Coexistence of spin-density wave and d-wave superconducting order parameter

Abstract

We study the properties of a spin-density-wave antiferromagnetic mean-field ground state with d-wave superconducting correlations. This ground state always gains energy by Cooper pairing. It would fail to superconduct at half-filling due to the antiferromagnetic gap although its particle-like excitations would be Bogolyubov-BCS quasiparticles consisting of coherent mixtures of electrons and holes. More interesting and relevant to the superconducting cuprates is the case when antiferromagnetic order is turned on weakly on top of the superconductivity. This would correspond to the onset of antiferromagnetism at a critical doping. In such a case a small gap proportional to the weak antiferromagnetic gap opens up for nodal quasiparticles, and the quasiparticle peak would be discernible. We evaluate numerically the absorption by nodal quasiparticles and the local density of states for several ground states with antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting correlations.

Spin Density Wave and D-Wave Superconducting Order Parameter "Coexistence"

Quasi-one-dimensional pair density wave superconducting state

Rodrigo Soto-Garrido, Gil Young Cho, Eduardo Fradkin

We provide a quasi-one-dimensional model which can support a pair-density-wave (PDW) state, in which the superconducting (SC) order parameter modulates periodically in space, with gapless Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations. The model consists of an array of strongly interacting one-dimensional systems, where the one-dimensional systems are coupled to each other by local interactions and tunneling of the electrons and Cooper pairs between them. Within the interchain mean-field theory, we find several SC states from the model, including a conventional uniform SC state, PDW SC state, and a coexisting phase of the uniform SC and PDW states. In this quasi-1D regime we can treat the strong correlation physics essentially exactly using bosonization methods and the crossover to the 2D system by means of interchain mean-field theory. The resulting critical temperatures of the SC phases generically exhibit a power-law scaling with the coupling constants of the array, instead of the essential singularity found in weak-coupling BCS-type theories. Electronic excitations with an open Fermi surface, which emerge from the electronic Luttinger liquid systems below their crossover temperature to the Fermi liquid, are then coupled to the SC order parameters via the proximity effect. From the Fermi surface thus coupled to the SC order parameters, we calculate the quasiparticle spectrum in detail. We show that the quasiparticle spectrum can be fully gapped or nodal in the uniform SC phase and also in the coexisting phase of the uniform SC and PDW parameters. In the pure PDW state, the excitation spectrum has a reconstructed Fermi surface in the form of Fermi pockets of Bogoliubov quasiparticles.

Configuration-interaction approach to the two-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling

Barry Friedman, Gregory Levine

The two-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling is studied using a configuration-interaction method. Superconducting order-parameter and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated as functions of distance to probe for superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. Consistent with our previous results, these more extensive calculations point toward d-wave superconductivity in the ground state of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. The d-wave correlations tend to increase with interaction strength, size of the state space used in the calculation, and doping away from half-filling. The superconducting correlations on the Fermi surface are interpreted as d-wave pairing between spin density-wave quasiparticles.

Modeling a striped pseudogap state

Mats Granath, Brian M. Andersen

We study the electronic structure within a system of phase-decoupled one-dimensional superconductors coexisting with stripe spin and charge-density-wave order. This system has a nodal Fermi surface (Fermi arc) in the form of a hole pocket and an antinodal pseudogap. The spectral function in the antinodes is approximately particle-hole symmetric contrary to the gapped regions just outside the pocket. We find that states at the Fermi energy are extended whereas states near the pseudogap energy have localization lengths as short as the interstripe spacing. We consider pairing which has either local $d$-wave or $s$-wave symmetry and find similar results in both cases, consistent with the pseudogap being an effect of local pair correlations. We suggest that this state is a stripe-ordered caricature of the pseudogap phase in underdoped cuprates with coexisting spin-, charge-, and pair-density-wave correlations. Lastly, we also model a superconducting state which (1) evolves smoothly from the pseudogap state, (2) has a signature subgap peak in the density of states, and (3) has the coherent pair density concentrated to the nodal region.

Superfluidity in Strongly Correlated Systems

Eun Gook Moon

We study superfluidity in strongly correlated systems by focusing three features as follows. First, interplay between superfluidity and other order parameters near quantum critical points is studied. The onset positions of the order parameters with or without superconductivity determines how they interact with each other. For the spin density wave (SDW) transition, we find that the quantum critical point shifts by order |∆|, where ∆ is pairing amplitude, so that the region of SDW order is smaller in the superconductor than in the metal. This shift is larger than the |∆|2 shift predicted by theories of competing orders which ignore Fermi surface effects. Second, we study a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator motivated by copper based high temperature superconductors. Based on spin and charge fractionalization, the algebraic charge liquid phase whose bosonic spinons have energy gap but fermionic holons form Fermi surfaces and its superconductivity are studied. We show fluctuations of local SDW order orientation lead to d-wave superconductivity, and its quantum critical pairing mechanisms are investigated. Also, a theory of bound states between spinons and holons is studied. We show that the fractionalization induces a doubling electron-like quasiparticles, which naturally induces the fractionalized Fermi liquid. The bound state theory describes exotic properties of the underdoped Cuprates such as “nodal-antinodal dichotomy” at a mean field level description. At last, we study superfluidity of fermions in optical lattices near the Feshbach resonance. Due to divergence of scattering length at the resonance, universality is observed and characteristics of superfluidity has been studied. We extend such universal properties by considering superfluid-insulator transition with an even integer number of fermions per unit cell. The resulting insulator interpolates between a band insulator of fermions and a Mott insulator of fermion pairs.

Emergent Pair Density Wave and Incoherent Metallic State in a Strongly Correlated Doped System

Soham Maiti, Nandan Pakhira, A. Taraphder

We investigate the dynamical emergence of a state driven by the interplay between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and singlet $d$-wave superconductivity (SC) within a slave-rotor mean-field framework. By decomposing the electron into charge and spin degrees of freedom, the formalism captures strong-correlation effects beyond conventional mean-field approaches. A PDW order is found to emerge dynamically in the coexistence region of AFM and SC. The AFM-SC coexistence region is significantly modified with correlation, leading to a systematic shift of the tetra-critical point. The doping and temperature evolution of the AFM, SC, and PDW order parameters, together with the rotor condensate amplitude $ϕ$, which characterizes charge coherence, shows a crossover from a coherent to an incoherent metal with the suppression of coherent quasi-particle spectral weight. Moreover, in the AFM + $(ϕ\neq 0)$ region, coherent quasi-particle bands coexist with incoherent Hubbard-like excitations, whereas only incoherent spectral features survive in the AFM + $(ϕ= 0)$ regime. The SC phase exhibits nodal quasi-particles consistent with $d$-wave pairing.
