Abstract

We investigate by statistical means a Bose-Einstein condensate held in a one-dimensional optical lattice whose phase undergoes a fast oscillation. The averaged potential experienced by the atoms yields a periodic potential having the same spatial period but with a renormalized depth. However, the atomic dynamics also contains a micromotion whose main features are revealed by a Kolmorogov-Smirnov analysis of the experimental momentum distributions. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of the micromotion on a quench process corresponding to a proper sudden change of the driving amplitude which reverses the curvature of the averaged potential.

Experimental properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices: Bloch oscillations, Landau-Zener tunneling, and mean-field effects

Matteo Cristiani, O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller +2 more

We report experimental results on the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices. By accelerating the lattice, we observed Bloch oscillations of the condensate in the lowest band, as well as Landau-Zener (LZ) tunneling into higher bands when the lattice depth was reduced and/or the acceleration of the lattice was increased. The dependence of the LZ tunneling rate on the condensate density was then related to mean-field effects modifying the effective potential acting on the condensate, yielding good agreement with recent theoretical work. We also present several methods for measuring the lattice depth and discuss the effects of the micromotion in the time-orbiting-potential trap on our experimental results.

Instability and control of a periodically driven Bose-Einstein condensate

C. E. Creffield

We investigate the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate held in an optical lattice under the influence of a strong periodic driving potential. Studying the mean-field version of the Bose-Hubbard model reveals that the condensate becomes dynamically unstable when the effective intersite tunneling becomes negative. We further show how controlling the sign of the tunneling can be used to manage the dispersion of an atomic wave packet.

Coherent acceleration and Landau-Zener tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in 1-D optical lattices

O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller, Matteo Cristiani +1 more

We have loaded Bose-Einstein condensates into one-dimensional, off-resonant optical lattices and accelerated them by chirping the frequency difference between the two lattice beams. For small values of the lattice well-depth, Bloch oscillations were observed. Landau-Zener tunneling out of the lowest lattice band, leading to a breakdown of the oscillations, was also studied. In order to allow in-trap measurements of these phenomena, we dynamically compensated for the intrinsic micromotion of the atoms in our time-orbiting potential trap.

Floquet solitons and dynamics of periodically driven matter waves with negative effective mass

Mitchell, Matthew, Carli, Andrea Di, Leon, German Sinuco +3 more

We experimentally study the dynamics of weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates of cesium atoms in a 1D optical lattice with a periodic driving force. After a sudden start of the driving we observe the formation of stable wave packets at the center of the first Brillouin zone (BZ) in momentum space, and we interpret these as Floquet solitons in periodically driven systems. The wave packets become unstable when we add a trapping potential along the lattice direction leading to a redistribution of atoms within the BZ. The concept of a negative effective mass and the resulting changes to the interaction strength and effective trapping potential are used to explain the stability and the time evolution of the wave packets. We expect that similar states of matter waves exist for discrete breathers and other types of lattice solitons in periodically driven systems.

Phase transition kinetics for a Bose Einstein condensate in a periodically driven band system

Eric Michon, Citlali Cabrera-Gutiérrez, A. Fortun +7 more

The dynamical transition of an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate from a spatially periodic state to a staggered state with alternating sign in its wavefunction is experimentally studied using a one-dimensional phase modulated optical lattice. We observe the crossover from quantum to thermal fluctuations as the triggering mechanism for the nucleation of staggered states. In good quantitative agreement with numerical simulations based on the truncated Wigner method, we experimentally investigate how the nucleation time varies with the renormalized tunneling rate, the atomic density, and the driving frequency. The effective inverted energy band in the driven lattice is identified as the key ingredient which explains the emergence of gap solitons as observed in numerics and the possibility to nucleate staggered states from interband excitations as reported experimentally.
