Abstract We initiate a systematic study of high energy matrix elements of local operators in 2D CFT. Knowledge of these is required in order to determine whether the generalized eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) can hold in such theories. Most high energy states are high level Virasoro descendants, and by employing an oscillator representation of the Virasoro algebra we develop an efficient method for computing matrix elements of primary operators in such states. In parameter regimes where we expect (e.g. from AdS/CFT intuition) thermalization to occur, we observe striking patterns in the matrix elements: diagonal matrix elements are smoothly varying and off-diagonal elements, while nonzero, are power-law suppressed compared to the diagonal elements. We discuss the implications of these universal properties of 2D CFTs in regard to their compatibility with generalized ETH.
Abstract We investigate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) of highly excited descendant states in two-dimensional large central charge c conformal field theory. We use operator product expansion of twist operators to calculate the short interval expansions of entanglement entropy and relative entropy for an interval of length ℓ up to order ℓ 12. Using these results to ensure ETH of a heavy state when compared with the canonical ensemble state up to various orders of c, we get the constraints on the expectation values of the first few quasiprimary operators in the vacuum conformal family at the corresponding order of c. Similarly, we also obtain the constraints from the expectation values of the first few Korteweg-de Vries charges. We check these constraints for some types of special descendant excited states. Among the descendant states we consider, we find that at most only the leading order ones of the ETH constraints can be satisfied for the descendant states that are slightly excited on top of a heavy primary state. Otherwise, the ETH constraints are violated for the descendant states that are heavily excited on top of a primary state.
Abstract We study probe corrections to the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in the context of 2D CFTs with large central charge and a sparse spectrum of low dimension operators. In particular, we focus on observables in the form of non-local composite operators
Oobs(x)=OL(x)OL(0) O o b s x = O L x O L 0 with h L ≪ c. As a light probe,
Oobs(x) O o b s x is constrained by ETH and satisfies
⟨Oobs(x)⟩hH≈⟨Oobs(x)⟩micro O o b s x h H ≈ O o b s x micro for a high energy energy eigenstate |h H 〉. In the CFTs of interests,
⟨Oobs(x)⟩hH O o b s x h H is related to a Heavy-Heavy-Light-Light (HL) correlator, and can be approximated by the vacuum Virasoro block, which we focus on computing. A sharp consequence of ETH for
Oobs(x) O o b s x is the so called “forbidden singularities”, arising from the emergent thermal periodicity in imaginary time. Using the monodromy method, we show that finite probe corrections of the form
O(hL/c) O h L / c drastically alter both sides of the ETH equality, replacing each thermal singularity with a pair of branch-cuts. Via the branch-cuts, the vacuum blocks are connected to infinitely many additional “saddles”. We discuss and verify how such violent modification in analytic structure leads to a natural guess for the blocks at finite c: a series of zeros that condense into branch cuts as c → ∞. We also discuss some interesting evidences connecting these to the Stoke’s phenomena, which are non-perturbative e −c effects. As a related aspect of these probe modifications, we also compute the Renyi-entropy S n in high energy eigenstates on a circle. For subsystems much larger than the thermal length, we obtain a WKB solution to the monodromy problem, and deduce from this the entanglement spectrum.
We develop a Fock-space formulation that reduces expectation values of vacuum-family quasi-primaries in qKdV eigenstates of arbitrary highest-weight conformal families to a free-bosonic problem, and employ it to test the generalized eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (GETH), in 2D conformal field theories with large central charge
c. We demonstrate that the first two quantum Korteweg--de Vries (qKdV) charges
Q1 and
Q3 lift all degeneracies except along at most countably many curves in the
(c,Δ) plane, where
Δ is the highest weight of the conformal family, so that the full-qKdV simultaneous eigenstates are unambiguously determined by
Q1 and
Q3. Based on this, a near-complete toolkit for testing in the vacuum conformal family or falsifying the general form of GETH, i.e. equating qKdV eigenstates and thermal states of the generalized Gibbs ensemble in the sense of expectations of local observables, is provided in this paper, through the infinite tower of qKdV charges. A stronger form of the GETH, namely that all expectations of local observables of a definite level should be expressible of qKdV charges but not contain microscopic eigenstate information, is directly falsified at subleading order in the large-
c expansion. At levels 6 and 8 in the vacuum family, expectation values of quasi-primaries in simultaneous eigenstates of the qKdV charges are not fixed by first finitely many qKdV charges, and microscopic information of the eigenstate is required.
Abstract We investigate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in d + 1 dimensional conformal field theories by studying the reduced density matrices in energy eigenstates. We show that if the local probes of the finitely excited primary eigenstates satisfy ETH, then any finite energy observable with support on a subsystem of finite size satisfies ETH. In two dimensions, we discover that if ETH holds locally, the finite size reduced density matrix of states created by heavy primary operators is well-approximated by a projection to the Virasoro identity block.
We show that in 2d CFTs at large central charge, the coupling of the stress tensor to heavy operators can be re-absorbed by placing the CFT in a non-trivial background metric. This leads to a more precise computation of the Virasoro conformal blocks between heavy and light operators, which are shown to be equivalent to global conformal blocks evaluated in the new background. We also generalize to the case where the operators carry U(1) charges. The refined Virasoro blocks can be used as the seed for a new Virasoro block recursion relation expanded in the heavy-light limit. We comment on the implications of our results for the universality of black hole thermality in AdS3, or equivalently, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for CFT2 at large central charge.
