Variational Monte Carlo method for electron-phonon coupled systems

Takahiro Ohgoe, Masatoshi Imada

We develop a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method for electron-phonon coupled systems. The VMC method has been extensively used for investigating strongly correlated electrons over the last decades. However, its applications to electron-phonon coupled systems have been severely restricted because of its large Hilbert space. Here, we propose a variational wave function with a large number of variational parameters, which is suitable and tractable for systems with electron-phonon coupling. In the proposed wave function, we implement an unexplored electron-phonon correlation factor, which takes into account the effect of the entanglement between electrons and phonons. The method is applied to systems with diagonal electron-phonon interactions, i.e., interactions between charge densities and lattice displacements (phonons). As benchmarks, we compare VMC results with previous results obtained by the exact diagonalization, the Green function Monte Carlo method and the density matrix renormalization group for the Holstein and Holstein-Hubbard model. From these benchmarks, we show that the present method offers an efficient way to treat strongly coupled electron-phonon systems.

Variational Monte-Carlo Studies of Superconductivity in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

A variational Monte-Carlo method is formulated to study superconductivity in strongly correlated electrons. An application is made to the strongly correlated Hubbard model on two-dimensional square lattice, by employing the simplest mean-field-type trial wave function, i.e. the Gutzwiller-projected BCS wave function. Among the various choices examined, the d-wave-type superconductivity turns out to be the most favorable. The nature of the superconducting order parameter and spin correlations is also examined.

Strongly Correlated Electrons and High Temperature Superconductivity

Takashi Yanagisawa

It is very important to clarify the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems. The mechanism of superconductivity in high temperature cuprate superconductors has been studied extensively since their discovery. We investigate the properties of correlated electron systems and mechanism of superconductivity by using the optimization quantum variational Monte Carlo method. The many-body wave function is constructed by multiplying by correlation operators of exponential type. We show that d-wave superconducting phase exists in the strongly correlated region where the on-site repulsive interaction is as large as the bandwidth or more than the bandwidth. The d-wave pairing correlation function is shown as a function of lattice sites, showing that the long-range order indeed exists.
