Bouncing and cyclic quantum primordial universes and the ordering problem

Abstract

Abstract In a Bohmian quantum cosmology scenario, we investigate some quantum effects on the evolution of the primordial universe arising from the adoption of an alternative non-trivial ordering to the quantization of the constrained Hamiltonian of a minimally coupled scalar field. The Wheeler–DeWitt equation has a contribution from the change in factor ordering, hence there are new quantum effects. We compare the results between the non-trivial and the trivial ordering cases, showing that the classical limit is valid for both orderings, but new bouncing and cyclic solutions are present in the non-trivial case. Additionally, we show that the non-singular solutions already present in the trivial ordering formalism keep valid.

Cosmological models with asymmetric quantum bounces

P C M Delgado, Nelson Pinto-Neto

Abstract In quantum cosmology, one has to select a specific wave function solution of the quantum state equations under consideration in order to obtain concrete results. The simplest choices have been already explored, in different frameworks, yielding, in many cases, quantum bounces. As there is no consensually established boundary condition proposal in quantum cosmology, we investigate the consequences of enlarging known sets of initial wave functions of the Universe, in the specific framework of the Wheeler–DeWitt equation interpreted along the lines of the de Broglie–Bohm quantum theory, on the possible quantum bounce solutions which emerge from them. In particular, we show that many asymmetric quantum bounces are obtained, which may incorporate non-trivial back-reaction mechanisms, as quantum particle production around the bounce, in the quantum background itself. In particular, the old hypothesis that our expanding Universe might have arisen from quantum fluctuations of a fundamental quantum flat space-time is recovered, within a different and yet unexplored perspective.

Quantum Cosmology in Scalar-Tensorial Theories with Bohm-de Broglie Interpretation

Isaac Torres Sales

In this work, we both review and apply the formalism of Bohm-de Broglie interpretation of quantum mechanics to study two cosmological theories which modify Einstein’s general relativity through the introduction of a scalar field: the minimal and the non-minimal derivative couplings. We address some issues related to the quantization process in those theories, namely the ordering ambiguity and the problem of the quantization of Hamiltonians with non-integer powers in the momenta, in which case we apply a fractional derivative technique. We discuss how the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation provides us physical criteria to analyse the obtained results, specially with respect to the search for nonsingular solutions. With the help of those criteria, we discuss how the applied techniques are able to provide answers to the singularity problem, through bounces and cyclic universes.

QUANTUM COSMOLOGY AND THE ACCELERATED UNIVERSE

Eduardo Sergio Santini

The quantized Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field is studied and interpreted in the Bohm-de Broglie framework. We analyze the quantum bohmian trajectories corresponding to a certain class of gaussian packets, solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We show that these bohmian trajectories undergo an accelerated expansion in the middle of its evolution due to the presence of quantum cosmological effects in this period. It is shown that the luminosity-redshift relation in the quantum cosmological model can be made close to the corresponding relation coming from the classical model suplemented by a cosmological constant, for $z<1$. In this way we have the posibility of interpreting the present observations of high redshift supernovae as the consequence of a quantum cosmological effect.

Quantum cosmology: how to interpret and obtain results

Nelson Pinto-Neto

We argue that the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics cannot be applied to quantum cosmology. Among the alternative interpretations, we choose to apply the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation of quantum mechanics to canonical quantum cosmology. For minisuperspace models, we show that there is no problem of time in this interpretation, and that quantum effects can avoid the initial singularity, create inflation and isotropize the Universe. For the general case, it is shown that, irrespective of any regularization or choice of factor ordering of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, the unique relevant quantum effect which does not break spacetime is the change of its signature from lorentzian to euclidean. The other quantum effects are either trivial or break the four-geometry of spacetime. A Bohm-de Broglie picture of a quantum geometrodynamics is constructed, which allows the investigation of these latter structures.

Quantum Bohmian description of a primordial universe with Fermionic and Bosonic sources

Marlos O. Ribas, F. P. Devecchi, Gilberto Medeiros Kremer

We present a model of an early universe where the sources of gravitational effects are a scalar field, a relativistic fluid based on Schutz’s model and a self-interacting fermionic field. From the classical analysis based on the Hamiltonian formalism we show that the scale factor of the universe can be expressed in terms of a conformal time that emerges from the fluid’s degrees of freedom. From the Wheeler–DeWitt equation, a wave packet solution as function of the conformal time is determined. It is shown that the combination of the scalar and the fermionic field furnishes a consistent quantum regime and a smooth transition to the classical description, working with the aid of the Bohmian mechanics and in particular with the concept of quantum potential. The influence of the presence of the scalar field is also discussed.

Bohmian quantum cosmology from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

Spyros Basilakos, Gerasimos Kouniatalis, Emmanuel N. Saridakis +1 more

We construct a Bohmian quantum cosmological model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with a single scalar field whose potential provides a unified description of cold dark matter and dark energy at the background level. Starting from the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a scalar field, we derive the minisuperspace Lagrangian and the associated canonical Hamiltonian formulation. By means of a nontrivial canonical transformation, the minisuperspace dynamics is mapped into that of a two-dimensional hyperbolic oscillator with a fixed frequency ratio, rendering the Wheeler-DeWitt equation exactly solvable by separation of variables. The resulting Wheeler-DeWitt solutions are expressed in terms of parabolic cylinder functions and are parametrised by a continuous separation constant, reflecting the constrained nature of the theory and the absence of a standard Schrödinger time parameter. Adopting the de Broglie-Bohm formulation, we derive deterministic guidance equations in minisuperspace and construct a well-defined Bohmian Hubble parameter directly in terms of the pilot-wave phase. Finally, we present a Wheeler-DeWitt-derived toy wave function for which the Bohmian trajectories and the associated cosmological expansion history can be obtained analytically, reproducing the late-time ΛCDM behaviour while exhibiting quantum modifications at earlier epochs.
