Abstract

In this paper, we consider the scattering theory for a one-dimensional quantum walk with impurities which make reflections and transmissions. We focus on an explicit expression of the scattering operator. Our construction of the formula is based on the counting paths of quantum walkers. The Fourier transform of the scattering operator gives an explicit formula of the scattering matrix which is deeply related with the resonant-tunneling for quantum walks.

Generalized eigenfunctions for quantum walks via path counting approach

Takashi Komatsu, Norio Konno, Hisashi Morioka +1 more

We consider the time-independent scattering theory for time evolution operators of one-dimensional two-state quantum walks. The scattering matrix associated with the position-dependent quantum walk naturally appears in the asymptotic behavior at the spatial infinity of generalized eigenfunctions. The asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions is a consequence of an explicit expression of the Green function associated with the free quantum walk. When the position-dependent quantum walk is a finite rank perturbation of the free quantum walk, we derive a kind of combinatorial construction of the scattering matrix by counting paths of quantum walkers. We also mention some remarks on the tunneling effect.

Feynman-type representation of the scattering matrix on the line via a discrete-time quantum walk

Kenta Higuchi

Abstract The aim of this article is to relate the discrete quantum walk on Z with the continuous Schrödinger operator on R in the scattering problem. Each point of Z is associated with a barrier of the potential, and the coin operator of the quantum walk is determined by the transfer matrix between bases of WKB solutions on the classically allowed regions of both sides of the barrier. This correspondence enables us to represent each entry of the scattering matrix of the Schrödinger operator as a countable sum of probability amplitudes associated with the paths of the quantum walker. In particular, the barrier-top scattering corresponds to the Hadamard walk in the semiclassical limit.

Quantum walks on graphs and quantum scattering theory

Edgar Feldman, Mark S. Hillery

We discuss a particular kind of quantum walk on a general graph. We affix two semi-infinite lines to a general finite graph, which we call tails. On the tails, the particle making the walk simply advances one unit at each time step, so that its behavior there is analogous to free propagation We are interested in how many steps it will take the particle, starting on one tail and propagating through the graph (where its propagation is not free), to emerge onto the other tail. The probability to make such a walk in n steps and the hitting time for such a walk can be expressed in terms of the transmission amplitude for the graph, which is one element of its S matrix. Demonstrating this necessitates a study of the analyticity properties of the transmission and reflection amplitudes of a graph. We show that the graph can have bound states that cannot be accessed by a particle entering the graph from one of its tails. Time-reversal invariance of a quantum walk is defined and used to show that the transmission amplitudes for the particle entering the graph from different directions are the same if the walk is time-reversal invariant.

Generalized eigenfunctions and scattering matrices for position-dependent quantum walks

Hisashi Morioka

We study the spectral analysis and the scattering theory for time evolution operators of position-dependent quantum walks. Our main purpose of this paper is the construction of generalized eigenfunctions of the time evolution operator. Roughly speaking, the generalized eigenfunctions are not square summable but belong to [Formula: see text]-space on [Formula: see text]. Moreover, we derive a characterization of the set of generalized eigenfunctions in view of the time-harmonic scattering theory. Thus we show that the S-matrix associated with the quantum walk appears in the singularity expansion of generalized eigenfunctions.

Scattering as a Quantum Metrology Problem: A Quantum Walk Approach

Francesco Zatelli, Claudia Benedetti, Matteo G. A. Paris

We address the scattering of a quantum particle by a one-dimensional barrier potential over a set of discrete positions. We formalize the problem as a continuous-time quantum walk on a lattice with an impurity and use the quantum Fisher information as a means to quantify the maximal possible accuracy in the estimation of the height of the barrier. We introduce suitable initial states of the walker and derive the reflection and transmission probabilities of the scattered state. We show that while the quantum Fisher information is affected by the width and central momentum of the initial wave packet, this dependency is weaker for the quantum signal-to-noise ratio. We also show that a dichotomic position measurement provides a nearly optimal detection scheme.

A Discontinuity of the Energy of Quantum Walk in Impurities

Kenta Higuchi, Takashi Komatsu, Norio Konno +2 more

We consider the discrete-time quantum walk whose local dynamics is denoted by a common unitary matrix C at the perturbed region {0,1,⋯,M−1} and free at the other positions. We obtain the stationary state with a bounded initial state. The initial state is set so that the perturbed region receives the inflow ωn at time n(|ω|=1). From this expression, we compute the scattering on the surface of −1 and M and also compute the quantity how quantum walker accumulates in the perturbed region; namely, the energy of the quantum walk, in the long time limit. The frequency of the initial state of the influence to the energy is symmetric on the unit circle in the complex plain. We find a discontinuity of the energy with respect to the frequency of the inflow.
