Abstract

We propose a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) in two nonlinear mechanical resonators coupled through two-phonon exchange interaction induced by quadratic optomechanical couplings. The nonlinear dynamical equations and effective Hamiltonian are derived to describe behaviors of the BJJ. We show that the BJJ can work in two different dynamical regimes: Josephson oscillation and macroscopic self-trapping. The system can transfer from one regime to the other one when the self-interaction and asymmetric parameters exceed their critical values. We show that the transition from Josephson oscillation to macroscopic self-trapping can be induced by the phonon damping of the asymmetric BJJ. Our results open up a way to demonstrate BJJ with two-phonon exchange interaction and might be applied to other systems.

Dynamical synchronization of two Bosonic Josephson junctions induced by an external driving field in a double-cavity system

Wangjun Lu, Shuai Huang

In this paper, we investigate the dynamical synchronization of atomic populations in two Bosonic Josephson junctions(BJJs). The two BJJs are placed in two optical cavities, respectively. When there is no coupling between the two optical cavities, the dynamical evolution of the two BJJs is independent, and they can be in macroscopic quantum self-trapping regime or Josephson oscillation regime by controlling the strength of the interatomic interactions, respectively. However, when there is a coupling between the two optical cavities, we can adjust an external driving field to a specific value so that the two BJJs are dynamically synchronized even though the parameters of the two subsystems are different. We also found that it is possible to control the transition of the BJJ from the Josephson oscillation regime to the macroscopic quantum self-trapping regime by controlling the strength of the external driving field.

Coherent oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates: Josephson effects, π oscillations, and macroscopic quantum self-trapping

S. Raghavan, Augusto Smerzi, Stefano Fantoni +1 more

We discuss the coherent atomic oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The weak link is provided by a laser barrier in a (possibly asymmetric) double-well trap or by Raman coupling between two condensates in different hyperfine levels. The boson Josephson junction (BJJ) dynamics is described by the two-mode nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation that is solved analytically in terms of elliptic functions. The BJJ, being a neutral, isolated system, allows the investigations of dynamical regimes for the phase difference across the junction and for the population imbalance that are not accessible with superconductor Josephson junctions (SJJ's). These include oscillations with either or both of the following properties: (i) the time-averaged value of the phase is equal to $\ensuremath{\pi} (\ensuremath{\pi}$-phase oscillations); (ii) the average population imbalance is nonzero, in states with macroscopic quantum self-trapping. The (nonsinusoidal) generalization of the SJJ ac and plasma oscillations and the Shapiro resonance can also be observed. We predict the collapse of experimental data (corresponding to different trap geometries and the total number of condensate atoms) onto a single universal curve for the inverse period of oscillations. Analogies with Josephson oscillations between two weakly coupled reservoirs of ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{-}B$ and the internal Josephson effect in ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{-}A$ are also discussed.

Coherent oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates: Josephson effects, $π$-oscillations, and macroscopic quantum self trapping

The weak link is provided by a laser barrier in a (possibly asymmetric) double-well trap or by Raman coupling between two condensates in different hyperfine levels. The Boson Josephson Junction (BJJ) dynamics is described by the two-mode non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation, that is solved analytically in terms of elliptic functions. The BJJ, being a $neutral$, isolated system, allows the investigations of new dynamical regimes for the phase difference across the junction and for the population imbalance, that are not accessible with Superconductor Josephson Junctions (SJJ). These include oscillations with either, or both of the following properties: 1) the time-averaged value of the phase is equal to $π$ ($π-phase$ oscillations); 2) the average population imbalance is nonzero, in states with ``macroscopic quantum self-trapping'' (MQST). The (non-sinusoidal) generalization of the SJJ `ac' and `plasma' oscillations and the Shapiro resonance can also be observed. We predict the collapse of experimental data (corresponding to different trap geometries and total number of condensate atoms) onto a single universal curve, for the inverse period of oscillations. Analogies with Josephson oscillations between two weakly coupled reservoirs of $^3$He-B and the internal Josephson effect in $^3$He-A are also discussed.

Dynamical phase transitions in a two-species bosonic Josephson junction

Jing Tian, Jun Liu, Haibo Qiu +1 more

We investigate dynamical phase transitions that are induced by interspecies interaction in a two-species bosonic Josephson junctions (BJJ), based on semi-classical theory. In zero-phase mode, similar to the case of a single-species BJJ, we observe the well-known dynamical phase transition from Josephson oscillation to self-trapping, which can be induced by both enhanced repulsive and attractive interspecies interactions. In π phase mode, dynamical phase transitions are even more interesting and counter-intuitive. We characterize a dynamical phase transition with the merging of two separate phase space domains into one, which is induced by increasing repulsive interspecies interaction. On the other hand, we find that by increasing attractive interspecies interaction, a phase separation of two formally overlapped phase space domains will occur. At last, we reveal that these intriguing dynamical phase transitions are caused by different kinds of bifurcations.

Modified dynamics of weakly coupled BEC's Josephson Junction (BJJ)

Yuping Huang, Zhen-Sheng Yuan, Lin‐Fan Zhu +3 more

The tunnelling quantum dynamics of bimodal BJJ system is modified through introducing an equilibrium condition, which is based on the assumption that the BJJ is tend to keep on its ground state (with a lowest energy) during the oscillation. The tunnelling dynamics of BJJ with symmetric and asymmetric traps is discussed through numerically solving the modified equations. Stationary states are found to exist in the both BJJs. Compared to previous works, the macroscopic quantum self trapping (MQST) is auto-avoided. Meanwhile, it is revealed that the BJJ oscillates with its inherent frequency which is only related to the Josephson energy, which has been testified experimentally in other contexts.

Dissipative Bose-Josephson junction coupled to bosonic baths

Sudip Sinha, Subhasis Sinha

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to baths of bosons at its two sites. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within a Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibits vanishing of the energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical point. We study the dynamics of BJJ using a time-dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case we study in detail the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behavior with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the π oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable when their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We study the Josephson dynamics in the presence of an Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate the thermal fluctuations and obtain the Josephson oscillation frequency and damping analytically. We also observe the transition to the symmetry-broken state for strong coupling as well as decay of π oscillation and a self-trapped state to the ground state due to dissipation. Variation of the phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behavior as observed in experiment. Finally we discuss the experimental setup to study the observable effects of dissipation in BJJ.
