Abstract

We investigate the nonequilibrium pair density wave order parameter in a simple microscopic model with the ground state $d-$ wave spatially uniform superconductivity. After pushing the system out of equilibrium by a short-time induced order parameter, the system can exhibit robust free nondecaying oscillations of nonuniform superconducting order. In the weak nonequilibrium regime, the frequency of these oscillations is about $2Δ/\hbar$ and the amplitude can be explained qualitatively by features of equilibrium free energy. In case when the system was taken far from equilibrium, it transits to a non-linear regime where even metastable coexistence of $d-$ wave superconducting and pair density wave gaps are possible.

Spin Density Wave and D-Wave Superconducting Order Parameter "Coexistence"

Zaira Nazario, David Santiago

We study the properties of a spin-density-wave antiferromagnetic mean-field ground state with d-wave superconducting (DSC) correlations. This ground state always gains energy by Cooper pairing. It would fail to superconduct at half-filling due to the antiferromagnetic gap although its particle-like excitations would be Bogolyubov-BCS quasiparticles consisting of coherent mixtures of electrons and holes. More interesting and relevant to the superconducting cuprates is the case when antiferromagnetic order is turned on weakly on top of the superconductivity. This would correspond to the onset of antiferromagnetism at a critical doping. In such a case a small gap proportional to the weak antiferromagnetic gap opens up for nodal quasiparticles, and the quasiparticle peak would be discernible. We evaluate numerically the absorption by nodal quasiparticles and the local density of states for several ground states with antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting correlations.

Global phase diagram of D-wave superconductivity in the square-lattice t-J model

Feng Chen, F. D. M. Haldane, D. N. Sheng

The Hubbard and closely related t-J models are exciting platforms for unconventional superconductivity (SC). Through state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations using the grand canonical ensemble, we address open issues regarding the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model on a square lattice in the parameter regime relevant to cuprate superconductors. On large 8-leg cylinders, we demonstrate that the pure t-J model with only nearest-neighbor hoppings and superexchange interactions, for a wide range of doping ( δ = 0.1 to 0.2 ), hosts robust d-wave superconductivity possibly coexisting with weak unidirectional pair density wave. Furthermore, a small next nearest neighbor hopping t 2 suppresses pair and charge density waves, resulting in a uniform d-wave SC phase in both electron- and hole-doped cuprate model systems. Our work validates the t-J model as a proper minimum model for the emergence of superconductivity in cuprate superconductors.

Superconductivity, Pair Density Wave, and Néel Order in Cuprates*

Li-Han Chen, Da Wang, Yi Zhou +1 more

We investigate in underdoped cuprates possible coexistence of the superconducting order at zero momentum and pair density wave (PDW) at momentum Q = (π, π) in the presence of a Néel order. By symmetry, the d-wave uniform singlet pairing dS 0 can coexist with the d-wave triplet PDW dT Q , and the p-wave singlet PDW p Q can coexist with the p-wave uniform triplet pT 0. At half filling, we find that the novel pS Q + pT 0 state is energetically more favorable than the dS 0 + dT Q state. At finite doping, however, the dS 0 + dT Q state is more favorable. In both types of states, the variational triplet parameters dT Q and pT 0 are of secondary significance. Our results point to a fully symmetric Z2 quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface in proximity to the Néel order at zero doping, which may not be adiabatically connected to the d-wave singlet superconductivity at finite doping with intertwining d-wave triplet PDW fluctuations and spin moment fluctuations. The results are obtained by variational quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Theory of Laser-Controlled Competing Superconducting and Charge Orders

Michael A. Sentef, Akiyuki Tokuno, Antoine Georges +1 more

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of competing coexisting superconducting (SC) and charge-density wave (CDW) orders in an attractive Hubbard model. A time-periodic laser field A[over →](t) lifts the SC-CDW degeneracy, since the CDW couples linearly to the field (A[over →]), whereas SC couples in second order (A[over →]^{2}) due to gauge invariance. This leads to a striking resonance: When the photon energy is red detuned compared to the equilibrium single-particle energy gap, CDW is enhanced and SC is suppressed, while this behavior is reversed for blue detuning. Both orders oscillate with an emergent slow frequency, which is controlled by the small amplitude of a third induced order, namely η pairing, given by the commutator of the two primary orders. The induced η pairing is shown to control the enhancement and suppression of the dominant orders. Finally, we demonstrate that light-induced superconductivity is possible starting from a predominantly CDW initial state.

Mechanism for fluctuating pair density wave

Chandan Setty, Laura Fanfarillo, P. J. Hirschfeld

Abstract In weakly coupled BCS superconductors, only electrons within a tiny energy window around the Fermi energy, EF, form Cooper pairs. This may not be the case in strong coupling superconductors such as cuprates, FeSe, SrTiO3 or cold atom condensates where the pairing scale, EB, becomes comparable or even larger than EF. In cuprates, for example, a plausible candidate for the pseudogap state at low doping is a fluctuating pair density wave, but no microscopic model has yet been found which supports such a state. In this work, we write an analytically solvable model to examine pairing phases in the strongly coupled regime and in the presence of anisotropic interactions. Already for moderate coupling we find an unusual finite temperature phase, below an instability temperature Ti, where local pair correlations have non-zero center-of-mass momentum but lack long-range order. At low temperature, this fluctuating pair density wave can condense either to a uniform d-wave super- conductor or the widely postulated pair-density wave phase depending on the interaction strength. Our minimal model offers a unified microscopic framework to understand the emergence of both fluctuating and long range pair density waves in realistic systems.
