of bosons at two sites as an application of the generalized spin-boson model. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable in the region where their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We investigate the time evolution of number imbalance and relative phase in presence of Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate thermal fluctuations. Apart from the damping of Josephson oscillations and transition to symmetry broken state for strong coupling, we observe the decay of Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state to the ground state as a result of dissipation. Variation of phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behaviour as observed in the experiments.

Vibrational resonance in a one-dimensional dissipative Bose-Josephson junction

Abhik Kumar Saha

We investigate the linear and nonlinear response of a one-dimensional dissipative Bose-Josephson junction subjected simultaneously to a weak low-frequency probe and a rapidly oscillating high-frequency external drive. Starting from the dissipative two-mode Bose-Josephson equations, we derive an effective higher-order nonlinear equation for the population imbalance by retaining the leading nonlinear correction. Using time-scale separation and perturbative analysis, we obtain analytical expressions for both the linear response at the fundamental frequency and the nonlinear response at the second harmonic. We show that the high-frequency modulation modifies the effective potential landscape and dynamically breaks the symmetry around the stationary state, giving rise to a finite second-harmonic response that is absent without the rapidly oscillating field. Both the linear and nonlinear response amplitudes exhibit resonance-like enhancement for optimal values of the high-frequency driving strength. We further analyze the dependence of the resonance characteristics on interaction strength, dissipation, and driving parameters in both the zero-phase and $π$-phase modes and compare the analytical predictions with direct numerical simulations. Our results demonstrate a controllable mechanism toward realizing linear and nonlinear vibrational resonance in a one-dimensional dissipative Bose-Josephson junction and open new possibilities for controlling collective dynamics in driven ultracold bosonic systems.

Phononic Josephson oscillation and self-trapping with two-phonon exchange interaction

Xun‐Wei Xu, Aixi Chen, Yu-xi Liu

We propose a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) in two nonlinear mechanical resonators coupled through two-phonon exchange interaction induced by quadratic optomechanical couplings. The nonlinear dynamical equations and effective Hamiltonian are derived to describe behaviors of the BJJ. We show that the BJJ can work in two different dynamical regimes: Josephson oscillation and macroscopic self-trapping. The system can transfer from one regime to the other one when the self-interaction and asymmetric parameters exceed their critical values. We show that the transition from Josephson oscillation to macroscopic self-trapping can be induced by the phonon damping of the asymmetric BJJ. Our results open up a way to demonstrate BJJ with two-phonon exchange interaction and might be applied to other systems.

Multi-photon resonances in Josephson junction-cavity circuits

Ben Lang, Andrew D. Armour

Abstract We explore the dissipative dynamics of nonlinearly driven oscillator systems tuned to resonances where multiple excitations are generated. Such systems are readily realised in circuit QED systems combining Josephson junctions with a microwave cavity and a drive achieved either through flux or voltage bias. For resonances involving three or more photons the system undergoes a sequence of two closely spaced dynamical transitions (the first one discontinuous and the second continuous) as the driving is increased leading to steady states that form complex periodic structures in phase space. In the vicinity of the transitions the system displays interesting bistable behaviour: we find that coherent effects can lead to surprising oscillations in the weight of the different dynamical states in the steady state of the system with increasing drive. We show that the dynamics is well-described by a simple effective rate model with transitions between states localised at different points in the phase space crystal. The oscillations in the weights of the dynamical states is reflected in corresponding oscillations in a time-scale that describes transitions between the states.

Phase diffusion and fluctuations in a dissipative Bose-Josephson junction

Abhik Kumar Saha, Deb Shankar Ray, Bimalendu Deb

We analyze the phase diffusion, quantum fluctuations and their spectral features of a one-dimensional Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) nonlinearly coupled to a bosonic heat bath. The phase diffusion is considered by taking into account of random modulations of the BJJ modes causing a phase loss of initial coherence between the ground and excited states, whereby the frequency modulation is incorporated in the system-reservoir Hamiltonian by an interaction term linear in bath operators but nonlinear in system (BJJ) operators. We examine the dependence of the phase diffusion coefficient on the on-site interaction and temperature in the zero- and π-phase modes and demonstrate its phase transition-like behavior between the Josephson oscillation and the macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) regimes in the π-phase mode. Based on the thermal canonical Wigner distribution, which is the equilibrium solution of the associated quantum Langevin equation for phase, coherence factor is calculated to study phase diffusion for the zero- and π-phase modes. We investigate the quantum fluctuations of the relative phase and population imbalance in terms of fluctuation spectra which capture an interesting shift in Josephson frequency induced by frequency fluctuation due to nonlinear system-reservoir coupling, as well as the on-site interaction-induced splitting in the weak dissipative regime.
